Tranquility | A Sequential Prophet VS ambient soundscape

video upload by MIDERA

"Another year is gone. 2024 was a pretty good year. I had probably the best birthday with my family I could've asked for. Some of my health concerns have resolved. We adopted two new cats (they're terrors and nothing like the ones I lost in 2023).

I feel there's a lot of uncertainty in my life that was troublesome for 2024 and will go on into 2025 (isn't that true of everyone though?). Things were not perfect, and are not perfect - but I don't think they ever could be. And even if they were - like on my birthday - it doesn't last.

Anyway - here's to a good year. And hopefully to a better year for everyone.

And yes... you can see in the video that I close my eyes. I am tired. I think I fell asleep a few times while playing. Hopefully the music turned out alright.

Novation K-Station - Who still cares about this old VA synthesizer

video upload by Jake

Custom Novation K-Station.

"The K-station is a 2002 entry level virtual analog synth from Novation.
It is derived from the A-station which is a 1 unit rack version with the same synthesis engine.
They both derive from the previous Nova and Supernova, higher-end synthesizers from 1999. The sound engine is simplified, but similar on many points
8 voices of polyphony, 400 memories, 3 oscillators per voice, 1 lowpass filter, 2 envelopes, 2 lfos and 5 cumulative effects, this is in summary the architecture of the machine.

Today totally forgotten, the K-station is nonetheless worth looking into because it is worth it.

Mine had a broken keyboard, so I transformed it into a module, which is not so bad since this 2 octave keyboard was only taking up space.

Here is a summary demo which consists of running a 2-note arpeggio on an evolving patch and changing a few parameters to bring the sequence to life. Enjoy listening!"

Black Rain (Sequential Take 5 and Soma Cosmos Performance)

video upload by MKustomAudio

"With the ‪@somasynths‬ Cosmos, it makes it easy to create an ambience perfomance using a single sound source. In this video, the various patches from the‪@SequentialLLC‬ Take 5 are routed into the Cosmos with some additional reverb provided by the ‪@1010music‬ Bluebox (also recording the audio). Further processing of the captured audio was then applied in the DAW.

For additional visuals, the ‪@SleepyCircuits‬ Hypno was used with assistance from the ‪@empresseffects‬ Zoia Euroburo. The audio signal from the Take 5 and Cosmos outputs were used for modulating certain parameters while the MIDI note value generated when playing the Take 5 changes the color."

“Resolution” Syntakt mini set w/ The SP404 Techno, Krautrock, Electronica, Madchester, Big Beat, IDM

video upload by goth jocks

"1st time making a live set and recording it all in one go.

Influenced by 90s artist like Underworld, Chemical Brothers, and Drexciya. As well as rock/electronic adjacent artists like Primal Scream. Also, tried to incorporate some krautrock elements from bands like Neu! And Can. You will also probably hear some Boards of Canada influence, but that’s pretty much a given

Most sounds are from the Elektron Syntakt which is running through the Roland SP-404 (OG version). Also used the 404 for some interludes and spoken word elements. The compact flash card was corrupted so I had to get creative with the very limited onboard storage. GFI Systems Skylar pedal was used for reverb."

Jamming the TRS-80 - with a MIDI/80 and Orchestra 90 Sound Card

SundayJelly video upload by Joel Hilliard

This one is in via Michael Wessel [additional posts here] with some notes from him further below, but first the video description:

"Another tune using the TRS-80 Model 4(s) and the Orchestra 90, MIDI80 and classic analog tape!

Using the Technics 616 tape deck to capture audio, part 1 is composed using a TRS-80 Model 4P paired with the MIDI80, using TRACKER playing general midi drums from its onboard S2 module (Lower Computer)

The TRS-80 Model 4 is connected to the Orchestra 90 (reproduction) and George Phillips's newest update of the Orchestra 90 Organ (Available with the MIDI80 software). For the 1st part, the sound was routed through a EH BlackFinger, into a Bass Amp IR Cab.

The 2nd part is routed to a Boutique Amp IR setup, using the Mutron III as an added envelope filter for the 'jelly' sound.

Everything was fed to a digital mixer (Behringer X2222) and recorded directly to the cameras audio via USB. (No multitracking here)

I realize there are errors, clicks, hiss, pops, and all the other things we try to control from an analog perspective, but even with Dolby NR there is still some artifacts that accompany my terrible playing. Technically, you just watched me write this so, ENJOY! Thanks for watching!"

Additional videos:

Additional notes via Michael:

"A while ago, you posted about my MIDI/80 project for the TRS-80 - a MIDI sound card and MIDI interface. [posted here]

https://github.com/lambdamikel/MIDI-80

In the meantime, Joel Hilliard has been making some awesome music with his TRS-80 Model 4 and Model 4p, MIDI/80, and another extension called the "Orchestra" sound card.

He is playing the Model 4 using George Phillips' music synthesizer program for the Orchestra soundcard, "STORCH".

Back in the the day, the TRS-80s didn't really have great sound capabilities, other than their cassette interfaces which could be used for rudimentary sound output. However, this was extremely primitive in comparison to what the competition offered later (e.g., the SID in the C64, POKEY in the Atari 8bits, the AY 3-8910 in various other machines, etc.) Hence, the "Orchestra" sound card quickly became a popular add-on that added more advanced sound capabilities - basically, the Orchestra is a stereo DAC, but all the waveform generation had to be done by the CPU. Back in the day, the Orchestra was used in a "batch programming" mode where a music score was created in a textual special-purpose music programming language, that would then be "compiled" by the TRS-80 to be played back by the Orchestra sound card. Unfortunately, there was never an "interactive" music program that would allow users to use the card in an incremental way, as a musical instrument - until October 2024, when George Phillips released the "STORCH" Orchestra synthesizer program! This is what Joel playing in the video. Given that the Orchestra is a stereo DAC and all the sound generation heavy lifting has to be done by the CPU in realtime, the polyphony is limited to 2, and there are no filters, envelopes, etc. However, STORCH offers basic waveforms such as Saw, Triangle, and Sine. In addition, you can hear MIDI/80 for the the drum track - drums are coming from an S2 Waveblaster plugin, and he is using the TRACKER program on the TRS-80 Model 4p. You can find all the software in the MIDI/80 Github above."

Farfisa Soundmaker Farfisa Soundmaker – strings + piano + saxophone + accordion + piccolo

video uploads by melodikakofoniko

Playlist:

1. Farfisa Soundmaker – strings + piano + saxophone with aftertouch
Just a simple quick sound demo. The Farfisa Soundmaker is an Italian divider-based combo synthesizer released in 1979. It consists of three distinct synths, a monophonic synth, a polyphonic divider synth and a string synth. The monophonic synth is based on an M110 keyboard scanner/oscillator and a ca3080-based lowpass filter. The keyboard has a channel aftertouch that can be routed to LFO (Oscillator), mono brilliance, mono glide and brass brilliance.

Mono sounds are very delicate and expressive. Strings sound glorious.

Elka Twin 61 + Alesis Quadraverb

video upload by melodikakofoniko

"The Elka Twin 61 is a rare Italian string/organ/bass keyboard, built in the early 1980s. Fully polyphonic strings, organ, and other sounds, with monophonic bass section. It has 2 separate sections (A and B) with identical features. The sections can be combined and mixed together to create a huge wall of sound. It sounds super lush and early 80s – unlike typical 70s string machines. It has a great CEM3320 based phaser built in.

In this video both A and B sections are used – Organ for the part A and full strings for part B."

Unleashing the Quanalog Boubou: Heavy Industrial Eurorack Patch Tutorial

video upload by Quanalog Modular

"In this patch, I’m going to show you a totally unexpected way to use the Boubou as part of a synth voice setup to create a heavier industrial vibe. This is perfect for anyone who wants more than just a solid drum sound from the Boubou. Each section, with its ability to process external signals, transforms into a waveform-processing beast like no other.

I recently discovered that if you run a square or saw waveform through the Hi Tom section, then chain it into the Hats (and somehow involve the Snare because of the delightful analog cross-talk magic), you get something truly wild. The result? Cooler (or crazier 😉)—depending on your perspective."

Novation Summit | Moog Sub-37 - "Arpologies"

video upload by eM

"There's just something about these two synths. They truly are a happy marriage. They have their own sounds. I know many who owns synths perhaps have tried to dial in that specific sound against others, and they may come close, but its never to that exact "nichey"/"inkling" of depth that one or the other offers. It makes synths themselves give way to its own special existence for us all to explore. Some just offer longer relationships than others, but we'll never forget them as we move on or say good bye for a while, crossing the times to reminisce on the once was sounds that could potentially be had. Sometimes though having it again may not be the same, it was well for the season which it served in. Where as now there's just no parting with what you have determined to be one to carry you through many seasons."

video upload by Aum Guitars - Journeys into Sound

"Trying out the instrument that we made for the film composer Junkie XL AKA Tom Holkenborg. We're kinda hoping it'll be used in one of his film scores at some point.. Technical note - the instrument is capable of self oscillation due to the active drive circuitry on board. The feedback frequencies are determined by a number of factors determined by the player. I used a Zoom G3 in part of the demo to sequence the feedback. The Matrixbrute wasn't used in this demo btw.. http://aumguitars.co.uk/"

"Up for auction is a very rare, custom-built device from France. This was ordered in 2021, and received in 2022, having taken 10 months to construct. It was used in the studio on a soundtrack recording, and is in excellent 100% operational and cosmetic condition. A detailed Owners Manual is included. Please see below for a video demonstration.

The Chaos Guitar is an 8 string Lap steel with dual piezo elements, (one is magnetic), and an E-bow sensor as well as a standard magnetic humbucking pickup. It features a passive mixer and and active section that allows the user to sustain notes using an inbuilt feedback system, (actually 2 of them). One of these systems is built into a slide, (see Vibraslide page) and plugs physically into the guitar when not being held thereby transferring the vibrations back into the body of the instrument. Furthermore, it is possible to insert an effect into the input of the sustain system to process the feedback signal. This can either be added to the original signal or remain independent of it via a switch. Each of the sound producing elements has a direct output for individual processing if desired."

Fala Versio | Versio Platform | Episode 13

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Noise Engineering has just released three new firmwares for the Versio, Legio and Alia platforms. As always, they're amazing and they're free downloads for any of those platforms. Fala Versio is a formant filter that's super easy to use. It will add a lot of vocal expression to your patch. On mild settings you can create choir-like sounds, on more extreme settings it will talk. In short, it's just amazing.

This is a simple video, which was a warm bath after my last Leibniz video. I'll be using MakeNoise Strega, Bruxa, Serge Medusa and the Broken Loquelic as my sound sources which create an excellent mood for the time between XMAS and the happy new year. I did not make any 'best wishes' or 'best of 2024' video this year because I couldn't finish it in time. I also realized that my 'best of 2024' are never going to be my all time favorites (except the new Serge Medusa and Instruo Dail).

Obviously I wish you all the best and I am hoping you'll have a great time patching the modular during the holiday season - and beyond. I'll probably post something before the end of the year.

Serge has been a personal discovery in 2024, so instead of getting the latest modules, I went back to 70's tech and it's a dream come true. I also love Bruxa a lot. Objectively the Joranalogue x Hainbach Collide 4 is a major achievement in eurorack, and it's impossible to ignore DivKid's colllab-contributions to the eurorack landscape, including the Droid patch.

I still need to figure out my DivSkip. XAOC Berlin is a must-have in the Leibniz niche, but on it's own it's just a very basic VCO. Another favorite is Oneiroi and it's cool to see that Black Maths is on the bestseller list, proving the old stuff doesn't get old. The new Buchla/TTA modules are also dreams that came true and it's great to finally have an orginal 259 . I didn't have time to dive into the new Qu-Bit StarDust looper, but I bet it will be worth checking out if you want to escape monophony."

Mixing House and EDM Together With the Digitakt II and Syntakt

video upload by EZBOT

"I am fascinated by trying new ideas and breaking the rules to suit my musical needs. I used this video/audio for a project with Patreon inc, which is why there is less hands on with modulation. I had to record the video several times, and eventually i just stuck to getting to the end of the song.

This song is called "Shardonay." I wrote it mostly on the Digitakt I and later adapted it to the Digitakt II. It began with a sample from my guitar running through a Gamechanger Audio pedal. The track develops into EDM later on, with the Syntakt showcasing its colors. This was performed using the Performance Mixer 3.0, a template for the Octatrack mk1/mk2 that you can find via the links below.

Additional SYNTH CITY Listings

"A super illusive 6-voice DCO/CEM based analog polysynth from Crumar (Made in Italy). These rarely pop up for sale in the States! This one is fully functional and is in pristine vintage condition, includes a road case and original vinyl bag as pictured.

Please note: this synth is 220VAC only and will require a step down transformer for North American operation.

Service notes:

-Replaced electrolytic and tantalum capacitors in power supply unit
-Removed and cleaned switching PCB and switches
-Cleaned all pots and controls
-Cleaned keys and key contacts
-Checked tuning and calibration

More info:

The Stratus is a somewhat rare, slimmed-down version of the Crumar Trilogy. It is basically two synths in one: a Synthesizer and an Organ synth, which can be played separately or both at the same time. There are independent master volume knobs for the Synthesizer and Organ sections. The Organ section features four horizontal drawbars to adjust the volumes of each of the 4 octaves (2', 4', 8' and 16')."

Aodyo Anyma Phi SN AP00287

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this listing

"Anyma Phi is a desktop physical modeling synthesizer with various algorithms(from Mutable Instrumets Elements, Rings, Braids, Plaits etc.) that simulate resonators, strings, organ pipes and other acoustic sound sources. Thanks to the audio inputs, Anima Phi can also be used as an effects unit to play external sounds through said models. For example, you can play a drum loop through a string model, adding an organic tail to any transient. Other effects such as reverb, delay, ring modulator, etc. are also available. In total, Anima Phi currently offers 69 different modules that can be interconnected via the matrix. Thus, the small device represents a pretty powerful sound shaping tool. Classic MIDI-Din-I/O and USB-MIDI allow the integration of any MIDI controller, sequencer and your DAW."

X1L3- GT 300 - Cybernoid 2 - oscilloscope view

video upload by X1L3

Follow-up to this post.

"Cybernoid 2 theme from the C64 by Jeroen Tel.
Covered with the GT 300 eurorack module.

GT 300 runs into a bank of three low pass filters. One for each channel. It's what the Atari ST or ZX spectrum might have sounded like if they had filters on their sound chips like the SID in the C64.

You can get a basic SID voice by using the modulator, but it lacks the finesse of having the real thing. It's a real shame that these chips were never capable of PWM without hammering the volume registers.

Lots of nice mellow to spicy wave action with plenty of modulator abuse to be seen."

Demo of Wrinkler MK2 analog wavefolder.

video upload by Noise Lab Sweden

"Finally, a bit late, here’s the long-awaited demo of the WRINKLER MK2 analog wavefolder, launched earlier this year. This 12HP Eurorack module is an updated and significantly enhanced version of its predecessor. For details, specification and availability, head over to the homepage at https://www.noiselab.se. Now, lets' wrinkle some waves!"

"Introducing Wrinkler MK2, a fresh take on its predecessor, the Wrinkler. This updated version features a new extended circuit design full of innovative enhancements. At its essence, it's a wavefolder inspired by the pioneering works of Buchla and Serge but with a bunch of tricks added.

Noteworthy improvements include three distinct input options, with two capable of folding square waves. The options add an extra flavor to any waveform, but in particular square and saw waves. Another standout feature is the three folding options, all of them capable of creating an abundance of harmonically rich content using different types of folds.

Moreover, the Wrinkler MK2 features an independent CV input dedicated to gain control. This functionality not only intensifies the folding but also enables amplitude modulation effects (ring modulation), or alternatively, allows it to double as a VCA.

Sculpt your waveform even more by modulating Symmetry and give it some extra weight by adding the dry input signal. To summarize; your waveforms will never be the same after a meeting with Wrinkler MK2. And yes, it’s all analog."

New SetonixSynth SkyWave VCO

Feature Rundown w/ Robots Are Red video upload by SetonixSynth

"In this video, Brian aka Robots Are Red breaks down the unique control scheme of the new SkyWave Segmented VCO with audio examples that demonstrate its raw harmonic power."

via Setonix

SkyWave Segmented VCO

The SkyWave is an all-analog voltage controlled oscillator capable of producing many different timbres and unique harmonic behaviors, thanks to an original step-based control scheme which allows the user to dial in completely different wave-shapes and levels for successive oscillator cycles.

The SkyWave uses an internal feedback loop with the clock output of the oscillator triggering a step sequencer which in turn cycles through settings at the frequency of the core oscillator, thus changing the shape and level of the waveform output on a per-cycle basis while also staying in tune and tracking pitch like a typical VCO.

SkyWave Features:

-Complex analog oscillator in 14hp
-Unique “segmented” behavior
-Variable level and waveshape with full CV control and PWM
-Unique “SkyWave” output with sequential waveform control
-Selectable # of steps, clock input and reset for step sequencer
-Audio or LFO output frequency range
-Additional Sine and Clock waveform outputs
-TZFM/TZPM, 1V/Octave and Hard Sync inputs
-Clock division and per-step CV control via Scaffold expander

Technical Specs:
Width: 14hp
Depth: 30mm
Peak Current Draw:
80mA @ +12V, 60mA @ -12V
Input Impedance (All Inputs): 100kΩ
Output Impedance: 1kΩ

Instruō - Cš-L [Production Behind the Scenes]

video upload by Instruō

"Hello!

I'm uploading this video during that limbo period between Christmas and New Year.
If your seasonal routine is anything like mine then you'll be killing time between larger meals than are necessary!
This was the last test phase of the last production batch of Cš-L of 2024.
It's a sequenced patch routine that tests all the I/O and internal routing configurations.
I have done this many many many times over the past ~7 years...
It's a very familiar pattern of sounds to everyone here in the workshop!

I've thought about setting up a camera and recording processes like this for a while.
I kinda enjoy weird content like this myself... I find it fascinating watching footage of processes.
When something has been done so often it becomes muscle memory. I think there's something quite hypnotic to watching it be done.
There are various stages of the production of modules that are very repetitive. I do quite enjoy having a range of very different tasks that are part of this weird job.
Working through a Cš-L in this stage is very much muscle memory now. And the resulting sounds are so familiar I can QC check them quite efficiently.

Several years ago I had the good fortune to meet and work with the late and great Phill Niblock while I was based in Boston & NYC.
Phill, perhaps being best known for his drone compositions, worked across creative mediums.
During several concerts I was part of as a performer, there were epic projected backdrops of some of his The Movement of People Working film footage.
These films captured people working in rural environments around the world.
The jobs being done are tasks that have clearly been performed many many many times!
So much of it is very necessary work: fishing, farming, weaving, processing of crops, repairing tools.
All very necessary tasks required by small rural communities.
In comparison, I do feel a bit like what I do is quite a silly job!
...I don't really have any point here!
I was just reminded of Phill's video work, and the chances I had to get to know him and work with him a handful of times. And of course how much I've enjoyed his work which was as much about "process" as it is about an end product.

I enjoy behind the scenes content, and Instruō very much began as a behind-the-scenes–documentation of process–focussed creative project.
It's an element I am keen to revisit and explore more.
Where Instruō has grown to over the past 8-9 years is still crazy to me, and I feel extremely fortunate to be able to do this for a living.
And on top of that, being able to work with such a great team that make this company possible.
Thank you all for your continued support.
I'm very excited for 2025!
I hope you have a great new year when it comes.

Cheers!
~Jason"

Leibniz Unleashed | XAOC Leibniz Binary Subsystem | Episode 04

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"It's been six months since episode 03 (The Road to Berlin). This is mainy because I make videos as I go and as I learn. The Leibniz system, by itself is not difficult to use, but in the audio domain it's impossible to bypass the 8-bit sound quality and harsh noise is inevitable. I needed to take many breaks to make this video and I had to get my knowledge from the manuals and the excellent works of Tom Churchil. I never fully realized you need to make loops for best results and I didn't know how important 'reclocking' is. I experimented with external VCO's before I realized Berlin and Poczdam offer their own Leibniz clocks to manipulate and 'reclock' the datastreams.

I had many 'I did not know' moments while making this video, and often I had to reshoot stuff that did not make any sense anymore. I wanted this episode to be a 'Leibniz Unleashed' experience, showing off some amazing patches that have a lot to offer and complement what's already out on YouTube.

I guess a logical followup for Episode 05 is to explore musical applications some more, especially in the audio domain. Leibniz is just great for CV and rhythms, but (at first glance) not so great in the audio domain (unless you fancy glitch, noise and other raw genres, it excels here).

I hope this video will help you get more production value from your Leibniz set, or help you decide if it's something of interest. Modular is too expensive to just do a leap of faith and figure it out later. It can take a year before it starts to make sense. But it's been a great year!
