"This is an Oberheim Two Voice synthesizer in very rare all original condition and style as it a very early model with the serial number of 28. I was going to restore this but it dawned on me it might be worth more to someone in original condition as a collectable. The synths is in great condition for its age and seems to have been kept in a dry storage. The key bushings of course dried up and falling apart which is why the keys are uneven, the actual keys and keybed is in great condition as well as all of the knobs and controls. It powers up and makes sound, the sequencer worked but I did no further testing was done and kept powered off since so not to harm anything without checking inside, cleaning out, rebuilding power, etc. This needs to be serviced/restored if you actually want to use it."

Quiet Saturdays - Episode 25 - live studio
Published on Apr 30, 2016 Alba Ecstasy
"After I spent last night baking cozonac (traditional Romanian cake - similar to sponge cake) and today preparing the Easter dinner, I returned to studio and recorded a longer Episode - almost a double one, maybe also because next week I'll be off studio for a couple of days and there will not be a new recording (25) - probably also not for the Moons of Monday.
So, this Episode, 24, is based on Circuit - sequence, bass and drums - but it's coming into action on min 4:00. Until then, Virus Ti2, Microkorg and Op-1 are creating an introduction, later coming the lead from Promars (System-1) and another two sequences from my Eurorack mix (Braids, Z3000mkII, Doepfer SEM, Ripples, Clouds...).
I hope you'll enjoy this Episode and if you're celebrating this weekend, I wish you Happy Easter! Or Happy Labour Day! Or just have a great weekend, my friends!

Sounds can be triggered either by MIDI or drum pads via trigger inputs. In this video, I'm using a Roland Fantom X6's rhythm programmer to trigger the SC2's sounds via MIDI. Front panel controls allow you to adjust volume, pitch, tuning via dynamics, filter via dynamics and decay."

The TB-303 has remained in a box in the attic until recently, when I took it to Guitar Center to have all functions checked out. "VINTAGE 1980's ANALOGUE POLYPHONIC SYNTH,
WITH 8 VOICES AND 8 OSCILLATORS, WHICH CAN BE PAIRED, SPLIT, OR EVEN UNISON-ED FOR AN 8 VOICE MEGA-BEEFY SOLO SYNTH SOUND, PLUS MIDI AND A NICE CHORUS EFFECT.
A rare beat this, in excellent condition with a copy of the Split 8 manual (which is the same this machine under the hood), but the Pro 8 has the far cooler classic Sequential styling! Manufactured in Japan for SCi maybe as a challenger to the Roland Juno 106, only relatively few of these made it to production before Dave Smith became wary that the wooden end cheeks and unmistakable font styling might be confused with the Pro One and Prophet 5, so it morphed into the Split 8, which shares the styling of the TOM drum machine! Anyway, lots of info available on line about it's controversial genesis story and rarity.
A lovely sounding poly and a nice rare alternative to the more common SCi, Korg and Roland poly's of the era, if you can find one! This was the only one I'd ever seen or sale in the UK when I bought it, but my gear armoury has crept up on me again and needs to be MAJORLY slimmed down, so I've opted to let some of my rarest vintage pieces go (check my other listings too, more to be added!). This is a Japanese 100v voltage unit (as they all are I believe) but has obviously been converted to UK voltage at some point in it's life, as it works great plugged straight in with just a UK adapter. Minor wear and tear but overall in timewarp condition, bright white keys, strong red lights and digital screen, a really beautiful and unusual vintage 1980's proper poly-synth."

These two VCOs are sent through the VCF Gristleizer and into Ableton Live with a little Universal Audio EMT 140 Plate Reverb. The saw wave LFO from the VCF Gristleizer is fed back into the Frequency Mix input of the second VCO Gristleizer."

Published on Apr 29, 2016 S. B. Arweiler
"PATCH NOTES:
The whole patch is controlled by the Monome White Whale with one CV channel controlling the Mutable Instruments Braids in WMAP mode, and the second CV channel controlling the Mutable Instruments Rings. One gate channel of the White Whale triggers the Tip Top BD808 bass drum, the second gate channel triggers an envelope which controls Braids's output through a MakeNoise Optomix. Another gate channel triggers Strum on the Rings. The fourth gate channel triggers the Reset of the MusicThing RadioMusic, which plays a one note guitar chord sample which then again is being sent through the Mutable Instruments Clouds. Intellijel Quadra LFOs do some modulation on Braids and Rings, and the Evaton Technologies RF Nomad through the second OptoMix channel provides some noisy percussion.
Gear used:
- 3U Eurorack modular with
* Evaton Technologies RF Nomad
* Mutable Instruments Clouds

"We took our 20+ years of experience in vacuum-tube electronic music, and used it to make the most exciting instrument in the history of Metasonix. The S-2000 is not merely a new repackaging of old designs. It is a revolution, and a game changer.
The S-2000 was made to be as easy to use as possible. Just plug in power, plug in an amplifier, wait 30 seconds for the real new-old-stock vacuum tubes to warm up, and start playing it. The built-in 400mm ribbon controller is instantly responsive, and needs no special treatment. No trimpots, no fiddling with MIDI interfaces or fighting with fistfuls of cables. The misery has been engineered out.
The simplicity might fool you. The S-2000 has enough controls and enough flexibility to keep the musician busy for years of sonic exploration. It contains:
two all-tube oscillator/filter “operators”, with resonance variable from flat response to deep oscillation. Waveshape is variable from clean sine wave to a distinctive distorted square/pulse wave. Resonate both for FM sound effects.
an all-tube VCA.

Many have become super successful in the synth world. There's some amazing history captured here and this is why I post things like this. You never know...

BSEM - The Boston School of Electronic Music Website
This one in via an anonymous comment:
"Everyone should check out this link for info about Boston School Of Electronic Music, founded by Jim Michmerhuizen, who also wrote the original Manual for the ARP 2600. Somewhere at the site is a pdf with a graet patch for the 2600 by Jim in 1972. A SAMPLE/HOLD PATCH THAT SWINGS.
http://2little2late.org/BSEM/"
via the website:
"The Boston School of Electronic Music was "founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in May of 1972 by Jim Michmerhuizen, BSEM was the first independent school of electronic music in the United States.
Closing in 1978 as the result of a catastrophic fire, BSEM was a focal point for those interested in electronic music synthesis. This site is an attempt to preserve some of the history and culture, and to document that unique moment in the late 20th century..."
An interesting side note according to this post, "a former ARP engineer told me that this was a side project of a ARP/Aries engineer for the Boston School of Electronic Music."
I'm curious if this was Jim Michmerhuizen's or Dennis Colin's, the engineer behind the ARP 2600 and Aries modular. If anyone knows, feel free to leave a comment below. A search for Jim Michmerhuizen on the site brings up a couple of previous posts but no mention of Aries.
Updates via the comments:
Fletcher Ingram:
"The person in question is Ron Rivera. I can't find where I saw that he was evolved in the ARP techy stuff department, but the following link: "http://www.gentleelectric.com/AriesMusic.html" indicates his having done work for Aries Music and that he did fix, clean, restore all things synthesizers. In his dining room was either a Moog 55 or 35 continuously being worked on, or it was the dining room table. You also had to be aware of the rabbit droppings throughout his apartment. He help with the Aries analog Sequencer & Sequential Switch. He offered modified ARP2600 & Minimoogs, adding Sync and other enhancements. I work with him several times doing menial work. I attended & resided at BSEM for several years before it closed as a student, house keeper, office boy, and Lab assistant. I may have embellished a few things here, but I was indeed involved with most things going on at BSEM in the middle to late 1970s. BSEM was a hell of an experience that I will remember till I go to be with Lord. If further info and corrections are needed:

"According to Jim M. this synth predated Aries. Per Jim:
'This is a picture of the big synthesizer BSEM built for Wesleyan University around 1974. This was basically Bob Snowdale's initiative; he came to us from W.U. having studied with Alvin Lucier there. Later, of course, Snowdale went on to found Aries.'
Somewhere there was also a big customized Moog synthesizer that we (BSEM) installed at UMass Boston in the mid 70's. Bob Moog himself came, and after it was set I enjoyed driving him back to the airport and hanging out with him while waiting for his flight.
For Fletcher - Ron Rivera's bunny was named Pummel :)"

Korg 770 Synthesizer Troubleshooting Intermittent Pitch Problems
Published on Apr 28, 2016 gstormelectro
The filter comparison video with the Korg Volca Bass that he refers to is posted here.
"This is a concise, technical, and hopefully well-presented account of how to resolve an intermittent problem on a vintage synthesizer. I learned a lot, and hopefully others could as well. As with all electronics projects take the necessary precautions to prevent electrocution, injury and death.
This old Korg 770 synthesizer was having intermittent pitch problems.
Intermittent problems are the mother-of-all problems to resolve.
Like finding a needle in a haystack...
if your needle is made of glass...
and the haystack takes half a city block.
The keys to the game are four D's:
- Dumping vast amounts of time into the project
- Drawing a map (schematics, diagrams), and marking the places you have already explored.
- Discipline and persistence.
- Deploying the right tools: Voltmeter, Oscilloscope, Iron, and a good rework gun like the Hakko 808.
Other things not covered in this video I dealt with during this restoration were:
- Replaced 3 broken keys
- Re-aligned a bent keybed frame
- Replaced a broken pot and broken switch
- replaced DOZENS tiny pot metal screws that were stripping out.
- Installed a 3-prong AC Power Entry module
- Added an Earth Ground to the chassis
I would like to send special thanks to cykong.com for taking to time to provide graphically enhanced schematics available. Without this I may have not been able to resolve this extremely difficult situation.

New OS Update Coming to the DSI/Roger Linn Design Tempest
Good news for Tempest owners. You might remember the owners petition posted back in March. It looks like there will be an OS update to address some of the requests. The following came in from Roger Linn in response to Sonic State:
"To be honest, a big part of the problem is that I've been so busy with LinnStrument for the past couple of years that I haven't been giving Tempest the attention I should have as designer, and I think that is reflected in problems in the last Tempest update. So I owe Tempest owners an apology. Dave and his guys were already working on a new update, but with the kind assistance of one of the writers of the petition, I've stepped back in to help insure that the next update does what it needs to. I'd love to give you a release date for this update but there are still too many unanswered questions. So the best I can say now is that we're working hard on it and this is very important to me personally.
- Roger"
I confirmed with DSI, and an update will be coming.

Music Theory For Bedroom Producers, Parts I & II - NEW Free Course on Soundfly

This one in via Soundfly, a supporting member of MATRIXSYNTH!:
"We made this course because we think that how theory is currently taught is dry, academic, and difficult to apply to the way producers are making tracks in the year 2016. Yet the same rules apply, and can be used in electronic music to create fantastic new possibilities!"
It's a two part course available online:
Theory For Bedroom Producers I : The Black Keys
Exploring the Pentatonic Scale's impact on electronic music and production.
Theory for Bedroom Producers II : The White Keys
Exploring Mixolydian, Lydian and Major Scale grooves for applications in MIDI and beyond!
Details:
"This course series was developed in partnership with New York University's Music Experience Design Lab (MusEDLab). It incorporates years of user research about what makes learning engaging and effective. One key innovation is a new in-browser tool called the aQWERTYon that turns an ordinary computer keyboard into an intuitive musical instrument, enabling students to play examples for themselves right in the course tab. The course is taught primarily by Ethan Hein, research fellow at the MusEDLab and adjunct professor at New York University, and created in collaboration with online music school Soundfly.
These resources are accessible to anyone curious about how music works, but we've targeted them specifically to producers of electronic music. We present examples in the MIDI piano roll familiar to users of Ableton Live or Logic, so no music reading is required. We also offer downloadable MIDI files that can be used in those programs, or any other digital audio workstation. Users go at their own pace, watching videos, taking on activities, playing with the MusEDLab's online keyboard, and learning whenever they want. Students can also share their work using the hashtag #theoryforproducers."

With a bit of effort you can also take full control over the PLGVL cards in your MOTIF ES, S30--S90, EX5r, MU128, MU1000, MU2000 etc. With a bit of effort you can setup a poly VL configuration or layer multiple VL units resulting in more expression and realism..."

Sound Effect: North Dakota Plains
Published on Apr 28, 2016 SGE
"My attempt at a sound effect scene: The sounds a person might hear while sitting on a porch in North Dakota during wind-swept conditions. The 'wind' is 2 noise voices from the PerFourmer, panned left and right so they sweep around. The 'wind chimes' are a PerFourmer square wave sequenced by the Doepfer MAQ, running through a Modcan Dual Frequency Shifter (which gives it the windchime tube sound) then through a clocked delay from the Disting euro module.
Every now and then there is a 'hawk' screeching in the distance. This 'hawk' is a square wave FM'd by a fast S/H LFO. It also goes through an Echorec pedal delay.
All the sounds go through an Eventide Space for some ambience."

"Here is for sale soviet analog synth Aelita from 80s. Synth was designed and has been made at the Murom military plant (RIP). This is unique sounding synth. It has 3 OSCs (which is very rare for such a vintage synth) and modulation possibilities similar to the Minimoog. Unit is in a good cosmetic condition (has some minor scratches and a bit dusty on photos) and it works perfectly fine which is also rarity these days.
Synth has been fully serviced and modded. (Added modulation speed LED and noise generator)."

Here is the demo of the CGS (Cat Girl Synth) 202 Resonant EQ modelled after the Serge Resonant Equalizer. For detailed infos about this module and its features visit its official website:
http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgs2...
The important info from the link below:
"The RESONANT EQUALIZER (EQ) is a unique ten-band filter designed specifically for electronic sound synthesis and processing. Except for the top and bottom frequency bands, all other bands are spaced at an interval of a major seventh. This non-standard spacing avoids the very common effect of an accentuated resonance in one key, as will be the effect from graphic equalizers with octave or third-octave spacing between bands. Spacing by octaves will reinforce a regular overtone structure for one musical key, thereby producing regularly spaced formants accenting a particular tonality. The Resonant Equalizer's band spacing are much more interesting, producing formant peaks and valleys that are similar to those in acoustic instument sounds.
There are three equalized outputs, two which mix the alternate filter bands, and one which is a mix of all filter bands. The upper (up arrow COMB) lets pass the outputs of frequency bands at 61 Hz, 218 Hz, 777 Hz, 2.8 kHz, and 11 kHz. The lower (down arrow COMB) mixes the other bands (29 Hz, 115 Hz, 411 Hz, 1.5 kHz, 5.2 kHz). This equalizer is different from other equalizers in that the bands can be set to be resonant. When the knobs are in the middle position, the response at the main EQ Output is flat. When the knobs are positioned between the 9 and 3 o'clock position, up to 12 db of boost or cut is set at the band. If the knob is set beyond the 3 o'clock position, the band will become resonant, simulating the natural resonance of acoustic instrument formant structures. Below the 9 o'clock position, increased band rejection is achieved."
