"Vintage early 80's analog synth Rhodes Chroma Model 2103 #0567, the last significant project by ARP synthesizers. 16 channel programmable polyphonic synth with true dynamic keyboard feel (velocity and after-touch sensitive full-size wooden keys). This keyboard is in great physical condition. It has seen no use since it was purchased from the music store 35 yrs ago. The keyboard is close to being physically immaculate, clean in and out, not a nick on it. Original wood looks great and all keys like new and snap right back responsively with no marks on them at all. Keyboard has the original power supply which still works. That being said, electronics like to be on and 35 years of no use results in some necessary internal service. When switched on the fan runs but LED's aren't lighting up. This will need to be checked out by a technician but I've already discussed with and been estimated to completely upgrade to full working condition the following, where necessary, new power supply, new CPU board, any issues with analog voices etc. somewhere in the range of $1000-$2000. Pro re-furbed units have been recently selling by known brokers in the $8000-$9000 range and there is currently one selling on eBay for ($9699)."

Astro Pi / Tim Peake inspired piece created for the Brighton Modular Meet

'We were thrilled to be invited to run a demonstration of the Mad Music Machine at the Brighton Modular Meet.

We thought it would be a good idea to create a patch using waveforms generated from our Astro Pi data with samples we created from the European Space Agency commentary of Tim Peakes flight from Earth to the International Space Station.

We used the Synthesis Technology WaveeEdit programme to create the wavetables which on the E370 are taken from the pattern formed by the humidity data recorded in our experiment. The E352 uses a sample of the engine noise of the Soyuz TMA-19M which on which Tim Peake travelled - this is modulated in cloud mode to give the 'engine' sounds.

As the data was generated on a Raspberry Pi so we thought it would be appropriate to use Sonic Pi for for the sequencing :)

"Get the headphones on and crank the volume up to full :) The original piece is a masterwork. Absolutely stunning. I created a version/arrangement for Matrixbrute. Four-part.

I've grown the texture with each re-entry of the theme, building to an ultimate, wet-your-pants, uber-powered climax.

This arrangement is slightly different from the original i.e. bassline etc, but in this version it works well. I'm happy with how this turned out. I spent a little time on the arrangement last night, and recorded/filmed the work today. All takes are live; no editing.

The arrangement sounds far bigger than only 4 parts. Such is the sheer analog strength of the MB.

I assume there shouldn't even be any need for more discussion RE the Matrixbrute's strengths/weaknesses: the instrument is hands-down one of the best mono synths. Ever.

And I'm a fussy bugger :)

"Playing around with the Peak and the A-49, which is apparently my new hotel room workstation. The line audio is going into a Zoom Q2n's "ext audio" input, which has a mic pre in it. It sounds pretty good considering that and the video isn't bad at all, actually.

This is a neat little patch I just made on the Peak. Animate 1 modulates the amp EG release, and Animate 2 brings in 2 cycles of a positive only LFO on the start of the sound.

Animate 1 and 2 are mapped to S1 and S2 on the Roland A-49. these two pieces go together very well."

"Just messing about with newly added MIDI CC controls on my Pearl Drum-X.
It has Bass, Snare and 3 x Toms (tom 3 is non-functional due to borrowed parts)
Controls for each drum are the same - Pitch, Bend, Osc/Noise balance, Overtone (pitch fm), Attack, Filter, Decay and Level.
But each drum has a different range of sounds.
Chucked in some 909 at one point to see how it fits."

"A melodic semi-self-generating patch using 2 Mother 32s sent through an Eventide Space modechoverb reverb and an Eventide Timefactor on banddelay setting.

This patch came about when I was playing more with delays, using them as an integral part of the patch. The patch itself is not very complex, and I ended up adding another M32 for a cinematic bass line. I got the name from the melodic line - the delays work so that every new sequence step gets added onto the end of the delay 'melody', like taking another step forwards.

PATCH NOTES:
The higher M32 is the main pluck sound, and is running a simple sequence. Its mix between the VCO and white noise is modulated by a slow triangle LFO, and the filter cutoff and resonance are both modulated randomly (using both M32's Assign outputs set to 'random stepped voltage'). The lower M32 (the bass) is constantly on, and its envelope isn't used. It is being clocked randomly, so that the note changes on random steps of the melody. The filter resonance is quite high, and is modulated by a triangle LFO to push it towards self-oscillation; the filter cutoff is tuned so that the note adds some harmony. There is a mono delay from the Timefactor which has a delay time slightly quicker than the tempo - this gives the effect of the 'run up' towards the next melody note, which is the backbone of the whole patch. This delay has some bandpass filtering with the cutoff modulated by a slow internal LFO. The reverb from Space adds stereo width and texture.

Untitled #6 (Ambient Rings Feedback Patch)

"This patch uses Mutable Instruments Rings as the main sound source. Rings output is split to the main mixer (Erica Black Stereo) and into Clouds. Clouds output goes into Mannequins Three Sisters filter. The All output of Three Sisters is patched into Morphagene, and Morphagene's output is then patched into Rings's input.

I recorded some lower register Rings sounds into a Morphagene splice previously which are used as an exciter for Rings with Morphagene's sound-on-sound turned fully clockwise. Turning sound-on-sound counter clockwise mixes the live (Clouds- and Thee-Sisters-processed) Rings sounds with the previously recorded lower register Rings sounds and creates some nice feedback textures.

Additional voices are provided by Mannequins Mangrove and Mutable Instruments Plaits, lots of modulation with Just Friends and Cycles running on Monome Ansible. Disting Mk3 provides the delay for the Mangrove voice.

Everything ist sequenced with Kria running on a second Monome Ansible."

Home-Brew Moog 904-b module - first test

"Just testing the first of my 904-b H.P.F. builds - there was actually a problem with one of them - it wasn't passing audio but 'oscillating' with a low frequency 'thump' on the output. But changing a cap value fixed that. Strangely, the other one I built - exactly the same - didn't have that issue. Now both are working perfectly...! here I am triggering it with my 1125 S&H and also modulating it now and then with the 921's sawtooth from the aux output."

"Roland just released a new upgrade to the System8 synthesizer adding 2 set of oscillator variants. Variation 3 adds six 2 operator choices and Variation 4 add six 5 operator choices.

To demonstrate these new features, I have an arpeggiator running while I select the different FM choices while also adjusting the AMP release time which not only affects the amplitude of the overall sound, but modulates the oscillator’s 'color'.

You are hearing a single oscillator (OSC2 is muted) and a little bit of the Sys8’s built-in reverb. I accidentally hit one of the program buttons and changed the patch just before getting to Var4, FM5 Type F. I didn't feel like re-shooting the video. My oligopolies."

"This is a really cool lot of Roland print items and a flex demo for early synthesizers. Oldest is a SH-3A fold-out flyer with a 1974 date, Beckmen Musical Instruments stamp. It has some tears, wear and discoloration and a three-hole punch. One item is titled "Roland Synthesizer" from 1975 featuring the SH-1000 which folds out and includes a flexible demo record. This has a price written in pen on the front, and has a three hole punch which also went through the record (2 punched holes along one edge) but doesn't look like it entered the grooves. Next is a flyer for the SH-2000 which has the stamp from Beckmen Musical Instruments on one side, also dated 1975, one side is in color. There are three flyers, undated, for the EP-10, EP-30 and SH-1000, all with the Beckmen stamp and three hole punch.."

Here's the very excellent, very underrated, very overlooked LRMSMSLR module from WORNG Electronics ... that's wrong, spelt wrong ...

The LRMSMSLR takes a stereo input (left and right) then sums them together to create a mid input and creates a signal that's a difference of the two to create a side signal. This is a common mastering technique often doing things such as removing low end from the side stereo elements to clean up a mix. The mid signal is a single mono channel and the side input is a single mono channel, it's the way their phases are flipped and interacting when brought back together to recreate a stereo image. It's great for taking that side output and using mono FX modules that when brought back into the module create stereo images with those FX on them from super wide to more subtle stereo images (with a dry unprocessed mid to keep things focused). It can also do some unity summing, CV difference / averaging. Lots of patches, lots to get through, skip through the index below if you can't watch all the way through.

For a quick summary the Devil Fish has AUDIO IN, so you can run anything you want through the Filter, Overdrive and Filter FM. It is VERY versatile sounding. You can make drums and percussion sounds because the Decay goes lower than a 303. The resonance goes higher than a 303. You can use the filter with Overdrive at "0" (no VCA volume) to make the filter ring and create all kinds of weird chirps and Sci-Fi sound FX that nothing else can mimic.

The sound is fatter than anything I've ever heard, especially with the Devil Fish Overdrive circuit.

Thanks to Johannes Taelman for making it so easy for me to get started making synthesizers!
This has helped me coping with my synthesizer addiction for a while...

At its core, its a 5 voice digital FM synth which has 3 modulators.
- Its being sequenced by the Arturia Keystep.
You can choose how much of each modulator can effect the carrier and you have an attack & decay knob for one of the modulators.
This makes for a nice FM sounding machine that is easily modified, but also lacking depth.

- It comes with a 4 stage envelope and has an infinity knob to basically sustain the notes forever.

- You can switch out the filter & resonance knobs to be controlling a bitcrusher effect OR the super far-out-granular effect you hear all over the video.

Where it ironically says "Instrument Selection" you have reverb and a knob that controls either reverb amount, decay or lowpass filtering on the reverb it self.

The front panel and the wooden box was laser cut and laser engraved. I used 3D software to design and measure the box and a vector software to create the layout of the front and back panel.
-I would not recommend using acrylic for the front panel, it bends...

Granulate!
Quanta is a full-featured ten-voice true stereo granular synthesizer, with up to a hundred 1000ms grains per voice, and full control over the grain state, with direct randomization and modulation of most parameters. Drag-and-drop a sample (WAV, AIFF, Ogg, or FLAC) on to the window and go to work.

Synthesize!
With two multi-mode filters (with LP, HP, BP and notch in 2-pole and 4-pole topologies), and a "sidecar" virtual-analog oscillator and noise generator that can be used in addition to, or injected into, the grain engine, Quanta is a fully capable subtractive synth in its own right, and will work as a granular or subtractive (or both) synth without any sample at all.

Modulate!
Quanta has mod coming out its ears. First up are four of our new FEGs (Flexible Envelope Generator), a 99-point looping function generator with optional host tempo sync. Then add two arbitrary-waveshape LFOs, a multi-source sample-and-hold module, and fully user-controllable MIDI assignments, with nearly every control on the panel as a destination.

Quanta is customizable to your taste and playing style. With full MPE support, it can take advantage of the extended control set of your Linnstrument, Seaboard, Soundplane, Continuum, or other MPE controller, and support for TUN files lets you use tuning tables. The resizable Hi-DPI GUI lets you adjust the size to match your visual needs, and the cross-platform preset mechanism lets you share your creations with you.

TRON: Arpeggio Sequencing/Programming

"The MB, whilst having the usual arpeggio sequencing patterns (i.e. up, down, up/down, random etc), can also be programmed. Very handy. And the included work ('The Son of Flynn' from the Tron Legacy soundtrack) is a great piece to demonstrate.

The arpeggiator - in this mode - will arpeggiate any 4-note chord in the manner you program it. The blue lights illustrate the steps.

Reading vertically from low-high: the bottom 4 squares represent notes 1-4 in octave 1, the next 4 up represent octave 2 etc. And any step can be deactivated - simply push the red button to switch that step on/off.

Very visual, very easy to program. And being all there in front of you, editing individual steps etc is easy.

The other day I was having a look at a JD-XA, and was talking through it with the Roland rep. Stunning machine, but one of the potential issues seems to be when you deactivate a step, reactivating it resets the pitch. With the MB, if you deactivate a step then reactivate it, the programmed pitch is maintained.

However, in Roland's defense, the rep I was talking to was quite new on the job. I'll need to research it more, as the JD-XA is quite the powerhouse - and massively under-rated.

Back on track - I wasn't too fussed RE exactly replicating the tone of the original track, as the purpose of the vid is to show the arpeggiator outwith its standard patterns.

"TRAVELER precisely models the acoustic phenomenon of the Doppler effect, with a powerful and intuitive graphical path editor to determine a sound's virtual movement. A common example of Doppler shift is the change of pitch heard when a vehicle sounding a horn approaches and recedes from an observer.

TRAVELER features a fully fledged 2D path editor allowing you to precisely shape the motion path of the sound source. Further it is possible to freely position the listener in relation to the path.
TRAVELER offers intuitive control over the speed of the sound source, path length and the overall doppler path duration.

TRAVELER also comes with an onboard loop and granular sample player. The granular sample player allows synchronized playback to the doppler path. This makes it possible to playback the desired sound effect at different durations while remaining everything in perfect sync.

After being processed by the doppler effect engine TRAVELER features a powerful post effects section. "Hey everyone I was so stoked when Matthew Fetcher asked me to create some presets for the world's first FREE open source synthesizer for iPad. This is just another cutting edge one of it's kind projects that I've been involved in over the past two decades and I'm honored to be a small part of it. This video demonstrates what I did with some of my own sounds using nothing but Synth One and my DAW. I recorded the midi tracks as audio and printed them direct from my iTrack Dock and Synth one. I did not process these sounds other than EQ the tracks. All of the sounds you hear are from my preset kit in Synth One including the drums. Thank you for watching.
