Lost in Kiev is a blend of epic and massive post-rock, driven by the energy of rock mixed with electronic sounds. Their first two albums, Motions and Nuit Noire (on Dunk! records) were both well-received by the press and audience at their live shows. Recently, the group released their new album Persona via Pelagic records. ARCHE is a solitary voyage that invites the listener to a forgotten universe at the convergence of an astral cinematographic ambiance laden with ascending melodies.

Those of you that know me know i'm more of a hardware guy.
However every now and again a plug in comes along that really blows me away. Synthmaster One most definitely falls into that category!

For this soundset the guys at KV331 Audio sampled my OB-6 and Prophet 6 with great care and detail. They then sent me an updated version of Synthmaster One containing the samples and i was extremely impressed with how well they sounded. It really did sound like i was playing my OB-6/P6.
I used these samples to create many of the sounds in this set, including some of my signature patches that you may have heard in my previous OB-6 and P6 soundsets. This may be music to the ears of those of you who like my OB6 and P6 soundsets but can't use them as you don't own those synths.

One thing i really enjoyed whilst making this soundset was having the ability to mix analog style oscillators with FM or Wavetables style oscillators. To be able to create sounds that sound like the love child of a DX7 & Juno 60 is so exciting and incredibly inspiring to me. This feature has enabled me to create certain sounds within this soundset that i simply couldn't do with my hardware.

As mentioned above this soundset is free with the latest version of Synthmaster One so if you haven't yet updated, do so.
If you don't yet own a copy of Synthmaster One, get it!

"Keyboard function is not working properly, light stays on and machine thinks a key is constantly being pressed, gate stays open."

Hmm... If this is a j-wire version it could be one of the wires is simply bent up and making constant contact. I once picked up a Pro One from Guitar Center for $125 as faulty for this reason. I opened it up, bent the j-wire back and it all was good. No idea if that is the problem with this one. The same SN was listed back in 2016 as a j-wire model.

"A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the frantic energy of chasing deadlines. It's been a ton of fun to pair up these older Elektron devices, as it shows how each is complementary to the others. The Monomachine and Machinedrum also evoke a certain sound of music for me, from the mid-aughts to early 20-teens. It's also a good reminder that despite the new veneer, the Octatrack is showing its age (in mostly a good way).

"This is a very rough demonstration of the sound capabilities of this dirty and rather lovely filter, which is inspired by the MS-20. There are five parts of this video, which are each basic sketches.

The key point about this filter is that it has a very pronounced resonance and high audio input levels. So at low audio input, you need to make sure the resonance is also low otherwise it wails, whereas at high gain you get a really cool distortion but need to put the resonance high.

It's a great filter - but one which needs to be treated with care.

Also: my editing is rubbish. This video is one of my first efforts, so it's ropey and amateurish. But less ropey and amateurish than the last effort! Gotta keep learning...."

Sequarallel Module with the Reflex LiveLoop Sampler!

"At last I got around to connecting the Sequarallel's MIDI out to the Reflex LiveLoop's (w/Flash8 exp) MIDI control input. The results were not disappointing!
I used a demo sequence created a while back for the Flash-8 when it came out, but modified it to play MIDI drums and added 8 Loop Markers for the Seqarallel (Note#121).

What it does is records a few seconds of whatever audio is at the inputs by creating 10 slices (there can be up to 400!) then playing them and twisting them with PlayFX, granulizing, stuttering etc.
This is all from the Seqarallel which is running under the modular clock rate so it's all in sync.
I mixed the input with the MIDI percussion being played so when recording, the beats are always there at the start of slices, thus acting as a rhythmic beacon. This means any audio coming in will sound great! And it does :))

After recording it in, away it went. Jumping around the sequence was fun, but transposing produced really unpredictable stuff to happen as many of the Reflex's functions are note dependent (like PlayFX button, Record button etc) so that's probably a no-no.
Otherwise it was amazing.
Jumping to Loop 0 of course starts recording a new sample slice set."

"Støv is the norwegian word for "dust". This is a dusty hip-hop pattern with the #elektron #digitakt, #bastl #thyme and #heat. There is a saw lfo from the Thyme which is assigned to the short delay parameter, resulting in a subtle glitchy background for the beat. The output is run through the Analog Heat with generous drive, low and high boost, some pseudo compressor settings and high-pass filter with resonance for a low-end enhancement."

Marbles from Mutable Instruments is sequencing Rings, which is going through a stereo filter, Freak from Vult in this case, and from there to the Mimeophon. Stages is modulating the frequency of Freak and also a few parameters on Rings. Anyway, Rings into Mimeophon anyone?

"This is such a versatile oscillator and can produce simple pure tones to very rich complex ones! Its output is great for filter using subtractive synthesis techniques but I didn't use ANY filters in this video at all, just lots of modulation sources and reverb/delay effects.

"So what if you were to make a techno tune using nothing but sounds synthesized on a Yamaha PSS380, including the drums, sampled into a Volca Sample? These are the kind of questions that keep me awake at night, so that's what I did for this video.

I'm really quite fond of the Yamaha PSS380. It's a really gritty sounding bargain basement FM synth with just barely enough controls to produce the sounds you need. But good enough to get some great percussion sounds, bass and some damn weird stuff going when it's pushed in the right direction. I'll review it at some point I think.

I ran the whole thing through a pair of DIY flatline optical compressors just to fatten it all up a bit.

I decided to make a Volca Sample pack available of these sounds. You can load them in using Vosyr, Korg Audio Pocket or Caustic Editor for Volca Sample:

"Yamaha DX7 with real-time touch control panel. You can't do this stuff with menus. I wanted dynamic control, so I designed this touch-controller. It uses a unique design for reducing interference form external electrical noise, which lets it be very responsive...

The sensors I use are virtually immune to external electrical noise, which lets them be very responsive & reliable. This is a crude concept prototype. It uses midi to communicate with the synthesizer, and a parallel interface to an old laptop computer for the actual computing. Sure beats using menus."

I patched the Bandpass filter in a feedback loop to make it self-oscillate to use it as a VCO. Then I created a stereo autopan patch with a slow sine wave LFO, the Adder and two VCAs. And finally I set both envelopes into arpeggiator mode and to sequence the Bandpass filter and VCO 1, which is FM'ed by VCO 2. The aliasing and noise comes from the onboard lo-fi delay effect and the pop sound is the slow random LFO modulating the stereo position abruptly. I liked those artefacts so I left them in the patch as they are."

"Incredible vintage sound, and works near perfectly, except for TWO MINOR FLAWS:

1) The pot on the delay slider is loose, and the slider itself is slightly wobbly. The delay slider usually works as intended between 0% and about 25%, but then if you push it higher than 25% the note just drones on perpetually.


2) The wire on one side of the power transformer is loose, and so if the wire is bent at the wrong angle the synth won’t power on. However, I have the loose section of wire bound up tightly with electrical tape, which keeps things working as they should unless the wire is really twisted around badly. Plus I’m sure it would be a very easy fix."

"Works as a sound module ONLY. All the sliders, knobs, midi, audio works. Had the red glue issue before, all of the key weights are gone except for 3 keys. The last 2 keys has some glue residue but it was soak so it is no longer sticky. 3 keys appears lighter color than the rest of the keys. The last highest C key has a crack on the inside as seen in the picture. Cosmetically the front, side, rear, & bottom panels is in very good cosmetic shape with just minor marks/scratches."

"This was recently gone over by a reputable tech here in Philly (Belltone): they recapped the power supply, made it US-voltage compaitble, and fully calibrated it. The previous owner installed the IO midi interface, and this comes with the rather rare original hard case! It spent most of its like in the hands of a collector, and it shows! Everything is working 100% and this is ready to rock your world.

The Promars is hugely underrated and I would argue it's one of Roland's best monosynths--it's the only one they made that has two oscillators AND two sub-oscillators! It captures the patch-saving technology of the late-70s, while retaining that classic Roland tone."

"Straight to the point - it has just 1 functional issue (which for a gear perfectionist like myself makes me crazy). Absolutely everything works fantastic - it is in excellent condition and extremely well serviced. In all of the regular voice modes all 8 voices/2 OSC/Sub perform wonderfully - as designed. As do all buttons, knobs, display, outputs. But - when you switch to layered/split mode it drops a voice. 7 sound. All 8 sound in regular mode - 7 in layer/split. To be honest - it is quite usable regardless and in the mix it is not going to be noticeable. But if you are super-particular about perfect equipment and something like this would just bug you (like it does me) - it isn't the synth for you.

Apart from this the SX-240 is a great sounding instrument that bridges the pre-80's and 80's sound nicely. Though it has SSM filters and an ensemble effect it is not a PolySix, and it's definitely not a Juno - it truly sits in it's own pocket. Very musical. Not many 8 voice analog polys out there - to begin with - and fewer that can layer and split. Has the "ensemble" effect, HPF, Ring Mod, Patch storage. Etc Etc. And Tauntek OS increases midi control."
