Expressive E - Touche SE (Modulation Creativity) with Latest Lie v1.5 Update

Innovative Music Australia

"The Expressive E - Touche SE controller really is an amazingly dynamic and sensitive controller to help bring human expression into your digital music world!

With the latest release of Lie v1.5 we got to check out on what can be done with this fantastic device during an improvised jam!"

Some additional details via https://www.expressivee.com/4-lie:

"Touché’s companion software "Lié" allows users to easily host and unlock the true potential of their third-party VST instrument library and hardware synthesizers. Users can quickly map synth parameters to the Touché and Touché SE interface, creating sounds and performances with an expressive depth they may never have realised their software or hardware synths were capable of.

Paired with the extraordinary control possibilities of Touché (classic version only), your hardware synthesizer take on a whole new sonic dimension. Get up and running in seconds with more than 250 presets for popular hardware instruments from companies such as Moog, DSI, Korg, Elektron, Roland, Nord, Novation and many more... Hardware presets can then be stored inside Touché to play with your synthesizers without a computer.

PLAY WITH HARDWARE PRESETS
Based on the factory presets from a selection of synths, they cleverly map Touché’s axes of movements to relevant parameters. Discover our hardware presets

CHOOSE MIDI CC
Fill the 8 slots of Lié with different MIDI CC messages, and set min/max values and sensitivity curves for each.

MEMORY VIEW
Store up to 24 hardware presets inside Touché by using the Memory View window of Lié.

CREATE PRESETS FROM A TEMPLATE
Our templates replace the MIDI CC numbers with the actual names of the parameters. A full list of supported synths is available here.

CHOOSE VOLTAGES
Customize the four CV outputs of Touché from 0V/+5 V to -10V/+10V, draw sensitivity curves and send gates.

NAVIGATION
Scroll through presets and banks in standalone mode, using the two buttons and colour-coded LED of Touché.

Touché SE (Software Edition) adds expression, depth and musicality to software synthesizers and plug-ins. It includes a sound library with more than 250 factory sounds, pre-mapped to take full advantage of Touché SE’s extensive control capabilities, as well as including more than 250 presets for third-party VST instruments."

Todd Barton Meditation Environments

Todd Barton

"This Friday on my Bandcamp I'll be releasing a digital download of my rare original cassette release, Meditation Environments, from 1986. To be played softly . . .

The Donation:
All proceeds will always go to the The United Way Fire Fund for aid, relief and rebuilding the communities near me, Talent and Phoenix, Oregon that were devastated by the Almeda Fire which began on September 8, 2020 just north of Ashland and swept through those neighboring towns. I have also built a webpage with links to specific donation paths for your further consideration: Indigenous, low income, and immigrant families, seasonal workers, Oregon Shakespeare Festival employees, and many more.

The Album
I composed this 1986 and was clearly influenced by Brian Eno's Ambient I: Music for Airports. Like its model I would recommend listening at a soft volume and even in the background. There is a "sonic wallpaper" quality to be enjoyed. In 1986 I sold the dubbed cassettes by mail order out of my studio. A few years later it had a limited commercial cassette run via World Room Music.

Usually I create a title before, during or after composing a piece. In this case, I had no titles in mind and used/consulted the I Ching for these two titles. 'I' means Providing Nourishment. 'Shih Ho' is Biting Through."

Introducing RUNNING ORDER: 6hp 2-channel trigger sequencer by Endorphine.es

TheEndorphines

"Running Order is two tracks trigger generator: it can be a precise master clock or manipulate with incoming clock and works great in use as a sub-sequencer/divider in your eurorack environment

• 6 HP width, 30 mm depth (with plugged ribbon cable), power requirements: +12V: 30mA, -12V: 10 mA

• Zero-jitter clock generation: less than 50 microseconds internal clock jitter

• 101 style 1/16th note input mode (step/rest) with manual or CV controllable amount of triggers repeats when the active trigger step happens

• Euclidean mode enabled for each tracks where we set Euclidean total steps amount in the circle and then amount of triggers happening in that circle,

• Separate synchronization (reset) inputs, sync for track 1 is normalled to sync track 2

• clock divider for incoming external clock allows to quickly obtain various musical divisions on the fly incl. triplets of course but more importantly tuplets mode allows to stretch desired amount of triggers happening into a single bar

• separate mute buttons for each track

• 8 patterns of triggers sequences stored in the module and recalled on the next power on"

"John Bowen Solaris Synthesizer - Serial Number 122 - Built 2013

Beautiful, mint, almost brand new condition John Bowen Solaris in white finish. No scratches anywhere. Looks, works and sounds like new.

Has non-detented pots, but they work smoothly with no glitching or jumping. Volume knob has a very slight wobble that John Bowen himself confirmed is normal on some units manufactured during this time. There is no issue, no crackling or noise. Works perfectly.

Includes, power brick with US power cord, CF Card, USB CF card reader, printed owner's manual and original shipping documentation. Ships in original box and packing foam inserts, which will be supplemented with bubble wrap as needed."

Note the red gig bag has Nord Lead 2, Nord Lead 3, and Electro printed on it, so it's a later case.

The Nord Lead was the first virtual analog synth to be released and imo it's still great. It has plenty of character. It also came with Prophet-5 presets that sound surprisingly close to the original, some dead on.

About the Course
Tired of presets? Need more complex and interesting-sounding patches in your productions? Or maybe you want to be able to figure out the sounds from other artists' tracks? Whether you're a producer looking to level up your sound design chops or just want to have some fun diving down a synth-fueled rabbit hole, this course is designed to help you craft better synth sounds.

Throughout this course, we’ll look at popular synths, sounds, and post-processing techniques to help you develop strategies for creating better sounds from the ground up. From epic house leads to snarling dubstep basses and vintage '80s keyboard sounds, we’ll show you how to create patches step by step. Along the way, we’ll explain concepts related to subtractive synthesis, wavetable synthesis, FM synthesis, and sampling. In the end, you'll have a better idea of what type of synth to reach for in a particular situation, understand the ins and outs of creating patches, how to program better parts, and make better sounds than you ever thought you could.

Étude No.2 - Arbhar/Lúbadh/Morphagene/Desmodus Versio/Mimeophon/Rampage/Muxlicer

Omri Cohen

"If you like what I do and want to support my work, consider joining me on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/omricohen

Here are some patch notes:
--------------------------
- Arbhar is set to wavetable mode and the Keystep Pro is sending pitch information to it.
- I'm using a looping function from Rampage to modulate the spread, and the other function is being triggered by the Keystep Pro, and it's opening the density of Arbhar.
- I'm also clocking Muxlicer with the Keystep Pro, which is sequencing the position of the wavetable.
- Arbhar is set to have its built-in reverb.
- I recorded Arbhar into Morphagene and Lubadh.
- Morphagene is playing the recording one octave lower and is going through Desmodus Versio.
- Lubadh is playing a small segment of the recording and its starting point is being modulated by the MIN and MAX outputs of Rampage. It's then going through the Mimeophon."

Mother Brain Boss Theme (Super Metroid) - Live Synth Cover

GLASYS

"Here's the Mother Brain final boss battle theme from Super Metroid arranged and performed live on my synthesizers + finger drumming controller.

I've covered a lot of Metroid recently and I was actually planning to move on to something else, but this haunting theme was stuck in my head and I felt compelled to play it. It's fitting for the times, I suppose!

This track is available as a high quality audio download for my Patrons:
https://www.patreon.com/glasys

Technical details:

All sounds performed live simultaneously (no pre-recorded material or overdubs).

The left hand horn / bass sound was programmed on the Sequential Prophet XL even though I'm controlling it from the mini keyboard on my Arcadia controller.

The right hand spooky sound consists of multiple layers: A pad created on the Prophet XL, a few stacked / detuned church organs from HALion Sonic and SWAM Trombones (the latter being mapped to one octave only). All these layers are pitch-swept simultaneously using an expression pedal.

Drum sounds were programmed with Native Instruments Battery 4.

The intro sound is played on the Arturia Microbrute which is running through Chase Bliss Audio's Thermae and MOOD pedals. The 'wet' knob on the Thermae is all the way up which is why there's a delay between what my fingers are doing and the sound you hear.

Hope you enjoy, thanks so much for your support!"

YAMAHA CS-40M - Review, Sounds & Demo | Analog Synthesizer

synth4ever

"Yamaha CS-40M analog synthesizer review, sounds and demo. This Yamaha CS-40M review provides an overview of the synth, the CS40M's features and functions, and an extensive sound demo of CS-40M patches, presets and live improvisation.

TIMECODES
===========
00:00 - Intro
00:49 - Overview
02:03 - VCO/EG/LFO
06:04 - Ring Mod/Noise
07:15 - VCF/VCA/EG
12:23 - Performance Controls
15:29 - Conclusion
16:45 - Sound Demo

Introduced in 1979, the Yamaha CS-40M is a 2-voice duophonic monosynth with extensive modulation and sound shaping capabilities. It has a 44 note keyboard, 36 knobs, 12 sliders and lots of buttons for hands-on control and editing. There are also 20 patches of memory to store patches and presets.

The Yamaha CS40m has 2 VCOs per voice with triangle, sawtooth, and square (pulse/PWM) per oscillator. It also has 1 LFO (sine, up-ramp, down-ramp, square, and sample-and-hold) with speed and depth control, an AR (attack/release) envelope generator for each VCO/LFO/Ring Mod, and Ring Modulator with speed and depth control.

Also on-board the Yamaha CS0-40M is a simple mixer for both VCOs and noise, as well as a multimode VCF (LP/BP/HP) with cutoff, resonance and ASDR envelope controls which can be modulated via LFO (sine, saw, inverted saw, square, sample & hold). VCO AR and VCF ADSR envelopes can also be inverted.

The CS-40M's VCA features 2 sinewaves for deep bass, as well as modulation via multiple waveshapes (sine, saw, inverted saw, square) plus ADSR envelope control. The VCO, VCF and VCA envelopes also have x5 switches to extend their effect. The Yamaha CS-40M also has CV/Trigger outputs for each voice and CV inputs as well as hands-on performance controls for portamento, sustain, brilliance, volume and filter/pitch.

Although the Yamaha CS 40M only has a single LFO, it can modulate the 2 VCOs, VCF and VCA using different waveforms at each destination. This allows for more complex modulations to be achieved. The Yamaha CS-40M's tone can be described as dusty, earthy, mellow, but also more aggressive at times depending on how it is programmed. It is also a fun synth for analog textures, noise and fx.

The Yamaha CS-40M is quite a large and heavy synth, still somewhat obscure, and not as readily available on the second hand market compared to other more popular synths. As a vintage duophonic analog monosynth, it is capable of interesting sounds and timbres that some may find unique for their music or sound design. As such I do recommend keeping an eye out for the Yamaha CS-40M if you like its overall sound and features."

Roland FANTOM CV/GATE out to SYSTEM-500 - "Weightless" song by gattobus

gattobus

"This performance was played and recorded in real time using Roland FANTOM as master controller and SYSTEM-500 modular synthesizer as main sound source.

FANTOM CV OUT 1 is controlling the Bass Part (left hand) and CV/GATE 2 is controlling the Lead Part (right hand).
Modwheel's been assigned to CV OUT 3 controlling the Filter Cutoff and VCA.

I used a DrumLoop sample (made with TR-8s), loaded in FANTOM Sample Pad and processed through its Analog Filter.

BOSS Analog Chorus CE-2W was used on the bass part and DM-2W Analog Delay was used on the Lead Part.

SoundToys LittlePlate was used as master reverb.
Recorded, mixed and mastered on Ableton Live 10."

"Fully serviced earlier this year including new display and new tact switches throughout (the working bit of the buttons, all have been replaced) and keybed fully cleaned. An absolutely amazing synth this, check the video by Matt Johnson of Jamiroquai [posted here] to see on reason why these are now getting the recognition they deserve (although they were always a secret weapon for sound designers). I have a VSynth XT too and am only keeping that one over this due to space constraints. Time Trip pad and D Beams work great (both of which I'll miss for 'on the fly' madness), everything operates as it should."

"One of the 120 limited editons of the Erebus V3, sporting the awesome 80s colours of their Hypnosis multi-effect box. This unit is complete (adapter, wristband, card), but comes without the original box, as I used a friend in the US to get this across the Atlantic. I also bought 10 pink patch cables that go beautifully with this unit, which are included in this offer.

I bought this synth quite impuslively at the start of the pandemic, as I wanted something new to play with, and I really dislike the regular version's color. I jumped on this unit when I saw it for sale, but then, a few weeks later a somewhat affordable MS-20M crossed my path and I haven't touched this Dreadbox ever since. I don't think I even made it past 10 hours of playing time. It has no signs of use. Everything is in perfect condition. As you can see in the photos, the power supply can be changed to fit either a US or European socket."

Wendy Carlos Bogus "Bio" Alert

via Wendy Carlos' website:

Please be aware there’s a purported “Biography” on me just released. It belongs on the fiction shelf. No one ever interviewed me, nor anyone I know. There's zero fact-checking. Don’t recognize myself anywhere in there—weird. Sloppy, dull and dubious, it's hardly an objective academic study as it pretends to be.

This slim, mean-sprited volume is based on several false premises. All of it is speculation taken out of context. The key sources are other people’s write-ups of interviews done for magazine articles. There’s simply no way to know what’s true or not—nothing is first-hand.

The book is presumptuous. Pathetically, it accepts as “factual” a grab-bag of online urban legends, including anonymous axes to grind. The author imputes things she doesn’t understand, misses the real reasons for what was done or not done. She’s in way over her head, outside any areas of expertise, and even defames my dear deceased parents—shame!

=====

Well, now you know, and have the victim's honest reactions. Wish there were more one could do about needless personal attacks, but we have to understand how essential freedom of speech is, even when it permits such abuse. Have dealt with stereotyping most of my life, a pretty tough hide by now. But aren’t there new, more interesting targets?
Unless you consider “academic” books a form of contact sport, you really might want to reconsider your time and money. —Wendy Carlos, August 2020.

Precursor Mobile, Open-Hardware, RISC-V System-on-Chip (SoC) Seeks Crowdfuning

For the DIYers.

"CPU Emulation: While the reference FPGA ships with a 32-bit RISC-V CPU running at 100MHz, it can be reconfigured to emulate a wide range of retro-CPUs, from the 6502 to the Z-80 to something we’ve never even heard of. Furthermore, Precursor’s FPGA-based design can accurately emulate old sound chips in hardware, and its modular keyboard can be swapped out for an alternative that more closely resembles your favorite old controller. Be warned, however: it will no longer fit in your pocket if you mount a joystick on it."

CP3- Audio Mixer [USER REVIEW + Demo] by Feedback DIY SMD Eurorack

gstormelectro

"Audio and Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2020

This is the second video in a series of user reviews. [1st video here]
I am focusing on DIY eurorack modules by the maker Feedback.
In other videos I have covered their Static and Squeeze modules.
Today I am looking at the DIY CP3- Mixer derived from the Moog modular.
I will be giving some quick thoughts about the build.
But focus more on demo-ing some sounds.
The CP3-type mixer uses all discrete components, there are no IC chips inside!
At the end I give some concluding remarks.
But don't take my word for it.
In this video I will run all sorts of sounds through the CP3- so you can judge for yourself.

Blog: Four voice patch with Horologic Solum

Noise Engineering

From the blog: https://www.noiseengineering.us/blog/...
Preorder Horologic Solum/Horologic Uter: https://www.noiseengineering.us/shop/...

"When used as a clock generator, the HS has a variety of uses. The top output is always the base clock, and the three outputs below that are divisions of it. Those outputs can be set to 2/4/8, 3/5/7, or 4/16/64 respectively with a flick of the “2 0 4” switch. Personally, I like to use the 4/16/64 setting when I want to keep a bunch of sequencers in sync and phase. I can route the root clock to their clock inputs, and use one of the slower clocks to keep them all in phase. The 3/5/7 setting I like a lot for slower, more experimental patches where I want to move away from a 4/4 grid. Especially when paired with something like Integra Funkitus to add some probability to the clock outputs, you can ditch the sequencers entirely and create an interesting patch just with some unusual divisions.
Let’s try something a bit more traditional, though: here, we’re using Horologic Solum to clock a Mimetic Digitalis and an Intellijel Steppy to trigger and modulate a four-voice patch."

Blog: Swing with Horologic Solum

Noise Engineering

"Since HS is voltage controllable, there are a lot of things that we can do to make our clocks more interesting. Gradual tempo changes can be automated with a slow LFO, or we can do more experimental things by patching envelopes, random CV, and other signals here for some more unusual results. However, there’s a more traditional use for it, too: swing! All we have to do is get a CV sequencer and clock it with HS, then feed the sequence into the CV input on HS. Let’s take a listen to what it can sound like."

Blog: Drum machine jam with Horologic Solum

"HS is a Eurorack module, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t use it with other pieces of gear, too! A lot of gear can take analog triggers or clock, which means that we can use Horologic Solum as well as Horologic Uter to control a plethora of other devices. HU, with its extra outs, is especially useful when using lots of gear since you have so many clock options. Here, we’re jamming on a rack with a voice, some sequencing, and some FX, alongside an external drum machine."

All three banks of factory presets are loaded up and sound as glorious as ever, perhaps better by softening with age.

The Kenton midi retrofit is the only midi kit i'm aware of that allows midi control of the cutoff frequency, which is very useful to have. That alone costs almost $600 and another couple hundred bucks to install. Trust me, putting that thing in is a hassle so be glad it's already done!"

Softube Model 72 Synthesizer System first look and sounds

Gearjunkies

"The Model 72 Synthesizer System is Softube's latest plug-in. It's a reincarnation of a famous 70's synthesizer, can you guess which one? In this video Marc shows you this new soft synth, and you get an audio demo."

Priced at $99

"Based on a classic analog monophonic synth from the early '70s, with the emphasis on sound quality
A component-modeled marvel that’s true to its era with actual use cases and tricks correctly replicated in the software to take you to funkytown
An entire system that includes a model of the original instrument, an FX version, an Amp Room module, and seven Modular modules

Imagine traveling in time to the early '70s, an era where new and experimental sounds were shaping pop music and taking it a step further. Softube's Model 72 Synthesizer System is your vintage synth time machine. It's component modeled down to the smallest details with from 1972 hardware in pristine condition with all the quirks and non-linearities intact, hence the name Model 72.

The result is incredibly authentic sound, with all the warmth and smoothness heard in countless records. Now imagine this classic has traveled into the future to pick up some contemporary features like doubling and spread to create a stereo like sound image and evolve into a full system with multiple versions for different applications. Wish you were here? Take the Autobahn.

Designed by Experts, Built on Legacy

Softube has a long history of modeling professional gear. After nearly two decades working in collaboration with premium pro audio brands like Tube-Tech, Solid State Logic, Chandler Limited®, Weiss Engineering, and Trident, we have a solid track record recreating indisputable classics in software form that sound precisely like their hardware counterparts. This includes expertise in synthesizer plug-ins like Modular, Statement Lead, and Monoment Bass.

Model 72 is built on this legacy, and we took the same meticulous approach we always do – everything needs to be exact, with skillful recording, precise testing, and fine-tuning to sound exactly like the corresponding hardware or even better in terms of clarity. Nothing less."

KORG FX - Finite granular pitch shifter

Sinevibes

"Finite by Sinevibes is a granular pitch shifter effect plugin for KORG prologue, minilogue xd and NTS-1. Product page: https://www.sinevibes.com/korgfinite/"

"Finite is a granular pitch shifter. It uses real-time buffer recording and dual variable playback heads to speed the incoming audio up or slow it down, changing its pitch. This algorithm features high-quality spline interpolation for ultra-smooth pitch adjustment within the range of two octaves. Its built-in feedback line also applies the pitch shift recursively – enabling creation of truly ethereal, spacey sounds.

"Dispersion by Sinevibes is a bouncing ball delay effect plugin for KORG prologue, minilogue xd and NTS-1. Product page: https://www.sinevibes.com/korgdispers..."

"Dispersion is a bouncing ball delay. It runs up to 10 delay taps sequentially, with their times spread according to a unique non-linear formula. This produces a series of sound repetitions much like bounces of a ball that has been dropped onto a surface. Each round of bounces is calculated to fit within a particular tempo fraction, making this a rhythmically precise and musically rich effect. The algorithm comes in two versions: with natural time spread (+), as well as inverted spread (-).

"Blend is a multi-voice chorus. It’s comprised of three fully independent chorus layers, each modulated by its own parabolically-shaped oscillator. Due to relative modulation phase offsets between the three oscillators, this algorithm creates lush unison and ensemble effects with great density and natural smoothness. Thanks to its wide parameter range, it is also capable of producing highly dissonant sounds.

Keyboard Mag. July '98 | What Was In It?

Espen Kraft

"Madonnas album 'Ray of Light' is an awesome album and back in the late 90s when it was released I listened a lot to it because I loved the somewhat groundbreaking work done by William Orbit on it. In terms of filtering and chopped up vocal effects.

Internet was still pretty new back then and magazines were often how we gained intel on how major productions were made. This is the magazine that made me aware of the ADR PanScan (as Orbit explains inside how he used it on Madonnas vocals) I will show you very soon.

By 1998, sample libraries were starting to take of more and more and the Gigasampler had been launched. To have a major sampler in a plugin form was so awesome after years of having to buy big, expensive bricks of electronics to get some long samples going."

After Later Audio Popple // Stereo Eurorack Filter - demo & LOTS of patch tips

DivKidVideo

"Here’s the new stereo Eurorack filter ‘Popple’ from Seattle based After Later Audio. It’s a stereo filter design based on the Mutable Instruments Ripples v1 circuit. You have stereo inputs and then stereo outputs for band pass, 2 pole low pass and 4 pole low pass. Stereo cut off, and resonant controls as well as CV inputs are present plus the addition of attenuverters to fit the cut off frequencies on the left and right sides and there’s addition left and right FM inputs to modulate the two sides of the stereo filter independently. As always I’ve tried to cram plenty of patch tips into the video so I hope you gain some ideas and patch tips for your own systems."

TIMING INDEX // SECTIONS
00:00 Hello & patch previews
01:13 Popple feature run down
02:12 Raw filter sweeps demo
03:36 Dual mono filtering
05:11 Filtering stereo beats with ducking, auto wah and audio rate modulations

12:56 Dual LFO oscillations & sub audio wobbles
14:10 Filter pings
15:14 Stereo feedback turning sine waves into saw waves
17:03 Dual slew limiter and resonant LFOs

"Popple is an 8hp multimode stereo filter based on the Mutable Instruments Ripples V1 filter section. Popple maintains the buttery smoothness of Ripples filter while giving you two separate audio paths. The audio paths share a resonance, control, a frequency cutoff control, resonance CV input, and a v/oct cutoff CV input. Each channel then has its own cutoff CV input with attenuverters (which are normalled to a 2.5V signal).

Popple will also self-oscillate at high resonance settings, when coupled with the v/oct CV control. Popple can act as a dual sine wave oscialltor as well.

Presale notes

We are running a presale right now. Modules will ship on Oct 7th. All source files will be released on our Github on Oct 7th."

Arturia PolyBrute Analog Synth "Random Patch Genaration" Walkthrough.

Sound Provider

"Here is a feat I love on synthesizer , when you're lacking inspiration or looking for a fresh idea, it's always cool to have a random patch generation function on a synth.
So the Arturia PolyBrute can do this , and after someone ask me about that on a forum ( Gearslutz I think ) I did this video to show what you can expect with it.
What you see on the video:Me generating Random patches and playing with and turning the morph button to explore the preset. I've edited a little to remove the least interesting parts.
Few thoughts about the function, most of the time we generate pads, some lead and bass and very little percussive sound, it is often necessary to retune some osc for the morphing to be tuned, but sometimes the intermediate positions of the morphing create magical moments.

Random Patch Generation on the Manual:
"6.3. Random patch generation
PolyBrute can generate a random patch for you by choosing sounds A and B from different patches, changing the morph knob value, moving the result to sound A, and then repeating most of that process a random number of times. The generated patch can then be tweaked, saved as a Snapshot, or saved as a new preset.
This feature is found at Settings/Preset Info/Generate. Press [Assign 3] to generate the random patch."
