STAR WARS Lightsaber AMSR // Soma Labs Lyra 8 Drone Synth Demo

Published on Jul 31, 2019 Ron Cavagnaro

"Programming and Improvisation by Ron Cavagnaro. All of the sound you hear is 100% from the standalone unit. Since this is improvised, a few parts might not sound exactly like lightsabers , but watch as I mold them into the sound eventually.

ASMR signifies the subjective experience of 'low-grade euphoria' characterized by 'a combination of positive feelings and a distinct static-like tingling sensation on the skin'."

Polynorth - a hybrid analog/digital polyphonic synthesizer

Published on Jul 31, 2019 Jon Petter Skagmo

via skagmo.com

"The Polynorth is my first attempt at designing a polyphonic synthesizer. It's got a completely analog filter section, combined with a powerful 200 MHz 32-bit microcontroller.

I've always wanted to build an analog polyphonic synthesizer, but they often end up being very large and complex because the size of the electronics pretty much scales linearly with the number of voices.

In many ways I think the filters are the hardest part of a digital synthesizer to get to "sound analog", so I figured out a good compromise would be to keep the filters analog and do all the rest with a microcontroller. The mostly digital architecture also has some important benefits:

- Flexible internal signal routing like a modular synth, but without a ton of patch leads
- More advanced modulation options (FM)
- Patch store/recall (including the routing)
- Much smaller size

I stumbled upon the SSI2144 filter, which is a modern remake of the classic SSM2044. It's very similar in many ways, but in a much more compact package and with better dynamic range, so a 6 voice synth could be made pretty compact. This is what kicked off the project.

The system architecture is explained in this block schematic."

Shasta Cults - Configurations - Buchla 700 Release

Shasta Cults - Configurations - Available Sept 13, 2019 Published on Jul 30, 2019

"pre-orders available now via: imprec.com

A ship sinks beneath the silver mirror of the sea-top, temple gongs ring through an empty valley, industrial machinery sputters, heaves, lurches forward, stops, falls apart… These sound events may be the most acute musical referents of Shasta Cults, the music project of Canadian synthesizer technician Richard Smith. Using obsolete electronics, Shasta Cults pursues the true sound of the instrument, freed from the tyranny of emulation, no strings/woodwinds/piano presets. Shasta Cults' compositions seek out unchartered territories where sustained drones may swell, build, or evaporate; where timbres collide, amplitudes fluctuate, sounds emerge, raw, primeval, new hybrids form from the collisions of electricity and frequency. There may be stretches of silence punctuated by bell-ish tones from futures unheard; a sequence of notes may verge upon melody before mutating into ugly moans, the sonic equivalent of funhouse mirrors. But the end result is far more than chance operation, sporadic sound fields, or indeterminate academic exercise. Instead, Shasta Cults brings us back to nature, back to the possibilities inherent in nature, to the truth of evolution, stitching both musical tones, and the sounds of 21st century living into a form which is as real, as imponderable, and as ungovernable as our own memories.

Recorded in 2017, employing the processes of non-linear waveshaping, frequency modulation and feedback, Configurations consists of eight programs captured live to multitrack using a rare, fully functional Buchla 700 digital-hybrid instrument designed in the late 1980s. Whereas previously released works made with the 700 almost always consist in simple manipulations of the single factory preset, this album delves deep into the instrument's rich sonic vocabulary to offer the listener a more elaborate demonstration of the system's capabilities.

Presented here in limited quantities this release is intended as a high fidelity audio archive of this obscure musical artifact."

"THIS SALE IS FOR A VERY RARE INNOVEX HAMMOND CONDOR RSM WIND INSTRUMENT SYNTHESIZER. THIS WAS MADE IN THE 1970s, BUT STILL USED TODAY BY SOME INNOVATIVE ARTIST'S.

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THIS UNIT ORIGINALLY CAME WITH, SO I CAN'T SAY IT'S COMPLETE. BUT, I WILL LIST THE ITEMS INCLUDED WITH THIS SALE.

THE "CONDOR" RSM UNIT. THIS IS A SELF CONTAINED LOCKING UNIT THAT COMES WITH 2 ORIGINAL KEYS.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS.

3 MODIFIED MOUTHPIECES - TRUMPET, CLARINET, & SAXOPHONE. THESE HAVE ALL BEEN MADE TO ACCEPT A SMALL MICROPHONE IN ORDER TO PLAY THROUGH THIS UNIT.

THERE ARE 3 MICROPHONES, SHURE BROTHERS CA20B's, WHICH WERE NOT SOLD TO SHURE DEALERS, ONLY TO HAMMOND FOR THIS UNIT.

HERE'S SOME MORE INFO ON THESE MICS & THIS SYNTH:

The CA20B was manufactured by Shure from 1968 to 1970. The CA20B had a ceramic transducer element with an output level of -73 dB V at 94 dB SPL / One Pascal. It was sold only to the Innovex division of the Hammond Organ Company. The CA20B was not sold to Shure dealers.

The CA20B attached to the mouthpiece of a wind instrument, like a trumpet, clarinet, or sax. A hole was drilled into the side of the mouthpiece. A brass adapter, with an internal rubber O-ring, was threaded into this hole. The CA20B then threaded into this adapter. The unbalanced, high impedance output signal from the CA20B was carried on a 60" cable terminated in a tip/sleeve 1/8" phone plug. The phone plug connected to the Condor RSM Wind Instrument Synthesizer, made by Innovex. The Condor was based on the electronics of the Hammond orgran and could produce a variety of sounds and effects using the wind instrument as the trigger source. Examples of settings on the Condor: Bass Sax, Fuzz, Cello, Oboe, Tremolo, Vibrato, Bassoon, etc. If the player wanted to use the instrument acoustically, the CA20B would be unthreaded from the adapter and replaced by a brass cap that sealed the side hole in the mouthpiece.

The Condor was not a success and Shure made few of the CA20B. Some players continued to use the CA20B as a horn pick up, connecting it to the input of a guitar amp. Other model numbers associated with the CA20B were CA20, CA20A, RD7458, and 98A132B.

THERE ARE ALSO 2 COVERS FOR THE MICROPHONE HOLES ON THE MOUTHPIECES. THEY ARE INTER-CHANGEABLE.

AND 2 SMALL PADDED ENVELOPES TO HOLD YOUR ACCESSORIES.

AS FAR AS TESTING, I ONLY KNOW THAT IT POWERS ON, AS YOU CAN SEE FROM MY PICS. I ALSO GOT A LITTLE REVERB WHEN ATTACHED TO AN EXTERNAL AMP.

THIS IS NOT AN AMPLIFIER! ONE IS REQUIRED TO MAKE THIS FUNCTIONAL."

Individual synthesis based on originally developed phase control and modulation method (Ī±Ī±-Phase Modulation). Driving in High-Resolution (24bit/96kHz) and 6-voice polyphony. Also the alias noise is very low even when extreme modulation is applied. RaspberryPi is used as the platform.

River Synths - Dendrites

Published on Jul 30, 2019 SchneidersLaden

This is the first post to feature River Synths.

"The Dendrites by River Synths is a highly versatile multimode filter with different resonance characteristics and a drive circuit. A very nice colouring audio processing tool, with a certain presence and a musical behaviour."

OVERVIEW
River's Dendrites is a true multi-multi-mode filter. A very nice colouring audio processing tool, with a certain presence and a musical behaviour. The filter modes (16), resonance (3) and overdrive (2) all have different options to choose from - a total of 96 different combinations. And then there are five CV inputs, additional switches, controls and attenuators. The “art” of Dendrites is to never appear overloaded with features, but to always be playable - and to sound very good.

Dendrites is a multimode filter AND phaser. Two of the 16 modes are designed as pure all-pass filters, which can produce a rather deep phaser sound despite being there being only four stages/poles available. Four more modes are a mixture of allpass and lowpass, bandpass and highpass. The remaining ten are one- to four-pole, "pure" variants of LP, BP and HP.

The dry, wood-like basic sound of the discrete transistor circuitry always shines through. By adjusting the input level and the resonance behavior, the Dendrites can be made sharper, softer, thinner, wider, firmer and more fluid. And with the drive activated, it's even quite aggressive.

Each of the three resonance settings plays a role in achieving said characteristics: "Vintage" for soft and round, stronger colouring behaviour. "Q-Comp" regulates the relationship between audio signal and resonance, providing a different presence. And "K-Style" means Korg classics sound and therefore also has a dominant resonance sound and a rather mid centered output.

At the center of Dendrites, however, is a click encoder with which the 16 different filter types can be quickly selected. This is also possible with CV. Also the resonance is CV controllable. AND Dendrites also tracks stable over at least four octaves and can be used as a sine oscillator (with Drive = Waveshaper). With exponential and - for filters rather unusual - linear FM. The FM/Cutoff input is switchable between lin/exp and is bipolar (+/-5V), while its neighbour "Envelope" is designed for unipolar envelopes (0-10V). Both have an attenuator for scaling the input signal.

Especially in the setting "K-Style" it is worthwhile to activate the drive. With the input-gain in the middle position in order to leave some air for the resonance. With vintage resonance on the other hand and especially in 4P-lowpass mode you can and should move the input gain to past 3 o’clock. "Q-Comp" has a different presence that allows for settings moving subtly between 9 to 12 at the input and thus working out different shades of saturation.

Dendrites reminds in many settings of classic synths. But you will also notice that it's a unique, self-designed and modern circuit - especially the way it saturates and how agile it can be with fast modulations ... and with how little background noise there is!

North Coast Synthesis - MSK 007 Leapfrog Filter

Published on Jul 30, 2019 SchneidersLaden

"The Leapfrog follows its own path - the filter architecture is very unusual and powerful. The slope steepness is always at least -61dB per octave - hardly any other module is able to take such a hard grip on incoming audio signals."

Funkstill - Filter Threek 13700

Published on Jul 30, 2019 SchneidersLaden

This is the first post to feature the Funkstill brand.

"Filter Threek is a unique multimode VCF. It combines low-pass, high-pass and / or all-pass stages to process sound. The sound character ranges from beefy to nasal. Colorations reminiscent of a Phaser effect are possible as well. The resonance could be described as very muscular. There are six filter combinations available. Thanks to several inputs and outputs, you have a total of twelve operation modes at hand, though. A very important feature of the Filter Threek: You can crossfade between all the filter modes. A flexible CV routing system guarantees very dynamic results."

ACL - Sinfonion (all ACL patch)

Published on Jul 30, 2019 SchneidersLaden

"ACL's Sinfonion in one of the simplest applications imaginable - here three oscillators are played in different chords and the audio signal is then processed with the Dual State Variable VCF. ACL's QLFO controls the cutoff and resonance of the dual filter. No effects, only different chords selected by hand."

CG Products - Noise VCA

Published on Jul 30, 2019 SchneidersLaden

"The CG Products - Noise VCA. This little module has a lot to offer, you get a nice multimode filter, VCA and noise source - just add an envelope and a VCO and you have a full synth voice. Here we used the CG Products XR22 VCO and an envelope from Maths. At the end of the audio chain there is a little bit of Erbe-Verb. The modules by Christian GĆ¼nther are hand assembled here in Berlin."

Niio - Iotine Core 4

Published on Jul 30, 2019 SchneidersLaden

"The Iotine Core 4 is a fully analog, voltage-controllable audio processor with three differently equipped and combinable channels.

Here we show the unit in combination with an Acidlab Drumatix and the Haken ContinuuMini.

Two signal paths are equipped with a smooth sounding multi-mode filter, an extremely flexible saturator and a low-noise VCA. The difference: Each channel offers a unique combination of seven (!!!) saturation and distortion circuits. The third signal path features a multimode filter and a frequency divider / multiplier with distortion capabilities. Furthermore, there is a HAR envelope and an envelope follower. The modulators can not only influence the cutoff of one or more filters, but are also usable to create compressor and expander / gate effects.

Even though the video already shows a lot of action, the Iotine Core 4 can be much more subtle as well as much more brute if you want it to be. Very very versatile!"

Frequensteiner, WMD PDO and Soundmachines Lightstrips

Published on Jul 30, 2019 SchneidersLaden

Mike Brown's creations live on.

"In this short video we show that with just four modules and a small case it is possible to build an unusual percussion/sequencer box that is played via two Soundmachines LS1 Lightstrips. The Phase Displacement Oscillator gives us the possibility to create something like a repeating four step trigger sequence, when tuned down to LFO territory. These four events then ping the filter. In the end of the video there are also some filter-sweeps by the legendary Livewire Frequensteiner! We have added some effects to the main output."

The Metasonix RK6 -12db low pass tube filter

Published on Jul 30, 2019 SchneidersLaden

"The Metasonix RK6 is a low-pass filter based on a tube-design. In this video we show one of the great strengths of this module - adding warmth to digital oscillators. Our sound source in this example is the E-355 - we send the signal alternately directly into the mixer and through the RK6 and then into the mixer. No other effects are used. Why are we doing this? That's what Phil can explain best:

"Often customers ask me how to add some warmth to a digital signal or sample. I never really had an answer ready, because many devices saturate and distort nicely but lack in delivering on precisely this clichƩ. When it comes down to it, to make it sound warm all the ugly, cold and overexaturated parts of the signal should be eliminated. The beautiful parts should be captured and enhanced. The Metasonix RK6 closes this gap like a hero. Listen to the linked Video below to hear how it forms a round piece of music from of a cold, stiff wavetable sequence. The 2nd part of the video contains pure Metasonix DNA.

Conclusion: It is ugly but closes a crucial gap in your soul."

Rare Mulogix Slave 32 - Wendy Carlos DK Synergy Rack Synth SN WC002 ?

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction, also on Reverb

Update: you can find a link to the schematics and user manual further below.

Only one was previously featured back in 2011 for a MOTM sale posted here. According to the seller: "Supposedly the WC stands for Wendy Carlos but I have never been able to verify it. i even contacted Stoney the creator of the Slave and he thinks I am correct BUT he can not find the records in his attic."

Auction description: "I purchased this Slave in 1998. I was not even aware they existed until reading Mark Vail's book 'Vintage Synthesizers'. I am sure that book is what infected a lot of us with the vintage synth BUG.

This is like a rack mount Synergy with more features. You can control the velocity, pitch, and modulation from any vintage or modern midi controller.

The internal board is marked 002 and the hand written serial number has faded or been accidentally wiped off with a misguided spritz of contact cleaner but it also reads 002. The synth is in overall good, un-abused shape with no bent rack ears etc. It does have some very mild rack rash here and there in the typical places but overall it is very clean.

Novation Releases Over 1,000 Free Artist Patches for Peak and Summit

via Novation:

"To celebrate the launch of Summit, throughout August, September and October, Novation are going to be releasing 1000 presets suitable for both Peak and their new flagship synth from artists including Legowelt, Craig Williams, Lightbath, Hinako Omori, Emily Sprague and Shawn Rudiman, amongst many others.

Give Peak to different people and they will always produce dramatically different sounds.Playing to Peak and Summit’s particular architectural strengths – like the multiple simultaneous synthesis types, analogue filters, VCA and distortion, the high-quality onboard effects, and so on – these patches can be of huge educational value, too, giving you insight and inspiration around the varied approaches to programming Peak and Summit to find your own sounds.

Ultimately, these 1000 artist presets comprise a vast and diverse library of basses, leads, pads, arps, FX and more that showcases the synth itself, as well as the skill and talent of some incredible sound designers – and they’re free.

At the same time, Novation have also completely redesigned the Components application from the ground up, so that you can really take advantage of the librarian and the variety of presets offered by all these inspiring artists.

The new Components browser puts the Bank Editor and content side by side, and enables content to be dragged directly into the Bank Editor patch list. Presets can also be filtered in the browser, and you now have the option of showing the Novation and User banks together. Mandatory login is no longer a requirement, either, as you can now use site-wide features without logging in (although you do still need to make an account and log in to store user content in the cloud).

1000 artist presets for Peak and Summit will be released in weekly sets via the new-look Components between the end of July and the end of October."

Gristling Throb - Solo Novation Summit going through its Bi-Timbral Paces - Multi patch -CALC- Jam

Published on Jul 29, 2019 -CALC-

"I was lucky enough to get a handful of my multi patches alongside the other amazing presets for the Novation Summit and this came up while jamming on one of them.

I called this patch "Gristling Throb" for no reason other than I found the name funny and this kind of throbs in a gristling way (and I dont even know what that means). You know.... like you do when naming presets.

Part A is a strange and quite wild self generative patch with heavy use of FMing Osc 3 (set to a wavetable) into Osc 1 and the filter.

Part B is where the music is happening and it was simply a few chords strung together that I liked the sound of.
This is all played all live and it was one of those "in the moment" kind of things half way through an extended jam. But luckily the camera was rolling.

A lot of soundscaping is done with the Mod wheel and the Animate switches on Part B.
This is Summit only, once again the rest of the gear is sitting quite dormant, this was the part of the jam when no clock was running and free play was the order of the day."
