Drawing with Sound (Oscilloscope Music) - Smarter Every Day 224

Published on Aug 31, 2019 Drawing with Sound (Oscilloscope Music) - Smarter Every Day 224

"What I really like about this project is that it taught me to think about the world differently with respect to physical objects. I now sometimes think about the outline of physical objects as if it's a line. The specific area of math that you use for things like this is called 'Parametric Equations'. I had a lot of great conversations about this stuff with Hansi and Jerobeam. I was very impressed by their intelligence, and also very thankful that they took their time to share these special things with me. I know they'd really appreciate it if you'd reach out to their website and purchase OsciStudio as well as some of Jerobeam's music. Even if you don't have an oscilloscope, purchasing the software will obviously help them continue to do what they love doing. Hansi showed me a very interesting thing he's working on involving ray tracing. It was fascinating.

MU - Dark Dream

Published on Aug 17, 2019 Precarious333 Music

"Stressful dream. Dark presence. Infinite dimly lit corridors. What does it mean?

Recorded as 4 tracks into Ableton Live 8. EQ, compression, panning and effects added in post.

Patch Notes:

BASS - Q106A saw wave and Corsynth C104 soft clipped saw sequenced by SymplSEQ 1 into Q105 low pass modulated by C106 channel B and AD ENV. C104 starts out static with no CV to pitch until 45 seconds in.

CHIME - Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas Magnus controlled by a second SymplSEQ.

MELODIC - Noise Engineering Ataraxic Iteritas Magnus through Q107A low pass filer modulated by AD ENV. Also sequenced by the second SymplSEQ. I love the Noise on this module. Not standard noise but adds instability to the pitch. It's a really nice effect.

GATED - Same Noise Engineering Ataraxic Iteritas Magnus but through Q107A high pass filer into Oakley Deep Equinox modulated by C106 A-B Out then VCA gated 16th notes.

The MELODIC and GATED components coming from the same source and running through the same multimode filter are balanced by the filter frequency knob with GATED high pass fading at high frequency settings and MELODIC fading as the low pass filter closes.

TIMING - MIDI to clock pulse supplied by Buchla 225e syncing Oakley LFO multed to SymplSEQ 1 and CGS01 Sub Oscillator acting as a clock divider/gate mixer creating the odd cadence of SymplSEQ 2. Irregular gate pattern from SymplSEQ 1 triggering an ENV and channel A of C106. Irregular trigger pattern from SymplSEQ 2 runs to sync of the other Oakley LFO re-triggering the cycle. This allows me to control the gate length by using the square out of the LFO at low rate and adjusting the pulse width adding sustain time to the ENV and NE BIM it triggers. The sine out of this LFO modulates wave shape on NE AIM."

NOVATION PEAK - Unboxing, Overview & Sounds - Synth Demo

Published on Aug 31, 2019 synth4ever

"Novation Peak unboxing, overview/review and sounds & patches. This Novation Peak demo covers various features of the Novation Peak synth, sound design possibilities and a few patches and presets.

The Novation Peak is an 8-voice polyphonic digital/analog hybrid synthesizer featuring digital oscillators + analog filters and VCAs. The Novation Peak's "New Oxford" FPGA-based oscillators run at 24 MHz to avoid typical sample rate limitations of sample and DSP oscillator designs.

The Novation Peak features 3 oscillators (each with sine, triangle, sawtooth and pulse waveforms) and 43 wavetables. Each oscillator also can be have sync or linear FM, and there is a ring modulator and noise as well.

There are 3 envelopes and 4 LFOs on the Peak. The LFOs have triangle, sawtooth, square and Sample & Hold waveforms. The resonant filter is a multimode OTA design with lowpass, bandpass and highpass settings and can be 12dB or 24dB slope. It also features pre and post filter drive amounts.

The Novation Peak effects section contains analog distortion, 3 types of chorus, delay and 3 types of reverb. All effects can also be modulated in a 4-slot FX mod matrix and configured in parallel or serial routing signal chains. There is also a traditional modulation matrix with 16 slots, each slot having 2 sources per destination.

In addition, the Novation Peak has an arpeggiator with 7 modes, 33 patterns, and adjustable gate length. The Peak also includes various functions such as drift, diverge, unison mode, unison detune, Animate buttons to enable temporary sound changes, and more.

The Novation Peak is a powerful and versatile digital/analog hybrid synth for the modern era with great effects and modulation capabilities. It excels at not only traditional analog sounds, but also vast ambient soundscapes, cutting leads, powerful basses, textures and sound effects. The Peak is a fantastic instrument for those who enjoy experimentation and bread n' butter sounds, and fuses digital and analog technology into a single powerful synth.

Big Synth News Coming From Behringer (& KORG's Hiroaki Nishijima)?

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

Per the description: "I am in beutiful Japan together with Luigi Scarano, our Synthesizer Innovation leader.

Stay tune from some big news - and i mean BIG news.

Uli"

Note who looks like KORG's Hiroaki Nishijima in the back left. I thought that might be Korg's Fumio Mieda on the right, but I'm not sure. You can find a pic and interview with Hiroaki Nishijima and Fumio Mieda here. Some of the other faces look familiar as well, especially the gentleman on the front left. If you can ID them, please comment.

Could this be the Behringer DS80 / CS80, a partnership with KORG, or other?

Behringer meeting with any representatives of another large scale synth company is a big deal. It will be interesting to find out what this is all about.

You can find an interview with Luigi Scarno here.

Update: Announcement below with a new pic, also in via Soviet Space Child. It looks like Hiroaki Nishijima is indeed joining Behringer.

“Synthesizer Icon Hiroaki Nishijima to Lead Behringer’s New Synthesizer Innovation Center in Japan

Behringer announced today that Hiroaki Nishijima, synthesizer icon and inventor of the famous Korg MS-20 Synthesizer, will lead Behringer’s new high-tech innovation center in its Tokyo headquarter.

Behringer’s vision is to build a large research and development center and invite many talented Japanese engineers to focus on flagship synthesizers, samplers and other innovative product designs.

About Hiroaki Nishijima

“Ever since I was a child, I was always excited to disassemble toys and explore how they work. My father and grandfather helped nurture that side of me by teaching me electronics and how to solder while attending third year of elementary school.

During that time, I got into music. I started playing with my brother’s classical guitar and eventually got lessons from an actual classical guitar teacher. I continued to play and improve until I noticed I was becoming better at it than my brother.

As my skills grew more diverse, so did my taste in music. Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Genesis, ELP and I Pooh became my inspirations. In junior high school, I bought an electric guitar and formed a band. That’s when I saw a synthesizer for the first time. It was amazing and I wanted one for myself, but it was just too expensive for a student like me.

When I entered university, I studied electronic engineering and played in a band. While that was going on, I’d also repair my friends’ amps and would design effects on the side. After graduation, I joined Korg to develop synthesizers like the MS-20 series, Sigma, KES and PME-40X series, Z3 and even Korg’s component modeling technology.

Over the past few years I have watched Behringer deliver high-quality synthesizers and pursue a very strong mission to deliver impressive instruments to musicians around the world. I reached out to Uli Behringer because I wanted to be part of his mission and help Behringer design world-class musical instruments. This is my dream, too.

These days, it’s difficult for current Japanese companies to create the types of synths that I used to develop. This is why I joined Behringer because my ambition to create professional analog synthesizers coincides with Uli Behringer’s love of musical instruments and with that I’m very excited to see what we can dream up.

I am currently looking for experienced embedded software leaders and engineers for our new Innovation center in Tokyo. Please can contact us at yuka.ishigami@musictribe.com.”

About Music Tribe

Uli Behringer, Founder of Behringer and Music Tribe commented: “I am extremely proud to have Nishijima San on our team. This man is a legendary synth icon with decades of experience.
Ever since I designed my own synthesizer in 1977, I have always been obsessed with synthesizers and today, Behringer is on a mission to bring back classic synthesizers as well as design completely new instruments and make them available at prices everyone can afford. We at Behringer believe that everyone should have access to the amazing synthesizers and sounds of the 70’s and 80’s.”

Uli continues: “We are currently recruiting experienced synthesizer engineers from all over the world to join us in our synthesizer mission. People interested can directly contact me at uli.behringer@musictribe.com.”

SDS Digital Sequarallel 8HP MIDI2CV Sequencer Module!

Published on Aug 30, 2019 freshnelly

"Well, I'm at it again! I have long wanted a decent sequencer that uses recorded to MIDI to make sequences for modular without a computer.

It started out as a simple MIDI2CV but then my trademark "what if..." kicked in and here we are. I just had to show it off a little.

This video is rather hap-hazard and was just testing a couple of functions, Bar looping and Transposing.

In FL Studio I made a 16 bar test sequence with changes every couple of bars from 1 channel to 2, then 3 & 4 channels (and very different parts although stuck with the same key) to test the various CV-MIDI Channel modes and note-order selection (Time, Range, Cycle). That was mentioned to explain why the instruments and cadence changes so much from one bar to another.

There was also 3 program changes on channel 1, and a couple of percussion sequences.

There is only 1 VCO hooked on Gate/CV 3 here but it's pretty funky with all 4! It plays certain notes when in certain channel/order modes as you can hear in the video.

In percussion mode, where up to 12 triggers are brought to the panel, the display changes to visualize that. Note numbers are in each percussion box. Eventually the fixed notes can be set to automatically assign Jacks as they come in.

The really cool thing about this module is that the sequences are played internally, under modular clock control, just as they were recorded. So some channels may be recorded that, if not blocked, can come out of the MIDI jack, plus play when a different Channel Mode is selected (1+1+1+1, 3+1, 2+2, All 4)

This sequence has no loop points (Note#121) in the sequence or manually assigned Loop/JumpTo points so looping just defaults to inside the present bar. Even this was a lot of fun though!

This sequence took about 1% of the memory so I think it would be possible to get near 100 sequences in there.

It's a powerful little module and has been a bit of work over the past couple of weeks but now seeing results."

John Bowen SOLARIS Demo of tweaking, sound design and some patches

Published on Aug 30, 2019 synthlegends

"The John Bowen Synth Design SOLARIS is almost 8 years on the market. Since 2012 there were approximately 380 units produced. The 7th production run just finished and is sold out.

The SOLARIS is a very sophisticated digital virtual analog synthesizer with 4 oscillators, 2 so called rotors, tons of waveforms, filters, mixer routing possibilities, 5 LFO and 6 envelopes. It contains about 1200 parameter and countless routing possibilities. It is like a polyphonic modular synthesizer which is capable to recreate all classic vintage synthesizers and also never heard digital stuff. With the SOLARIS a programmers dream became true. The GUI is quite logical thanks to 5 text displays for each section in the signal path plus a big graphic display.

My new purchased SOLARIS with Serial Number 356 has a new hardware feature, OLED Text Displays. In the meanwhile the OS is "grown up" and there are also more than 2000 user presets programmed by a big community of sound designers.

In this video I only scratch on the surface. In the beginning I want to demonstrate a bit the different sections (oscillator, filter, envelops, LFO) by tweaking an anlog sounding JUPITER style Pad. Then I demonstrate a couple of typical analog leads, bass, sync sounds and some digital sounds to show the wavetable section. In the end I play a gorgeous string patch demonstrating some further routing capabilities in the mixer section, where you can layer 4 parts.

I did not use any additional effects, mastering, compression or eq. You hear only the SOLARIS from Out 1 and 2 directly to the audio interface.

I hope, you enjoy this video, which only shows a very little part of this unbelievable flexible synth. I am very happy to read your comments.

Cheers, Rüdiger"

184 cyclotron found by Hainbach

"In May 2019, a Berlin-based, classically-trained symphony composer with a fondness for converting old scientific gear into musical instruments posted to a discussion forum: 'Any nuclear scientists here? 184[-inch] cyclotron question.'

In a single photo, he presented a mystery: His latest find was a ’70s-era piece of equipment labeled a 'LOCK-IN AMPLIFIER' featuring analogue displays, four dials of varying sizes, and a neat blue sticker label reading '184' CLYCLOTRON, BLDG. 80, RM. 121, EXT. 5467.” Could anyone help him find the story behind it?

Stefan Paul Goetsch, who uses the name Hainbach when creating electronic music, posted the plea hoping the equipment might be traceable via the label. He had no idea that blue sticker would provide a clear connection to a major piece of scientific history..."

The sound quality is full, rich and powerful when recorded in external midi and organically raw when recorded in audio ideal for various recording techniques and other options. (Also has AU/Vst intergration for beginners)

The filter envelopes are deep with a quick attack and the unit has an array of built in effects which can give out very satisfying results either through analogue or digital using different waveform structures

'Take on Me' by it's catchy almost arpeggio-like way of playing, along with the staccato DX synth bass, 'Save a Prayer' by utilizing the pitch bend wheel in a new way as well as the different keys the chords take throughout the song. Axel F for simplicity yet intoxicating main hook and bass, 'New Song' for the way Mr. HJ so effortlessy managed several synths at the same time, yet playing that catchy riff. 'Light my Fire' by sheer awesomeness in the outragious use of different keys and chords in that short amount of time the solo lasts. 'Deep Red' by its use of different time signatures and the way is so hypnotizing together with the visuals of the movie. Lastly 'Toccata and Fugue in Dm', pure madness and every note just adds to the madness. I've taken insoiration from this piece for years and many of my songs have snippets of that in it, in different ways."

Percussa SSP Updated with New Step Sequencer, MIDI Sync & Other Optimizations

via Percussa Updates on Kicstarter:

Update 25082019 [New VCA/Mixer; New step sequencer; New MIDI sync features; various fixes and optimizations]

Time for another major update - In this one a new VCA module inspired by the Doepfer A-135 module, lots of improvements to the step sequencer and MIDI module, and a variety of bugfixes.

New VCA Module

The new quad-VCA module can be used as a VCA or mixer. Each VCA takes an audio input (A) and a control input (C), and the control signal is used to scale the audio signal. Both the audio and control inputs have attenuation parameters. There is also a gain parameter per VCA, and each VCA has an individual output. Besides that there is also a SUM output which is the sum of all 4 VCA outputs, which allows you to use the VCA as a mixer.

Here is how the VCA works internally - the Gain level is applied to the audio input, post-attenuation. The control signal is applied on top of the Gain level, post-attenuation. The sum of the gain level and applied control signal is clipped to the maximum signal amplitude.

Step Sequencer

We’ve done a massive update to the step sequencer module - we’ve added a playback window, with a start position (from). The pattern length parameter controls the length of the playback window and you can move the playback window anywhere in the 64-step pattern using the from parameter. You also can control the direction of playback using the new Dir input and there are special inputs to be used with the new MIDI clock/start/stop/continue signals of the MIDI module (see below). Besides all this you have a modulation input for controlling playback position in the playback window, and one to control the current pattern number.

We’ve also added an info-bar at the top of the sequence to show current tempo of the internal clock, tempo after applying division factor for the clock, current pattern number, playback window length and current step and step value.

We upgraded the step sequencer from 3 modulation inputs to 14 inputs, and here is a list of all the new inputs and what they do -

StLen - controls length of the gate signals output from the step sequencer

Tem - tempo of the internal clock

Clock - clock input, moves the playback head one step forward/backward

Begin - trigger input to set the playback head to the first step of the playback window

End - trigger input to set the playback head to the last step of the playback window

Pos - controls playback head position in the playback window

P - controls current pattern number

PLen - controls length of playback window

DivF - controls division factor applied to internal clock tempo

From - controls start of playback window in 64-step sequence

Dir - controls direction of playback. Positive signal advances sequence forward, negative advances the sequence backwards

Start - trigger input to enable the internal clock

Stop - trigger input to disable the internal clock

DivIn - clock division input, used with an internal clock from which you want to derive the tempo and possibly divide after deriving the tempo (for example a MIDI clock signal)

For some inputs there are corresponding parameters in the step sequencer. As always, parameter values and incoming modulation signals are summed together (i.e. modulation signal is applied on top of parameter value, so you get modulation around the parameter value).

The Start, Stop, Begin, End and DivIn inputs can be used to sync the sequencer to MIDI clock, start, stop and continue signals.

To sync the sequencer to a MIDI clock signal, you feed it into the DivIn input, and then set the DivF parameter to 1.5 (the reason for doing this, is that MIDI clock is 24 pulses per quarter note, while our sequencer has 16 steps per quarter note).

If you want to make sure the sequence starts in sync with your external DAW or sequencer, you can send the MIDI Start/Stop to the Start/Stop inputs of the sequencer. You will also want to send the Stop signal to the End input of the sequencer, such that when your external sequencer stops, it moves the playback head to the last step of the sequence on the SSP, ready to move onto the first step in the sequence on the first MIDI clock pulse. Optionally you might want to send the Continue signal to the Start input of the sequencer as well such that if you move the playback head in your DAW, and press start again, it will enable the clock in the SSP’s step sequencer.

The MIDI sync button has been removed from the Step Sequencer since you can control this now by feeding MIDI clock/start/stop/continue into the sequencer as you wish.

The step sequencer also outputs its internal clock, after division using the division factor (DivF). The DivF parameter has been changed to support fractional values.

The Restart toggle button has been renamed Begin to correspond to the above Begin input. The playback head has been changed so it’s more visible in the sequence.

Updates to the MIDI module for MIDI Clock Sync

The MIDI module has 4 new modulation outputs -

Clock - this is the MIDI clock signal which can be fed into the DivIn input of the step sequencer.

Start - start signal which can be used with start input of sequencer

Stop - stop signal which can be used with stop and end input of sequencer, etc

Continue - continue signal which can be used with start input of sequencer

Of course the signals can be used in any way you want and with any module you want, internally in the SSP or externally, for example to control other sequencers or modules in your rack.

Using the multichannel audio/cv streaming over USB, you can even send the signals to your DAW, and your DAW can function as the MIDI clock source (for example, connect a USB MIDI interface to the SSP’s host port, then connect this interface via MIDI cables to your computer’s MIDI interface, to receive the MIDI clock).

DSP Loop and MIDI Input processing Optimizations

Various under-the-hood optimizations for signal and MIDI processing were carried out.

Pitch Input fixes for all modules

There was a bug in the pitch inputs, where setting the coarse/fine frequency setting on modules would change the tuning of the modules, rather than just applying a pitch offset. Besides that I wanted to get rid of the requirement to set coarse/fine to zero on oscillators, when using the pitch inputs.

As a result, I changed the code such that it does no longer matter to what value you set coarse/fine in the oscillators, and the tuning will not change when you change the value. The coarse/fine parameters now simply apply a pitch offset and the pitch inputs continue to track correctly regardless of the coarse/fine value. It’s also no longer necessary to set coarse/fine to zero for any of the modules, to track correctly.

This means that on the patches in the preset collection, you have to change the coarse/fine setting on the modules to something sensible, like 440Hz, instead of setting these settings to zero.

If you want the pitches to match external oscillators, simply change the coarse/fine value until the oscillator has the same pitch as your external oscillator, for the same pitch signal coming in (or change your external oscillator’s frequency to match that of the modules in the SSP).

MIDI and MTQ modules received corresponding fixes so they work out of the box with the changes to the pitch inputs.

Source/Dest fix in Bus Module

There was a bug with Source/Destination parameters in the Bus module jumping all over the place. This has been fixed.

Conclusion

That’s it for this update. We hope you enjoy the hard work we put into this one and look forward to the next one.

B&C"
