Teenage Engineering Eurorack, POM-400 Matrix Kits & Talking to Aliens with a Steiner Masters Touch

Talking to Aliens video upload by Dave Vondle

This is a bit of a triple post. Dave Vondle of http://matrix.vondle.com wrote in to let me know the final 9 units of the Ghielmetti Pin Matrix Kit for the Teenage Engineering POM-400, previously posted here, have been completed. It's featured in the video above and in a post by Teenage Engineering on converting their Pocket Operator Modules (POM) to eurorack.

That said, first the description for the video above:

"Figured out how to communicate to extraterrestrial organisms.

The Calmset 3 connected to my brain is generating the frequencies - and the Masters Touch is taking breath, bite, and touch into the Teenage Engineering POM-400 (with my matrix kit attached). Breath controls the amplitude and bite/touch modify filter parameters. This all runs through the VOCU tape echo."

See here for some additional posts featuring the Masters Touch including pics. You can also find some info on Patchman Music here.

Second, info on the final batch of Matrix Kits from http://matrix.vondle.com:

"Over a year ago I created a bolt-on kit to turn a Teenage Engineering Pocket Modular 400 into a matrix synth like the EMS Synthi. Instead of using cables to patch outputs from one module into inputs of another, you use the supplied pins to connect a row (output) to the corresponding column (input).

I have completed the final batch of 9 kits, as the manufacturer of the matrices recently went out of business. Teenage engineering just wrote a blog post featuring the kit, so I figured it would be a good time to get these last kits out there.

More info about the kit:

The matrix itself was made in Switzerland by the established patchbay company, Ghielmetti, and the kit simply bolts onto the back of the POM-400 modules with the supplied hardware - there is no soldering required. Once bolted on, it enables you to make 100% of all the patches you could otherwise make using cables, with the added benefit of having virtually no restrictions on the number of available outputs and inputs for each module. Patch cables can still be used in conjunction with the matrix for interfacing the system with external modules and running sound out from the device.

I thought you folks might be interested! For more details and to place an order go to matrix.vondle.com

Bonus Video - Here’s me when I patched a Steiner Master’s Voice into the POM-400, with the kit installed:" [above]

Third: eurorack conversions for Teenage Engineering's Pocket Operator Modules (and euro racking Pocket Operators):

via Teenage Engineering: eurorack is a very common system format when it comes to modular synths. there are tons of modules and manufacturers on the market and the pocket operator modular series is eurorack compatible. this means any POM system can be used together with any other module, from any other brand. while the pocket rack format is slightly smaller than eurorack, you only need some minor tweaks to fit your pocket operator modules in your eurorack system.

here are a few ways to 'eurorackify' your pocket operator modulars and pocket operators, plus a bonus mod to really expand the capabilities of your POM-400.

eurorack front panels for POM
the two companies malm.audio and jklmnt have joined forces and created custom eurorack front panels for the complete range of modules available in the pocket operator modular POM-400 and POM-170. pick your favorite module and mount that in your existing eurorack system, or create a complete replica of an entire system. the various panels range from 6 hp width, up to 18 hp.

power adapters
they've also made a convenient power adapter that easily converts the power connector from pocket rack to eurorack. no soldering is required and everything above is available through the oddvolt webstore.

pokit for POM-16 by grayscale
the company grayscale makes modules and stylish eurorack front panels for a lot of products. their pokit is a eurorack conversion kit for the POM-16 keyboard. the front panel has a matte black finish and is 42 hp wide. the kit even comes with matching gray official knobs. this is a great option for enabling your system with the 4-channel sequencer, arpeggiator and keyboard that is the POM-16.

pocket operators and eurorack
the usually hand-held regular pocket operators can also be used in a eurorack system. this could for instance be a great way to create a portable and powerful grab-and-go live performance instrument, or to have pocket operators tightly and neatly integrated into your studio setup. here are two examples of how to mount pocket operators in a eurorack case.

Meet the Break Glass Benjozeit - a Benjolin and Zeitgeist Combined

video upload by NOISEBUG

"Here is a short demo something a long time in the making. This is the BenjoZeit, a licensed copy of Rob Hordijk’s beloved DIY workshop circuits released to the public over a decade ago. The Break Glass BenjoZeit contains both the Benjolin and Zeitgeist circuits, true to form, warts and all. The finished limited edition of 5 are simply beautiful and 2 years in the making. Commissioned before the onset of the events of early 2020, these have finally met us 2 years later.

There will not be a second run as these were handmade to the extreme in a beautifully spacious tabletop format.

Available now on Noisebug.net for a limited time."

"A high water mark for glassine pads, premier brass stabs, and surprisingly present basses, the Roland Juno 106 is well deserving of it's status as a classic synthesizer. All voices have been refurbished, this is a fully working specimen, with all sliders and pots cleaned and working wonderfully.

This model was a Japanese market 100v unit. We performed the following actions for smooth North America operation...

-Replaced hard wired 100vac plug with IEC Jack and chassis grounded.
-Replaced original 100vac transformer with new 120vac transformer.
-Replaced original battery with socket for cr3032 and new battery.

Very good condition overall, includes hard case as photo'd.

The CS-50 is the 4 voice version of the legendary CS-80, it uses the exact same circuitry as its larger brothers and sounds identical. This particular instrument has just undergone complete restoration including:

- all new electrolytic and tantalum capacitors
- power supply refurb
- all voices tested
- all controls cleaned and lubricated
- all hardware tightened
- control panel and knobs cleaned
- all CMOS devices replaced
- burn in and full calibration"

"As you can see from the second picture there is a little Bend to the left side of the rack. You could bend it back. There are a few scratches on the unit including one on the top and it stands out more due to the silver medal underneath the black paint, a black permanent marker would make it less visible. It is missing one of the knobs. As for the functioning everything seems to turn."

Demo ONE - Deep Techno & Electronica - Circuit Rhythm Sample Pack by A Force Truly Evil

video upload by Isotonik Studios

"Deep Techno & Electronica is a truly dark, deep and introspective musical force, full of structure and style. Robotic, mechanical and soulful, always looking to the future.

The sound of Deep Techno & Electronica saturated with tape delays, heavy reverbs, ice cold atmospheres, and a strong Dub Techno influence.

DEEP TECHNO & ELECTRONICA CONTENT

64 drum and percussion sounds that cover the territory you'd expect, deep kicks and techy snare drums, classic analog drum machine sounds, 909 and 808 clones, plus a selection of electronic and acoustic percussion.

A selection of 32 synth waveforms

to turn Circuit Rhythm into a synthesiser. With shaping tools like filters, envelope slope and distortion we can obtain multiple variations of each wave. Raw sonic material like basic sawtooth, sine waves and pulses, sub basses, hard-edged digital sounds, along with more complex waveforms like atmospheres, pads, textures and synth chords.

In short, a well balanced sonic arsenal for anyone working in any genre of Techno or electronic music territory.

8 One shot bass samples.

16 One shot Dub chords.

8 Loop samples: Four drum loops and four synth loops. All can be adjusted for pitch and tempo using the slice function. Loops can be sliced and diced to use individual notes or isolated drum hits, or to have multiple instruments in a single track.

32 high quality sessions/project covering from the organic and precise patterns of Deep Techno to the darkest and most atmospheric Dub, passing through the roots and impulses of Detroit to end up in evolutionary and minimalist electronica.

Some sessions include several scenes.

Custom grid effects template for dynamic pattern variations.

All samples except loops are in the key of C.

Wav files are provided so that you can use the samples with your favourite DAW.

Sequential Prophet-6 Sound Pack - All FM sounds

video upload by Shahruz Moshtael

"Sound pack of 50 patches with sequences for the excellent Sequential Prophet-6 analog synthesizer. All of these patches use Oscillator 2 as an audio rate modulation source via the Poly Mod section. FM on this synth is a big part of what makes it exciting for me and I hope these patches help you see it in a fresh way.

Sounds load into slots 200-249 as default. Everything heard here is totally dry, with no eq or compression. Just the sequences with the occasional use of aftertouch or tweaking the filter cutoff.

Note these patches use the latest firmware with the 'Vintage Knob' functionality.

"The ARP 2500 was made famous for sounds it created with its 1047 Voltage Controlled Filter. You can now add that rich, incredible sound to your MU modular synthesizer with the M401 Multimode Filter Resonator from Lower West Side Studio.

The M401 Multimode Filter Resonator is the Lower West Side Studio adaptation of the ARP 1047 filter. The 1047 filter is what gave the ARP 2500 its legendary sound. The M401 Multimode Filter Resonator features;

Simultaneous filter outputs including LowPass, Highpass, Bandpass and a Variable Frequency output The Bandpass output has a gentle 6 decibels/octave slope on either side of its voltage-controllable “corner” frequency, making it ideal for replicating acoustic resonators. At the other extreme, it can be set to a very high “Q” or feedback, allowing only a very narrow band of frequencies to get through.

The M401 can act as a percussion module with a dedicated input for a gate or trigger signals to “ring” its filter with adjustable decay.

The M401 also offers features not available on the original ARP VCF including adaptive AGC input that reacts to input amplitude and settings and adaptive TRIG input that guarantees a full trigger pulse at all frequency settings"

Here is an interview with Dakota Melin, the designer of the M401 Multimode Filter Resonator:

Moog Minitaur: first encounter

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

Thanks for watching!
Wanted to see what this little synth is capable of, for being probably one of the more affordable Moog products, does it compare in sound quality to some more expensive and more complex Moog synthesizers? I will let you be the judge. All you need to be aware of is that my final signal is coming out through the audio output of the synth, and into UAD Twin, then I am using Valhalla Shimmer for reverb and some EQ on the master chain. If you have any questions type it in the comments."

Turning a Nanokontrol into a 16 step multitrack midi looper using a Raspberry PI Zero 2

video upload by Floyd Steinberg

"I turned my Nanokontrol into a 16 step multitrack midi looper using a Raspberry PI Zero 2, using WebMidi on Chromium. This is still work in progress, but I was so happy this works I wanted to share it online. ;-)
Hardware used:
PEAK - for the saw wave patch
Orba - Drums
Reface DX - Lead
PI - sequencer

How it works:
The Nanokontrol has 24 buttons, 16 of them are used as "locks" for the 16 steps in a measure. Pressing a key and turning the left knob "locks" a note in place (a midi keyboard can be used, too). Pressing a button and turning the second knob will adjust note length. The right knob will adjust the tempo of the track.

As this is a web app, all the MIDI stuff is "stored" as a DOM element. Each track is represented by an ordered list that's formatted to look like a table. Velocity, note length and pitch are then stored as data parameters.
There's a web worker running in the background which will provide the time, unaffected by what's going on on the web page. That thread will just count up to 16 in the interval deducted from the BPM and then start from the beginning. Each step, the thread sends a signal to the web page to read the next item in the list and send it to the hardware assigned to that track.

To Do:
- performance optimization for PI Zero (it runs pretty stable on anything else ;-)
- SWING :-)
- midi learning for any given controller
- loading and saving tracks as midi file
- on the fly creation of new patterns, copying the one currently played so you can tweak it
- on the fly pattern switching
- track muting

Once this is done, I'll release it for you to use. :-)"

LXR-02 tutorial - Part 7: Fun with LFOs

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Part seven of a getting started guide for the Erica Synths LXR-02 drum machine. This is with firmware 1.2. This tutorial looks at applying multiple synchronized LFOs to a sound. You'd think a 17-minute tutorial could cover a big chunk of this topic, but instead it really only covers the more obvious options of modulating the pitch, filter, resonance and decay. There are dozens of other targets that can produce some extremely interesting and unusual sounds. At least this will get you started. Be warned though, it's a deep tunnel to explore! With six LFOs the LXR-02 can get very intricate very quickly.

As an aside: A non-synth friend who discovered me working on this video asked what it was about. When I tried to give a quick overview they thought it was hilarious. In the nicest way possible they dismissed it as 'incredibly niche'.

Some people just don't appreciate how much fun you can have with low frequency oscillators - but I know you understand.

I had long wanted to start these precious machines in search of new sounds. My friend Achim Zepezauer gave me an analogous sequencer. This sends data via midi but also by "control voltage" (C.V.). There are no computers in this project. Finding someone as open as Miroslava Stareychinska on the harp was essential to be able to merge the acoustic world with the analog. Finally, the support of the cultural foundation "Hessische Kultur Stiftung" made this project possible.

Sonicware Liven Bass & Beats Prototype Demo 1 - Big Wubs

video upload by ChrisLody

"So here's my first quick jam made using the new Sonicware Bass & Beats. This arrived on Tuesday and I've been tasked with creating wavetables and preset sounds for it which is what you're hearing here. There's a lot to learn that I have yet to look at, plus from what I can gather the text on the silk isn't final yet so I think this is a prototype.

The monophonic bass engine of the B&B features dual wavetable oscillators, a sub oscillator and a noise source. The structure is semi modular with velocity, 2 assignable knobs, 2 LFO's and 3 ADSR envelopes that can be freely assigned. It's possible to have LFO's affect each others speed for example. User wavetable import is possible and it uses the same format as the Serum VST, 256x 2048 samples so nice and high in quality. There is a filter with low-pass, high-pass and band-pass modes that has overdrive, plus waveshaping modes which can all be controlled using the modulation sources.

I'm sure the drum part of the B&B is also very powerful but I've not had much chance to learn how to use that yet 😄"

After Later Audio Talks Dirty Laundry and Developing Eurorack Modules

video upload by Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video Nick Bigelow of Patchwerks sits down with Lenny Helton of After Later Audio to discuss Eurorack development and one of their newest modules, Dirty Laundry.

Dirty Laundry is a destructive harmonic generator. The FOLD side can function as a standard Buchla-inspired wave folder but then extend into chaos when you engage the “pre-fold” PRESS section. The Press section creates all kinds of initial harmonics that really give the Fold section something to sink its teeth into. This results in a nice range of controlled harmonics from simple fold activity to anarchy.

The Press and Fold sections can function either as two parallel sections or as single serial unit. There are crossfaders between the sections and at the end of chain to help with blending between these two distinct sections. In development I mainly use it as a serial unit as I think it’s most fun that way. But I found the need to control the mixes to get what I was after, so I added some extra patch points to make it parallel capable.

The module will work well with all waveforms (speech is fun) but I often stick with sine and triangle waves as I find them the most pleasing starting point. While most folders won’t work well with square waves, the RES/DRIVE circuit will cause some rippling and make the FOLD much more interesting.

Waldorf M Gets a MicrowaveII/XT Style Digital Filter

via Waldorf

"New M firmware version with a new digital filter. Well, the last version did not last very long. There's another new M firmware update available and this one comes packed with a new digital filter (similar to the one used in the Micro Wave II). Beside the new filter feature the new firmware also comes with bug fixes and if you missed it of course with the great new features from the last update: Fast loading of presets, "Ghost in the machine" randomize feature for instant new presets or as an inspiration source."
via the Release notes:

"Technically speaking, this is an adaptation of Dattaro-Chamberlin SVF (which is similar to MWII implementation of LP12/BP12/HP12 VCF modes).

However, it is NOT a direct clone of such MWII filters into M.

So, what we have here as DigiVCF. This is actually LP/BP/HP SVF with 12 dB / oct slope, with resonance, and without self-oscillation. It stays directly between Mixer output and analog VCF, i.e. this is the last digital element of M's sound path. It can be enabled/disabled, and cutoff frequency could be modulated through one modulator. On the full resonance, it's attenuate a signal at 12 dB, and with an ASIC bug enabled, it could be overdriven up to clipping. Without ASIC bug it should not be overdriven. The cutoff is within the range 10Hz - 10kHz. This was made intentionally meaning to fit into the Classic OSC Mode performance. However, it passed the M character well. This is an experimental, non-planned feature, but allows to advance the sonic possibilities of the M a bit more.

It could be found on the MIX section of UI, pages 4 and 5. The graphics were not implemented in this release. Honestly, I need feedback about this feature generally.

FW : Host 1.06 RC
- fixed the voice stealing bug in Multi-Mode (broken round-robin).
- fixed mono retrig allocator mode.
- fixed mono legato allocator mode, changed to duophonic legato (allows trill, but does not track more than one previously pressed key)
- fixed bug with loading sound if it contains two different user wavetables.
- added DigiVCF sound parameters.
- added DigiVCF UI pages.
- added DigiVCF support for existing patches."
