"This Juno-106 looks, feels and sounds like it rolled off the factory line last week. As you can see from the pictures it is in mint condition with no scratches or fading of any button or keys. There is one small hairline crack on the end of one of the plastic side panels, (very minor, illustrated in picture). Everything is original and functions like new. Recently had all of the original 80017A voice chips restored, calibrated and sockets installed on all (6) chips. All work was performed by (synthspa) with a 8 year guarantee on all voice chips."

Dave Smith Instruments Artist Interview with MATIA SIMOVICH aka INHALT

Many of you should be familiar with INHALT from numerous posts here on MATRIXSYNTH. Dave Smith Instruments just posted an interview with him. You can find it on their website here.

"A resident of the San Francisco electronic and experimental music circuit for nearly two decades, Matia Simovich’s productions and sound design have questioned the line between forward-thinking, avant pop and the depths of the underground. He honed his craft at the now-infamous Asphodel Studios/Recombinant Media Labs where, as an in-house producer, engineer, and sound designer, he collaborated with the likes of M.I.A., Keith Hillebrandt (Nine Inch Nails), and many others responsible for pushing the boundaries of the pop context. Never one to shy from the dark or the unorthodox, his production style is equally inclusive: hardware-centric and exudes the decadence and lushness of the past while integrating the precision and speed of today’s studio process. As the founding and principle member of INHALT, German for “content,” he defined this production style via several records put out by cult power house Dark Entries Records as well as Cleopatra Records. Most recently, he has collaborated with Peter Baumann (Tangerine Dream) on the Machines of Desire LP and has started a series of Artist Patch Bank libraries for various synthesizers."

Perfect Circuit Systems: Rhythm Series

Published on Apr 30, 2018 Perfect Circuit Audio

"Perfect Circuit’s Rhythm Series systems are an evolution of the drum machine concept into the world of Eurorack modular synthesizers, offering precise, repeatable rhythmic control and vast opportunity for forward-thinking sound design.

Built around some of the most progressive Eurorack modules, these instruments utilize physical modeling, granular techniques, additive synthesis, wavetables, and more to create a distinctly 21st-century sonic playground. With tremendously flexible sequencers, these systems break past the traditional drum machines’ rhythmic structures, promoting the creation of intricate, detailed rhythms impossible to execute on a TR-808 or TR-909.

For musicians driven by sound design and rhythm, the Rhythm Series is a perfect gateway out of the DAW and into the open territory of modular synthesis.

Check out the links below for more information on the Rhythm Series as well as our other preconfigured modular systems! And keep your eyes open for more systems in the near future…

"Superbooth 18 starts in less than one week and we can't wait to show you our new prototypes and synths!

We will be at booth number O236, come by to say hi :)

More over we will introduce our new products on Friday the 4th, 3:20pm at the Cinema (o120).

"This year will be about the Quadrantid Swarm release - we are actually waiting for the final product to come back from production.

Saddly we won't have the final version with us during the Superbooth.

It will feature the addition of a new cv input for the control of the Spread parameter of the oscillator, and a switch between decay and release for the envelope.

Oscillator modes have changed too!

We will start shipping the QS during the month of June."

"The real new player in the game is SWING, a pretty simple but life changing module that is going to give life to your sequencer!

Swing is a voltage controlled clock delay with 3 modes. Your sequencers are going to love it."

"Aside from it's bigger sibling the CS80 (basically 2 CS60s under one hood), it’s hard to beat the versatility and sheer expressiveness of the CS60... Paddles for every parameter... Juicy aftertouch assignable to numerous destinations . . . and that SOUND made famous by the great Vangelis . . .

You'll not find a better condition CS60. It's over 40 years old and not perfect but in remarkable condition and everything functions 100%. The touch slider feels practically new. It's been respected and babied it's whole life. This one also comes with the original legs, carrying case for the legs, AND expression pedal (I use for volume generally)! One thing to note: one of the 6 voices is pitched slightly flat. This is just the tuning of a pot internally but it didn’t bother me enough to do it. This is for the new owner if they desire.

Deciding to sell this synth was not an easy call to make, but I gotta slim down the studio for an upcoming move and it's time to go to a new loving home.

So don't miss out . . . This is it."

Soup Granular by The Strange Agency

SOUP vs iPad Pro - A from strange agency on Vimeo.
"quantum sound with SOUP granular synth"

Watch what happens at :34.

iTunes: Soup Granular - The Strange Agency LLC

"Retro Future

Inspired by the oil can delays of the 60s and our previous granular explorations, Curtis™ and Spunk™, Soup brings you a virtual magnetic fluid that you can record onto, slosh around, and play back from. You can use it as a unique delay effect or more like a granular synthesizer, concocting your own wholly novel sounds.

Quantum Sound

Soup breaks up recordings into individual sound quanta with which you can interact as if they made up an audio fluid. They can be played linearly or randomly, forward, backward, or even sideways. They can, moreover, be stirred together, giving a whole new meaning to mixing sound.

Sounds Touching

Not only is this an extremely visual audio experience, it’s terrifically tactile as well. With support for multi-touch, Soup lets you get in there and mangle the fluid in a way that’s simply not possible with knobs and faders.

Audio Palette

Soup will let you literally paint with sound. You can record external sounds through the microphone or import WAV files, slathering sound over the virtual fluid. Then your fingers can become play heads, reading back the sounds from any position, or multiple positions at once."

Grand Terminal v2 Airways update: all zero delay filters and freezer

Published on Apr 30, 2018 TheEndorphines

"Cool features are coming with version 2 firmware for GRAND TERMINAL (code-name AIRWAYS).
All filters are now zero-delay feedback (ZDF) and audio freezer #8 effect.
Available to download right away, see details at http://airways.endorphin.es

Pairs well with Winter Modular Eloquencer!
Come over to Superbooth 2018 and sequence Endorphin.es with Winter Modular at our booth's table O510 + O511.
In the following modular jam, Winter Modular Eloquencer plays Grand Terminal and its track 8 controls Freezer on-off and CV defines the speed of grain.

What's new list:
GRAND TERMINAL V. 2 ‘AIRWAYS’ (30.04.2018)

- all zero delay feedback filters with audio improved quality and less noise at the output.
- filter #1: 24 dB/oct low-pass transistor ladder zero delay feedback (ZDF) filter with resonance volume compensation.
- filter #2: MS-20 zero delay feedback 12 dB/oct low-pass filter. That filter has very powerful resonance (be careful :) and is now instead 18db/oct diode ladder.
- filters #3-4: vactrol zero delay filters. Identical to stock vactrol ones but with zero-delay nature. #4th filter has resonance volume damping to prevent clipping at high resonance level
- filters #5-7: state variable zero delay feedback 12 dB/oct filters (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass). Hi-pass closes fully into high-frequency silence even with full resonance
- filter #8: is unchanged – comb filter, since isn't possible to have it with zero delay nature, however fixed 2 kHz noise in the audio output
- volumes of all 8 filters are equaled (in power) when X is fully CW and Y is fully CCW
- in secondary mode while choosing filter volume and panning: when panning crosses the exact center (equal of left and right channels), follow me green LED blinks
- when we switch from 8th effect to 1st - green LED blinks and from 4th to 5th - red one.
- effect #8: FREEZE effect (instead of previous chorus): when the tap is pressed (or fever CV gate is on), the audio is looped by the grain length of fever knob and by speed defined by pressure knob or pressure CV applied."

Loopop review: KORG Gadget for Nintendo Switch - before you buy

Published on Apr 30, 2018 loopop

"KORG just released their version of Gadget for Nintendo’s Switch gaming console. Gadget for iOS and Mac are powerful workstations for music production and performance. The big question is, how well does Gadget translate to the world of console gaming? After reviewing it in depth, it seems Korg Gadget for Switch has a different goal in mind, at least in my opinion - certainly for this first version just released - and that goal is real-time, multi-person music creation and jamming.

To see if it accomplishes this goal, I tested it live with my daughter, and the result of our first jam session, for better or worse, is included in this clip.

Gadget contains 16 great core “gadgets”- synths and drum machines covering many forms of synthesis, and it sounds fantastic. You can build a song with multiple tracks (instruments) and scenes (e.g. intro, verse, chorus). Different scales, bar lengths and time signatures are supported, and there is copy/paste/undo functionality which means you won’t be wasting much time putting a track together.

The key differentiating feature as I mentioned above is its multiplayer capabilities. There are two multiplayer modes - one where up to four users all share the same screen and work on the same clip, gadget, mix or song at once, and a second split screen mode where each player gets a quarter of the screen to themselves. All players create the same song, but each can work on a different part, view or instrument, in their corner of the screen. You can’t switch between these modes mid song, which would be a nice future addition. An optional 5 minute timer mode helps keep you focused on finishing a track rather than just noodling…

All that said, if you’re looking for a direct port of the iOS version of Gadget for Switch you’re going to be disappointed. Gadget for Switch is a slimmed down version of its bigger siblings and is missing quite a few key features to be considered a complete digital audio workstation. I’m not sure if this lack of certain features is due to limitations of the Switch platform or just limitations of version 1.0, but things like connecting a USB or Bluetooth keyboard or controller, or audio or project export (aside from limited internal sharing), are just not available. If you want to export your song you’ll need to record it via the audio output or HDMI as I did in this clip.

Aside from the connectivity issues above, it seems like on the software side, this first version was optimized for a “TV mode” experience rather than handheld. Much of the touch screen doesn’t work where you’d expect it to - it’s completely inactive on the Song, Mixer and Clip/Piano roll screens, and only partially active in Gadget view. Hopefully this will be addressed in future updates. There are however some interesting motion play gesture controls that are shown in the clip.

So… what’s the bottom line? If you want to use Gadget on your own as music production digital audio workstation, with this first version of Gadget for Switch, you’re better off with their iOS or Mac versions.

Gadget for Switch is optimized for TV-mode using Switch controllers, with multiplayer gameplay in mind. If you’re looking for a fun experience creating songs with other people, Gadget for Switch is the best game in town."

Blade Runner Patch - Behringer Model D (Cinematic Uplifting Ambient)

Published on Apr 30, 2018 RemixSample

"Hello. In this song I'm using Volca Keys (midi out mod) to control the Behringer Model D. I also use my out of frame midi keyboard to control pitch and also play some notes with it because playing the KORG Volca Keys is difficult so it can get a bit stale.

Bandcamp:

So this is your basic Bladerunner / Vangelis type patch. Two saw waves slightly detuned with some LFO vibrato and a slow-ish attack. I play around with the EXT IN VOLUME to overdrive the sound. You'll hear it when the red light on the Model D lights up. The Valhalla Shimmer reverb does the magic as per usual.

The background ambiance is made with some softsynths and processed with Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch into a pad / drone.

This is all improvised so all the melodies aren't super interesting and some audio artifacts pop up when I play the Volca Keys from time to time, some type of midi overload glitch I think. What can you do... =.)"

New Modules from Joranalogue Coming to SUPERBOOTH18

via Joranalogue:

"As you've certainly noticed, Superbooth is nearly upon us. While gear heads and knob wigglers from around the world flock to Berlin, I'd like to invite you to my booth (E266, right at the entrance) to check out the new modules I'll be presenting there.

A quick introduction: my goal with Joranalogue is to introduce new ideas and techniques to the Eurorack platform. As an electronics engineer, I've spent years preparing, researching and developing new high-performance analogue synth circuits. Last year, I finally introduced my first modules: Switch 4, Test 3, Mix 3 and Compare 2. I'm passionate about getting things right, working closely with performing musicians and providing them with reliable hands-on hardware, designed and made in Belgium.

So, here's what's in store for 2018:

Filter 8 - Multimode Filter/8-Phase Oscillator
Representing the cutting edge in modular analogue VCF design, Filter 8 offers more possibilities and higher fidelity in 12 HP than ever before.

Select 2 - Dual Gated Precision Control Voltage Processor
A 'Swiss Army knife' for your modular system, Select 2 provides two highly accurate gate-controlled voltage processors in 6 HP.

Link 2 - Precision Buffered Multiples
2 HP buffered multiples. Low offset, noise and distortion: suitable for any signal.

Add 2 - Precision Adder/Averager
2 HP adder/averager. Low offset, noise and distortion: suitable for any signal. Each section can be set separately to add or average."

Also added to Day One here.

"Here (finally!) is my Day Two video for the fabulous Novation Peak 8-Voice Polyphonic Synthesizer. This has been a few weeks in the making, but I had in mind from the start an evolving longer-length soundtrack and that required a lot more time to put together the video.

The soundtrack itself goes on a kind of journey, it evolves through different phases but ultimately ends up where it started. This is very much how I see humanity evolving and that was the inspiration for the images that I chose for the video.

There is no synth-related information in this video, it is all about the sound and images, I will put together a "breakdown" video to go through my sound and composition choices next time.

BTW You can listen to the soundtrack on soundcloud here:

"Here's my introduction and first patch play around with the Erica Synths Graphic VCO. As I often do I wanted to share my literal first patch, which It think always reveals a good amount about a module. What's immediate? How does the interface feel? What sounds jump out with ease? I'm very impressed with the interface on this and having two encoders and a button is incredibly quick to fly around a range of great settings and sounds. The tune-able sub is a nice touch with options to blend the main output into the second sub orientated output, as is the option to have different waveforms or a copy of the main waveform for the sub. In depth and comprehensive video to come in the not too distant future."

Fun fact: Erica Synths' Graphic VCO made it's first appearance back in April 2015. You can find additional posts here.

Moog Slim Phatty Poly Chain x6 [Synth Demo]

Published on Dec 21, 2014 Pete Brown

Spotted this one on Lower West Side Studio in a post on chaining Moog Slim Phattys, aka "The Phatt Bastard".

"There aren't many videos of poly-chained Slim Phatty synths, and those that are there rarely show any pads. So, I decided to post this one. Six Moog Slim Phatty (module version of the Little Phatty) analog synthesizer modules poly-chained together. Effects are reverb and a stereo widener both by Valhalla and inside Cubase.

Patch noodling, not music. I was creating the patch on the master phatty in real time. I edited out the silence in between. I was trying to see what kinds of sounds I could get from this beast, especially big pad sounds."

Upcoming DIY midiphy LoopA MIDI Sequencer - Hawkeye - Microwaved (Waldorf Microwave 1, SID 8580 and friends)

Published on Apr 28, 2018 Hawkeye

"Hi, it has been a while...

This song sat on the sequencer for far too long - there were too many different melody lines going on and it was really difficult to bring it together - while i am not 100% convinced, it is the best possible effort with the midi clips i came up with, i hope you still like it - it had to be finished at some point, otherwise it would have occupied the sequencer for another few months :)

It was live sequenced on the midiphy LoopA - this small 'inspirational MIDI sequencer' will be available as an affordable DIY kit soon.

Other hardware used:
Dreamy string: Waldorf Microwave 1
Simple Lead: SID 8580 in MBSID/MB6582 synthesizer
Arpeggiated synth: Alesis Andromeda
Bass: MFB Dominion I
Second Lead: Roland V-Synth
Drums: Elektron Machinedrum
Audiograbber: Tascam DR-100
FX: Strymon Timeline and BigSky

Recorded directly from the hardware, only audio-compressed in post-production, but no DAW was abused during recording :).

Many greets to all DIY folks out there, you know who you are, thanks for your support and time!

I might be uploading a few DIY videos (e.g. how to build the LoopA sequencer used in this song) in the next time, if you are here only for songs, please don't go away, there will be more, later on :).

Thanks for watching and listening,
Hawkeye / Maelstroem Records"

Fat Sound/Slim Case: modding the Behringer Model D

Published on Apr 28, 2018 Olivier Ozoux

"I love my Behringer Model D, but I didn't really care for that big angled case, which turns out is mostly empty. So I decided that my first Behringer Mod will be to create a custom ultra slim case, hand made from a single piece of sheet metal.

And since I was having so much fun, I decided to use sounds from the shoot to create the music for this video. I hope you enjoy it.

Demo :: Prophet 8 vs Rev2 (no talking - just patches)

Published on Feb 15, 2018 SOLON Music

"Demo to compare the sound of the Prophet 8 and Rev2 playing the same patches. I used four patches from the factory presets for the Prophet 8 and three of my own patches:

1) Tom Sawyer
2) T8 Strings
3) Ice Planet
4) Analog Bliss
5) SOLON Arp
6) SOLON Swell
7) SOLON Homage to Synthmania

All patches were loaded up to the Rev2 via the Soundtower editor software.

I routed the MIDI from the Prophet 8 keyboard to the Rev2 and recorded the audio of both simultaneously so that the performances were exactly the same.

To hopefully make it intuitive to know which one is being listening to, the audio you are hearing is from the synth which is lit up - the other one is darkened."

Demo :: Eventide H3000 Presets using SH101+ Aphex Twin Riff - Reverb, Chorus, Delay, FX

Published on Apr 28, 2018 SOLON Music

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

"Demo of Eventide H3000 D/SE presets using Roland SH101 synth playing Aphex Twin riff from 'Tha' (Selected Ambient Works 85-92). 12 presets demo'ed:

211 CANYON
642 CRYSTAL ECHOES
231 MICROPITCHSHIFT
227 HUMP-VERB
635 BAND PAN
630 ALIENS
265 USEFUL VERB
197 SON OF KAMIKAZE
527 RICH CHORUS
181 HUNTER DELAY
243 RICH PLATE
396 HUGE SYNTH SPACE

Chose these presets because they worked well with the riff used and demonstrate a wide variety of the sounds that the unit can produce.

In Richard D James' own words: 'the Eventide H3000 d/se are absolutely mental lush devices, those ones in particular really envelop the sound rather than tack it on, special blessed bits of equipment. 3000 has something amazing though that few things can touch, i mean just the digital filters on it are insane, engineers must have been on fire when they made that thing.' (from the Syrobonkers interview)

SH101was recorded through Tube Tech MP2A preamp and Antelope Audio Eclipse converter into Ableton.

Audio from H3000 was recorded through Antelope Audio Eclipse converter into Ableton

Published on Feb 2, 2018 SOLON Music

"Demo of Minimoog Model D Reissue + Korg SQ-1 Sequencer + Alesis Midiverb II, using an acid techno style riff. The aim was to demonstrate the sound of the filter with the resonance set high and being modulated by a slow LFO. What I found special was that, where many synths become thin or piercing or digital, this just sounded hypnotic and musical...

Critter & Guitari - Euclidean Rhythms for Organelle

Published on Apr 28, 2018 Critter & Guitari

"This patch is a looping 16-step Euclidean Rhythm machine with an 8-voice sample player. A Euclidean Rhythm is an even division of beats within a measure, or as close to even as possible. This is a simple but powerful musical idea, especially when there are many ‘voices’ playing a rhythm.

Keys play samples. Knob1 controls tempo. Knob2 sets the density of the rhythm from 1-16 beats (AKA sample triggers). Knob3 shifts the rhythm relative to the measure's start. Knob4 controls the samples' decay. Aux button controls latch and sequencer. View the rhythm graphically or through the text-based parameter display.

Send the rhythm out as MIDI notes and/or control it with an external MIDI device. It is Ableton Link enabled for wireless tempo sync (WiFi adapter needed). Replace the samples to customize the patch sound!

Special thanks to Ela Minus for the drum samples used here!

Also channels 1 and 2 can be switched to be mixed with the subsequent channel, allowing for 1-1-1, 1-2, 3 mix configurations. Equal power pan law (3dB) is provided. Left and Right led indicators available for all three channels.

Several modules can be chained together via connections on the back side. This connection is possible with other Happy Nerding stereo modules too. At the moment PanMix Jr stereo output can be internally send to the Isolator module. Or stereo signal can be received from OUT and latest revision of PanMix."

CVilization - first prototype test run

Published on Apr 28, 2018 Urs Heckmann

Side project from u-he's Urs Heckmann.

"CVilization outputs 3 and 4 plugged into V/octave of two oscillators. Two voltages from Pressure Points plugged into CVilization inputs 3 & 4. Moskwa Sequencer plugged into CVilization input 2. Clock plugged into CVilization second CV input.

CVilization outs 3 & 4 quantized to minor scale, sample & hold from clock input.

First: Mixing input 4 onto outputs 3 & 4, so that both oscillators are controlled from one input (Pressure Points bottom row).

Second: Mixing input 3 onto output 3, to control the interval of one oscillator to the other (Pressure Points middle row).

Good for some noodling around.

Third: What about different depth of control? - Instant extra fun for noodling!

Forth: Adding input 2 (sequencer) into both oscillators. Which of course can be done at different depths as well for some nice variation.

Fifth: Changing depths, changing sequencer clock (Euclidean Circles) and direction (Forward - Pendulum).

Then, going back to minimum values."

021//Champion - Moog DFAM and Mother 32s melodic self-generating track

Published on Apr 28, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"A semi-self-generating modular patch using a DFAM sent through an Eventide Timefactor on vintage setting and 2 Mother 32s sent through an Eventide Space modechoverb reverb.

Finally, a DFAM! I've been looking forward to testing it in a self-gen patch for a while. Unfortunately I've discovered it works best by tweaking it manually, and requires other modules to make the most of it, but hey - restrictions make the patch more creative!

The main points of this patch are:
- The 'melody' is the same as the background arpeggio, only with the VCO Pulse out from the Mother 32 patched into the DFAM's Ext Audio input to give it the same rhythm as the drums.
-The Mother 32 playing the bass notes is glitched so that the sequencer runs slower than the input clock (see more here: https://youtu.be/v1y7X1M3iso)
- The VCA decay (the volume fade) of the DFAM is modulated to decrease, causing the drums to turn into clicks.

If you want to recreate this patch, you can find it here:

KORG Prologue SDK Development Boards Coming to SUPERBOOTH18

"A little something for Superbooth in Berlin next week."

Open source KORG. Remember the Prologue allows you to create your own oscillators and effects.

From this post on the Prologue:

The big surprise: "The prologue offers an SDK (Software Development Kit) that allows developers to program, customize and extend the capabilities of the multi-engine and digital effects and is expected to be available for download in the spring of 2018. The prologue provides 16 user oscillator slots and 16 user effect slots, and users can use the prologue Librarian software (also expected to be available for download in the spring of 2018) to load into their prologue new oscillators and effect programs created by developers with the prologue SDK (Software Development Kit)."

Curious if these Development Boards are required for the SDK or if they will allow more. Note the input and output. This of course implies you would be able to use the boards to process and output audio. What sort of engine will be provided? The full synth engine of the Prologue or a limited engine? MIDI and access to the SDK will be over USB. Note the lack of and MIDI jacks.
