"This was a Patreon chosen song that almost got lost to 2020, but I summoned all my energy and in a moment of impractical, love fueled madness, I was able to throw caution to the wind and pull one final cover out for you all. Thank you, my supporters and patrons, for keeping me going through this awful year."

"Last year many people around the world participated in the #Jamuary initiative. The idea is to share a jam - any jam on any instruments - each day in January 2021, and tag it with #Jamuary2021 so we all can find them! I am hoping we can unite the world again, and this time there's plenty of time to jam because of the lockdown. So feed your creativity and have fun as we wait for things to go back to normal.

This jam features a modular cover from Faithless' legendary Insomnia track which also features a small sample of Maxi Jazz, but mangled beyond recongnition with the Morphagene. On new years eve, nobody will be able to get some sleep!"

"This was 2020 for me. Obviously the pandemic was the major story throughout the year, but it gave me a lot of time with my daughter - and I got to share a lot of special time with her that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. So I am thankful for my time with her.

The first shot was from a trip my wife and I took to Duluth, a few weeks before quarantine. Even then we felt a sense of something bad coming. But we still went out and explored.

Anyway, here's 2020."

"This year marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the ARP 2500

Introduced in 1970, the 2500 was Alan R Pearlman’s first commercial product, being sold under his company’s name Tonus Inc. Alan had come from an engineering background, having worked as a designer for a company providing equipment for NASA, which was used on the Gemini and Apollo space programmes. Indeed, some of the circuitry and hardware that was sent into space was actually used in the 2500 synthesiser, giving an indication of the quality and precision of the instrument he was responsible for creating

The team that developed the 2500 must have put much time and thought into the development of the system before it was finally put into production. Contemporaneous equipment consisted only of modular systems, and therefore the concept of the pre-wired keyboard synthesiser had not yet been formed, and the only instruments (other than electric organs) that were available were fully or semi-modular in nature

With the 2500 the decision was made to do away with the patch-cord method of interconnecting the various signals and control voltages, replacing them with a series of matrix-switches to make the connections. There are several advantages with this design philosophy, but there are also a few disadvantages which I will describe later. The biggest advantage I can see is that it makes patching the system very neat and tidy, there being no cables to work around when building sounds. On a conventionally patched system, the amount of cables can build up very quickly to become a mass of tangled wires, which can obscure the control surface and legending on the synthesiser, making it hard to see what is going on. On the 2500 the controls are always kept clear

Continuing my plans going into 2021 and the writing of my new album, with this i will be posting template jam sessions to YouTube from which I will base and recreate the final tracks. These jam sessions are in no way finalised tracks, but you will be able to hear the main ideas before i start fine tuning the details.

If you join my patreon there will be behind the scenes materials, bonus tracks, stems, sound packs from these sessions and also a possibility to remix the future shortlist single for my release. You will be able to follow the creation of the entire album from idea to final product.

http://bit.ly/BurgPatreon

Track info:

Session 05 is a bit more upbeat style track, the idea was to use the Erebus as main theme, to showcase its nice creamy features.. dub style together with the RE-20 space echo and a huge modulated reverb in the empress really hit the spot.

Also, i wanted to dial it back a bit and make it a tad more minimal than the other tracks. Running at 115 bpm it is still pretty dense, so i hope there is air enough between the sounds making it enjoyable.

Make sure to have a happy new year everyone, i hope that 2021 will bring more music and less chaos. Stay safe all and do something nice for someone today !! Peace !

"Link to EP : http://bit.ly/WPResoFb

2020 was a bumpy year. But there was a major achievement for me, which is the release of Wing Pinger and Wingie. For so long I've been dreaming of designing standalone synth, for that standalone synths convey more of designers' ideas and decisions. The release of Wing Pinger and Wingie are not just a graduation ceremony for me, it marks a starting point for new adventures.

In 2021, I have two major plans for me. One is several collaborative synth projects with synth designers I've admired for a long time. Once done, it'll fullfill my life goal in some way. Another is working with Annqi for a Chinese synthesizer podcast and WeChat social media, it's called 合成少数派 (Synthesize Minority). You can consider following it if you use WeChat.

At this moment, I would like to release an EP, it's called Wing Pinger Resonator Feedback. It was an experiment I've done in April, by using Ableton Resonator in the feedback loop of Wing Pinger. The thoughts behind was to use Wing Pinger chaos for timbers and dynamics, and to use Resonator to broadly hinting stable pitches. In this case, there is no need to worry about pitch quantization in a chaotic system, but "quantization" happens naturally with resonances. This method frees up the chaotic system, and at the same time providing stable tonal feels.

This experiment inspired me and actually gave me a new way of thinking. It's the start of designing Wingie, as well as a start for a very important collaborative project, and certainly means a lot to me. I choose the first day of 2021 to release it, as I concluded 2020, and start the new year fresh.

Wish all of you good luck in your future endeavours.

オリジナル曲「RACING SPIRIT」YAMAHA CX11&FUJITSU FM77AV Version

NOZ MUSIC

Also see SEGA「SUPER HANG-ON」より「Winning Run」を「TX816」で作りました♪

Goolgish translation for the video description (original Japanese further below):

"RACING SPIRIT
Composition / Arrangement: NOZ
This song is inspired by a racing game.
Assuming that it can be used in SEGA's SUPER HANG-ON and OUT RUN, I finished the song for about 5 minutes.

This song was produced with the extended PLAY statement "EDPLAY" of FUJITSU FM77AV.
While playing the FM77AV's built-in OPN FM sound source YM2203, I play the YAMAHA CX11 FM sound source unit SFG-01 (YM2151) and YAMAHA RX21 connected to my own MIDI board via MIDI.
The CX11's SFG-01 has been converted into an FM sound module by TAINY SOUND MODULE, and the SFG-01's FM sound module YM2151 can be played with 8 multitimbrals.
The drum part uses YAMAHA RX21.
In other words, this song is played with YM2203 (3 FM sound sources & 3 PSG sound sources) + YM2151 (8 stereo FM sound sources) + PCM drum (9 tones).
For MIDI data, 11 parts of MIDI parts are transmitted from the MIDI board in the EDPLAY statement of FM77AV.
The remaining 5 parts are assigned to the FM77AV's built-in FM sound source YM2203's FM sound source 3 sounds and PSG sound source 2 sounds.
How long can you play 16 parts with the memory capacity of FM77AV? I made a test with the intention of exploring the limits.
As a result, I managed to complete the full chorus even though the memory was over.
The FM77AV can also be used as a 16-track MIDI sequencer by using the extended PLAY statement "EDPLAY", so it actually has great potential.
Those who like FM synthesis, those who like racing games, those who like SEGA, those who are interested in SYNTHWAVE, please listen ♪

Rare Kurzweil VA1 Demo

Kurzweil VA1 Quick Demo 1 by WeiserSound

Demo of the suepr rare Kurzweil VA1 that enver made it into production. Apparently the engine made it's way into the PC3X.

"I finally dusted off my VA1 and banged out a very quick/dirty demo with 9 tracks, one take each, no quantization, plus a cheesy drum track. The display closeup shows choices for oscillators, filters, "deform" (an extra block of shapers and distortions), "processors" (sub oscillators, ring mod, etc in the Osc section), modulation sources and FX (not implemented).

There's a tiny bit of reverb con everything, and a small amount of Laserverb on two of the leads, both coming from a KSP8. Most of the better DSP items survived and now live inside of the current Kurz boards like PC4, Forte and SP6. Note - many of the DSP items were experimental or iterations, never meant to see the light of day.

This is one of ten prototype units that were made, and one of the few that had the cooler paint job.

For music choice, I went with The Traitor, from Herbie Hancock's Manchild album, an old fav!"

I’ve been so busy past few months building DIY Buchla style modules... and I have NOT had any time to finish putting this Serge System together (its been sitting for way too long) until this afternoon. For me, the “test” of a system is when you sit down with NO patch cords (a blank slate) and start building a foundation patch.. then let it lead you into space. If I look up at the clock only to realize a few hours have past... well, then it all A-OK! Cheers - Adam"

John Bowen Solaris V2.0 Update Released

John Bowen

Above is a quick video from John Bowen on the new Phase Mod Oscillator posted back in March. You might remember mention of it in this post from February. The update is now available. Some details via the John Bowen Synth Design forum (pic via this previous post):

"I am very happy to announce the release of v2.0 Operating System for the Solaris!

I wanted to post a huge 'Thank You' to Jim Hewes, who has been laboring for almost 4 years on the Solaris OS. Jim has fixed more than 80 bugs, and added at least a dozen of features that I have requested. During this last year, not only did he completely re-work the entire SysEx code (replacing a bare-bones NRPN system) to allow for MIDI access to all of the now over 7300+ parameters (!), but has been working overtime to get a reasonable 4-part Multimode structure working. I think you will all agree what he has done is managed to save the Solaris from early abandonment to bring it forward as a still viable current instrument. What other hardware synth has been able to do that which came out 10 years ago?

I would also like to thank Hrast for coding the new Phase Mod oscillator type, and Sonic Core for providing the code for the CZ waveshape set. You can view Hrast's work under the name Hrastprogrammer and his wonderful software synth Transiztow: http://www.hrastprogrammer.com/hrastwerk/index.htm...

The biggest structural change is that each Multi Preset now is actually 4 layers deep, making it four times the size of a previous preset. All older presets will load as 4-part Multi Presets. Loading an older preset file automatically converts it into the new Multi Preset format. The new Multi Preset will populate Part 1 with all the parameters, including the Master FX, Output settings, Performance knob assignments, stored joystick position, SamplePool, arpeggiator settings, Assign switches, and BPM. As before, when the Preset LED is on, you are in Preset Mode. Touching any parameter knob will immediately jump out of Preset Mode and put the Solaris into Edit Mode. When in edit mode, the bottom line of the center display will display the current selected parameter, which now includes the part number as P1, P2, etc.

New Oscillator Type: PhaseMod (PhsMod)

In addition to all of the new Multimode features, a 7th Oscillator Type has been added. This features both “DX7-style FM” (otherwise known as Phase Modulation or PM) and Phase Distortion (PD, from the Casio family of CZ synths). The waveshapes provided are as follows: For PM – Sine, Morphing Saw (Morph1), Morphing Square (Morph2) For PD – CZSaw, CZSquare, CZPulse, CZSawPulse, CZReso1, CZReso2, and CZReso3.

For Phase Modulation, use PMod as the mod destination. For Phase Distortion, use the Shape knob and destination. (You can have both types of modulation going on, of course.) On the oscillator’s page 2, you will find Sync and Quant(ization) parameters. For the PhaseMod Type, the only sync value is Gate. For certain PM sounds, you need to ‘lock’ the start of the phase to make sure you have a consistent attack to the sound, or you don’t want to have phase cancellation with stacked oscillators. Gate works with the Phase setting, to restart the phase at a specific point for every note-on event.

Quantize reduces the bit resolution of the PhaseMod oscillator. The range is 0-31 (with 31 = 1 bit). Results are very subtle until you are in the 27-30 range.”

Modbap Per4mer Eurorack Effects Explanation and Jam by Trovarsi

Perfect Circuit

"Our friend Trovarsi came by to show us some of the sounds of the Modbap Modular Per4mer and explain how some of its features work. The Per4mer has four arcade buttons that switch on DJ style effects (delay, reverb, glitch and tape stop). There is also a color processor that gives everything you pass through it the sound of a digital sampler, or some saturation or a vinyl emulation. The Per4mer has a compressor that can do regular compression as well as sidechaining or compress a signal in time with a clock.

Of course since the Per4mer is a eurorack module you can trigger the effects with triggers instead of pushing the buttons, and you can control the knob settings with the CV inputs. The Per4mer is also stereo in and out!

* it uses his non-MIDI analog wind controller (very smooth!)
* it explains his rig
* it use my Fricko modules so the emphasis is on the cohesive variation of tone over the range of notes:

# Blip! waveshaper (constant breadth waves, like Variophon),
# Shell wavershaper (gappy waveshapes whose harmonics don't monotonically decrease in level),
# Splice combiner (36db/8ve reverse crossover, to give effect found in many wind instruments).

Arcaico Kairos VCA-DELAY #modularsynthesizer #eurorack #arcaico #delay

Arcaico Instruments

"Kairos is analogue hybrid that reproduces the classic vintage BBD/Echo tape delay with VCA integrated, delay tone control and a dedicated wet out. The delay time range goes from 0.05ms to 1.1sec.

Technical specifications:

VCA (with attenuator)
CV time control (with attenuator)
TONE control delay
WET dedicated out
LOOP function
FEEDBACK control

10 HP
50mm deep"

"Reverb in eurorack format inspired by the infamous Reverberation Machine, built in THT technology with passive welded 'point-to-point' components, characterized by a VCA input and a post reverb distortion.

The input section is controlled by an integrated VCA. The TONE switch darkens or lightens the signal. The Decay, controlled in CV, through LDR resistor allows to create a large reverb: increasing the Decay to maximum level the feedback extends to infinity. The GAIN control allows to saturate the post-reverb signal. The RAVE button short-circuits the IN and OUT of the module, so as to obtain an infinite and self-regenerative feedback, creating auto-oscillation of the effect."

"Upper left rack ear is slightly bent, but does not cause any problem when racking the synthesizer. Please see the picture.

This is a great synth module with 1000 patches (800 preset, 200 user). Simple to use.

The Oberheim Matrix 1000 is the same architecture of the Oberheim Matrix 6 in a single space rack unit featuring 1000 Matrix Synth patches. Like the Matrix 6 and 6R, it features 6 voices of polyphony, 2 DCO's per voice, a low pass filter, 2 VCA's, 3 ADSRS and 2 LFOS. While it does have the same powerful sound engine as the Matrix 6, it can only be edited via an external MIDI editor and is largely seen as a preset driven Matrix 6 in a small space."

Metasonix S-2000

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The S-2000 is not merely a new repackaging of old designs. It is a revolution, and a game changer. Metasonix does not make “clones” of “vintage” gear, so you will find the S-2000 to be completely different from any other musical instrument you have ever used. It is capable of simulating some classic “vintage” synthesizer sounds, but because of the numerous quirks of vacuum-tube electronics, it is able to do very much more than that.

Unlike ordinary analog synths, the S-2000 has an all-tube signal path. It is a basic yet flexible path: Operator 1, which can be used as a bandpass filter but is more likely to be used as a voltage-controlled oscillator, feeds directly into Operator 2, which is an identical circuit. Its output goes into the VCA, where an envelope is imposed on the signal.

All the controls to the left of Operator 1 are the CV effect controls. The S-2000 has three “contour” or envelope generators: C1 controls the VCA envelope, and has rise and fall (attack/release) controls. C2 and C3 are transient, or “attack/decay” envelopes. They can be used as LFOs by activating their REPEAT switches. The speed of the repetition is controlled by both the rise and fall knobs, so they are used as LFOs with variable duty cycle. The built-in ribbon controller is a standard SpectraSymbol 400mm industrial position sensor, requiring only a very light touch to activate."

Check this WIKI page if you want too see if your unit may be supported: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_Sound_Canvas

MOK Introduces Filtryg Professional Dual Filter Effect

MOK Filtryg Introduction

"MOK is excited to introduce Filtryg, a professional dual filter effect with deep sound sculpting features to aid in mixing, or add new dimensions in rhythm and timbre to recorded tracks. The integrated envelope follower, wide range LFOs, and MIDI keyboard tracking, each react to your playing as well as your source audio, forming an inspired filter effect that becomes a part of your performance.

The Filtryg dual filter effect plugin offers three filter types with a 12 dB State Variable Filter running in series or parallel with a choice of either 24 dB Ladder, or multiple modes of Biquad, each with their own personality and character. The State Variable Filter is continuously morph-able from Lowpass to Highpass filter modes, with either Bandpass or Notch in-between, while the Ladder and Biquad have a Drive control for extra punch and crunch on the output.

Filtryg’s visually striking interface offers a knob-based control surface, familiar to synthesists and effects users alike. The audio path, modulation routes, and their respective controls are all plainly visible and understandable from the front panel, enabling intuitive and speedy effect construction. It is possible to set up the harmonic-rich sound of audio rate filter FM, including assignable keyboard tracking, in just a few seconds. Finally, all of Filtryg’s parameters are available to automate from the plugin host.

Filtryg is compatible with AAX, AU and VST on Mac, PC and Linux, and is available now at MOK.com.

Features:

- Dual filter configuration in Series, Parallel or Mixed for flexible timbral shaping

ESK - analog Drums and a Graphic Equalizer

Metunar

"Got an old analog Rane GE60 Graphic Equalizer (2x 30 band with +/-12dB on each band).
So i thought to make a video that shows some nice sound experiments i can do with it.
I had 3 setups in mind:
1. Use the EQ as mono to stereo effect.
2. Use it as a kind of filterbank (+/-24dB on each band).
3. Add feedback and distortion to the filterbank setup.

All is done with a Arturia Drumbrute, a Rane GE60 EQ and in the last setup a Boss KM-60 mixer.
The Boss is wonderful for distortion sounds.

I’m always showing fist the clean signal from the drummachine and then with the EQ effect.

Direct recording without mastering.

HEXE FX - JawsFX

"I was tasked with designing a JAWS themed pedal as part of a birthday gift for a true fan of the movie.
This is what i came up with:

- pedal allows to endlesly loop the iconic music theme,

- play an instrument over it,
- add a few randomly chosen quotes from the movie,

- alter the music track with manual or envelope controlled lowpass filter.
Ontop of that the pedal works as a stereo plate reverb and can be used that way with all the background sounds switched off.

Uses Teensy4 as it's main audio engine.
... and being a birthday gift, has a few hidden easter eggs :)"

WVR : modern, open source, embedded audio for $25

Currently on Kickstarter here.

Quick details via WVR:

"WVR is an ESP32 with a nice DAC and 8GB of fast eMMC memory. 18 stereo voices of simultaneous playback (at CD quality), which I think is something really needed in this space, in an open source project, at this price point.

The project also includes
a USB MIDI HOST add-on board,
a neat JavaScript library called RC.JS designed to help Arduino folks build GUI's, using React Native and Expo
the ability to store multiple firmware binaries in the eMMC, with the ability to boot from any of them
some tools to make building multi-sampled instruments a snap
2 dev boards
a stompbox version
etc, etc."

via the Kickstarter campaign:

"WVR is an open-source embedded solution for audio, with surprising capabilities. It includes everything you need to get started with embedded audio, with no soldering, and no coding necessary. WVR arrives ready to operate.

WVR is also a highly versatile device, capable of powering a new generation of embedded audio design, thanks in part to its wifi and bluetooth radio, providing all the power of a versatile and extensible Graphical User Interface ( GUI ), without the need for a screen or other interface. Users can upload samples, manage firmware, set configurations, build sequences, or control any other data imaginable, both wirelessly, and intuitively, using their laptop, or mobile device, inside a web browser, or even on a native mobile app on Android or iOS.

Capabilities:

Playback up to 18 stereo wav files simultaneously, with ~1ms latency

Accepts virtually every audio file format, at any resolution, and any size, including wav, mp3, ogg, acc, flac, pcm, aiff, and many more

Upload audio, map samples to MIDI notes, configure pin functionality, apply FX, manage files, etc, all over WIFI, with the default firmware that WVR ships with, and without writing any code

Holds over 12 hours (8 GB) of stereo audio, at 16bit 44.1kHz resolution

Can buffer over 1.5 minutes (16 MB) of stereo audio in RAM alone, at 16bit 44.1kHz resolution
Optically isolated MIDI input, provides to-spec MIDI input implementation without any additional circuitry

14 GPIO pins, 8 of which can be analog inputs, and 4 of which can be capacitive touch inputs, plus the many peripherals available on the ESP32 .

WVR's Wifi can function either as a Station or Access Point (it can login to an existing wifi network, or can create its own network and accept connections directly from devices in range, without a router or local network of any kind)

write firmware in Arduino, and upload over wifi. Stores multiple firmwares onboard, selectable via the UI. Fully compatible with the extensive, and battle-tested ESP Arduino library, and the exceptionally powerful ESP-IDF framework.

use RC.js JavaScript framework to modify, or custom build, the User Interface that WVR serves to users, without prior knowledge of CSS, HTML, Babel, Node, etc. Even build and deploy native mobile apps for iOS or Android from the same code base. You can play with RC.js in this REPL, try modifying the existing code, to see how it's intuitive, and highly portable, component-based syntax works, and check out the README.md file to learn more.

onboard Ultra Low Power (ULP) co-processor means WVR consumes only ~10uA in sleep mode

// Electronics // Sound synthesis // Computer Coding

While building 8knobs you’ll learn everything from the basics like soldering to the fundamentals of sound synthesis, electronics and computer codes by understanding, engineering and experimenting with signal flow. Learn the art of signal flow by building your own custom synthesiser and controller for more experiments!

Experience

// Creative learning and new approaches

Getting familiar with signal flow unlocks a wide range of new opportunities to innovate and produce technical as well as creative applications in various media - both analog and digital.

Just like the flow of signals in the brain are interconnected and influence each other. For example, like neurons communicating information in both chemical and electrical forms, can result in infinite combinations of thoughts, words, and actions, similarly, playing with signal flow in hardware (electronics), software (coding) and space (acoustics) can result in infinite creative expressions.

The art of signal flow offers endless possibilities, and whether you take it up as a hobby or use it to pursue a life-changing innovation is for you to choose. Either way, it’s a great feeling to get your hands dirty in the energetic flow of signals and DIY culture!"

Isla Instruments S2400: Audio Engine & Analog Outs Comparisons

Paul

"Showing the lovely differences you get in the S2400 using the difference sampling / playback engines. A rough conclusion is: if you want super old-school alias-heaven, sample AND playback using the 12bit engine. If you want to back off from this slightly, sample using the 24bit engine but playback using 12bit. In addition, you can remove aliasing using the analogue output filters or, just use these for effect.

Pad 6: Sampled: ‘Hi-Fi’ 24Bit 48Khz
Playback: ‘Hi-Fi’ 24Bit 48Khz

Pad 7: Sampled: ‘Hi-Fi’ 24Bit 48Khz
Playback: ‘Classic' 12-Bit 26Khz

Pad 8: Sampled: ‘Classic' 12-Bit 26Khz
Playback: ‘Classic' 12-Bit 26Khz

BTW, YouTube makes these comparisons less apparent; in real life, the differences are maybe 25% more obvious."

Endorphin.es Running Order V2 firmware update: ratchets, probability, Euclidean shift, live recording

Endorphin.es

"What is new in Firmware v2.0?

Release notes: v.2.0: 29.12.2020

Live recording: now you can record a new sequence by toggling the Track select switch to the side and the current sequence will continue playing until we enter the new sequence and switch back to the center.
Ratcheting and Probability in the Standard (a.k.a. Step Input) mode.
When in the record state: current’s track knob (Repeats I for Track I and Repeats II for Track II) sets the ratcheting amounts for current step (0 to 3).
Another track knob (Repeats II for Track I and Repeats I for Track II) sets the probablity of current step (1% to 100%).
Ratchet means that trigger fires per current step not once, but up to 3 times more (4 in total with original trigger).
If Repeats I/II knobs are not touched on enabling the record switch and entering the steps, then the probablity is always 100% and all the ratchets are off.
Once we move each of track’s knobs during the record state, we set ratchet and probability values for current step and if we don’t change the knobs – those values apply to the next steps. To remember probability / ratchet parameter in step mode, first set the parameter value and then press step button to lock the value to a current step and change the new one.
Offset and Probability in the Euclidean mode.
When in the record state: current’s track knob (Repeats I for Track I and Repeats II for Track II) sets the offset amount -8 steps in CCW to 0 to +8 steps in CW of the euclidean circle grid.
Another track’s knob (Repeats II for Track I and Repeats I for Track II) sets the probability 1% in CCW to 100% CW of triggers appearing.
Sync inputs even more improved. Sync latency reduced to 100 micro seconds. Once external clock is paused for longer than 1 second and then continues again, that acts as a sync on both inputs.
Bug fix: previously if Repeats knob was set to fully CCW, then the divider knob would not have any effect on the speed of the track with external clock applied."
