A new release by supporting MATRIXSYNTH member, Ian Richter.

"IDR-Newswire / TEL AVIV / May 29th 2018 / ​Tel Aviv-based South African-born musician and producer Ian Richter has just released his first LP under the moniker ​Ricatelli​. The album, entitled “An Arab and a Jew Make Sweet Love”, offers an eclectic electro-acoustic collection of mid-tempo grooves layered with everything from Eastern percussion to modular synthesizers.

When asked about what inspired the album, Richter recalled the scandal surrounding Dorit Rabinyan’s 2014 novel ​All the Rivers​, explaining, “'It's insane to me that a book telling the love story of an Arab and a Jew was removed from the high school curricula in Israel. With all the literature about war and conflict, why remove the one positive example?'

The album is mostly instrumental, and takes the listener on a journey through a variety of beat-based music genres. Richter produced the album at his home studio, recording a colorful palette of instruments including synthesizers, guitars, samplers, and drums. Some tracks include vocal takes, mostly performed by Richter, with the addition of manipulated samples and computer-generated speech.

Richter views the root of the Middle East conflict as 'a segregation caused by fear-mongering that exists in many parts of the world', saying, '​As a musician, I thought I'd just point to something that's already going on - love between Arabs and Jews. Oh, and yes, they have sex too.'

The album 'An Arab and a Jew Make Sweet Love - By Ricatelli' ​is available on all major streaming platforms and online music stores.

Having lived in two of the world’s most conflicted regions - South Africa and Israel - Ian Richter has been exposed to culture through a unique set of circumstances. Growing up in the sleepy surfer town of Durban, Richter eagerly absorbed the sonic influences offered to him, drawn to both Western and African music. Moving to Israel at the age of 18 offered him the chance to connect to a more active alternative music scene. Tel Aviv proved to be fertile soil, and collaborations with a variety of artists led to playing the local circuit and gaining experience as a live performer. "The audiowerkstatt trigger2midi2trigger v2 converts analog trigger-clock-signals to MIDI-clock-signals and vice versa.

It can also be used as an analog trigger-tool.

If used as trigger-clock-to-MIDI-clock-converter or MIDI-clock-to-trigger-clock-converter, there is always a MIDI-clock-signal (incl. start/stop) sent at the "midi out"-jack. At the tip of the "clock"-phone-jack, an analog trigger-clock-signal (v-trigger: 0v/5v, s-trigger "open"/"closed") is sent. The tip of the "start/stop"-phone-jack is 5v while the masterclock is running and 0v while the masterclock is paused for v-trigger and "closed" while the masterclock is running and "open" while the masterclock is paused, if s-trigger is used.
A clock-source can be connected to the "midi in"-jack or to the ring of the "clock"- and "start/stop"-phone-jack.

Normal insert-cables can be used to connect the analog inputs/outputs. If only the analog outputs are used, normal phone-jack-cables (mono or stereo) can be used.

The Bass and lead lines are both coming from the superpower Novation Circuit Monostation, which is also proving the CV sequence to control the Mother-32's filter. Finally all the other percussion is taking care of by the brutally reliable Circuit Bent Alexis SR-16! This was all recorded and then edited & mixed in Logic with a bit of compression, Eq & verb. This track was so much fun to produce and I hope it gets you moving' and/or groovin'!"

Multi-track tape killer? EHX 95000 by Electro-Harmonix reviewed w/ Moog Subharmonicon

"The Electro-Harmonix EHX-95000 is the latest in its series of multi-track loopers. The concept behind these loopers is simplicity, and for the most part, knob per function.

Electro-Harmonix were clearly going for scale here: the EHX95000 can live loop into 6 mono tracks, which can be used alternatively as 3 stereo tracks. It also has a seventh "mixdown" stereo track that can live record all 6 mono tracks, including their level and panning motion, and mix them down into one stereo track, freeing the 6 tracks for even more live looping.

Each of the tracks has its own dedicated level control, and the six mono tracks have panning control as well. Panning can be used to separate your tracks in the stereo field, but also, as I show in the video review, as a performance tool to send each track through a different external effects chain.

The combination of 6 mono tracks and one stereo mixdown track is called a Loop, and the EHX95000 can store 100 of those on a removable SD card. The supplied 16GB card can store up to 375 minutes.

There's an easily accessible UNDO button to clear up recording mistakes or as a performance tool.

Once a loop is recorded, it can be overdubbed, with an ability to control the level of the part you're dubbing over, so "old" parts of a loop can gradually fade away as you record new ones. There's also a "punch" in function if you prefer to replace part of a recorded loop rather than overdub.

Loop length can be determined in real time, or quantized to a pre-set tempo. A metronome is available with a count-in function, and since there are dedicated headphone outputs, your audience need not be troubled with the metronome clicks.

Additional performance features include one-click reverse, one click octave drop, and the ability to adjust the pitch and tempo of a loop after you record it. This can be done either via smooth control or quantized to semitones. Pitch and tempo shifting go together – you can't change one without the other – the higher you raise the tempo, so goes the pitch, and vice versa.

In terms of connectivity, the EHX-95000 has two L/R inputs with 1/4 inch/XLR jack type connector, with a phantom power switch. There are separate headphone and L/R outputs, as well as a monitor output and AUX input. A USB port means you don't need a card reader to read or write to the SD card. WAV files can be transferred to and from the SD card so you can save your loops, or import pre-recorded ones. There's also an expression pedal input to control loop levels.

The included MIDI in and out ports give you extensive control over the EHX-95000 via MIDI commands.

PROS: Very easy to use and learn, plenty of tracks with knob-per-function control; extensive MIDI controls

CONS: All 7 tracks in a loop need to be the same length; no onboard effects."

I recently finished assembling two further Nava TR909 clones. Before letting one go I thought it might be fun chaining two units together... ;)

First test run, nothing special. Just a few patterns... Unfortunately changing patterns accurately isn't possible yet. They change immediately when the next pattern is selected. I am pretty sure this issue will be addressed with one of the coming software updates...

3. Nava (Roland TR 909 Clone) desoldering circuit board components

Today I got my new desoldering Station (ZD-915). There are a few defective components I need to replace. Regular desoldering with wire or pump can really be a pain in the ass, especially when the pads are so tiny and close together. After doing some research I found lot's of good comments on the ZD-915. Here you can see how well it's getting the job done...

We go over how my gear is setup: Novation Circuit sequences a Roland System 8 and a Moog Sub 37.
We add a final sequence on the onboard System 8 sequencer and then record a final jam.

In our third practice song we swap our analog delay for an MXR Bass Overdrive pedal, taking the output from the Sub 37. Circuit sequences Sub 37 and one of the two Roland System 8 patches. System 8 is in split "performance" mode, using onboard sequencer for upper half.

"In this video we used the Numark PT01 mini turntable with a few 7” records run through the Empress Effects Echosystem, the Moog DFAM is keeping a beat underneath the turntablism. The PT01 can play 12” or 7” records and has a built in scratch switch for cutting the sound in and out while scratching. We used a Hawaiian record and an Oren Ambarchi track for the sound sources. The Echosystem is a powerful stereo delay with 12 algorithms which each have multiple modes.

"Sammich SID music sythesizer with 2 SwinSID chips installed. The chips has a jumper to select between MOS 6581 or Mos 8580.

I don't use arcrylic case anymore. They are soft and fragile, lots of scraches/marks overtime. That's why I am using a new design aluminum case. I've also added a fan next to the regulators. As you know the regulators generate lots of heat and the SID chip is right next to it and they are working at a very high temperature. The heat will damage the SID overtime and causing a broken filter, so a fan next to it will help releasing the heat from the regulator. The rack mount ears is optional. CNC pre-cut all sockets at the bottom of the case, you can remove them easily and plug all midi and audio sockets to the back. Add the rack mount ears and turn the unit to a rack mount unit. Optional rack mount ears will be extra $20 including all midi & ausio sockets for installation. I only have 10 sets of rack mount ears at the moment and they only comes in black."

Eurorack delayed envelope VSL D-ENV self-cycling looping feature demo

1. Jump the GATE IN jack and D-G IN jack with a stackable.
2. Set the DELAY to maximum, and the HOLD to about 50%.
3. Use another cable plugged into the jumper at the D-G IN jack and momentarily connect to the INV OUT jack (this takes advantage of the INV OUT's resting or nominal +8V for a positive trigger feed into the D-G IN jack which in turn feeds the DELAY timer a signal to start the timing process.
4. In less than one second after initially connecting the INV OUT to the trigger cable, move it over to the D-G OUT jack before the HOLD L.E.D. goes out. If you connect before then, you should have a self-cycling D-ENV!

The above procedure is safe to perform on the D-ENV module. Any deviation from this method, including different voltages, different systems, or modifications are not recommended by VSL.

Abecedarians in the Studio w/ a Moog Modular

I picked up Abecedarians reissue of Eureka on vinyl and look at what was inside. The album was released back in 1986.

I'm curious if the image was taken at the recording studio or their own studio as their music isn't really synth heavy (see below). If anyone knows feel free to comment.

"This fully wood-cased beast is a classic String-Synth of the seventies from Yamaha. It is "multi-phonic" as it uses a divide-down, electric organ type of architechture for its tone generation. There are two tones for each note so it's probably fair to say it's dual-oscillator, and it can create some really lush timbres. It's richer sounding than the ARP Solina String Synth. It has an individual VCA envelope for each key. The four-octave keyboard is not velocity sensitive, and the synth offers just a few controls above the keyboard for choosing preset sounds, and modest tweaking (no filters, LFOs, etc). It has been used by Utravox & Midge Ure."
