Dave Smith Tempest 808 Kick Drum Tutorial

Published on Mar 30, 2017 AdamSchneiderMusic

"After seeing some rumors that the Dave Smith Tempest is lacking when it comes to bass drum power I decided to make this video where I recreate the classic 808 kick sound. Simply put: the Tempest can design kicks that are as deep and thumpy as you want, you just need to know how to program it. While I didn't do it in this video, the sounds of the Tempest only get better with additional effects processing similar to the techniques used on the classic 808/909 machines.

I highly recommend listening with a sub woofer or headphones.

Tiptop Audio One Flux Sampler Techno Patch

Published on Mar 31, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"The Tiptop Audio One 24 bit 96 kHz sample player is having it’s pitch CV controlled by the Make Noise Pressure Points and Brains while the samples are manually changed with the knob. Everything in this patch is sequenced by the 4MS Quad Clock Distributor. The droney kick drum is the Hexinverter Mutant BD9. Different colors of noise from the SSF Quantum Rainbow are run through the Optomix as well as the AJH Mini Mod VCF which is opened with the Erica Synths HADSR. The Z-DSP provides a delay on the output of the VCF as well.

One provides the powerful combo of high fidelity and low latency to make modular sample playback both versatile and expressive. One has several methods of sample playback, with the primary being the super low latency Trigger mode that can play samples with a delay as low as 0.25ms. The module's multifunction CV jack provides configurable control over free or quantized pitch, and can also cycle through samples to create interesting sequenced patterns.

Intellijel System featuring Polaris

Published on Mar 31, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"For this patch, two Dixie II+'s were mixed together using the Quadratt 1U, with Saw, Square, Zigzag, and Sub outputs. The mix of this is then fed into the Polaris filter/phaser. This is then fed into the Quad VCA, with the volume controlled by Envelope 2 of the Dual ADSR. The Planar is then used to control the cutoff of the filter, as well as the resonance amount. The final output is fed through the Digiverb 1U, and the Line Out 1U."

OP-Z Music Sequencer Tutorial - Development Sneak Peek

"Hello! Here's a unique sneak peek music making tutorial, on the still-in-development OP-Z from Teenage Engineering. An in depth look at how the music aspect of the machine works. It's a true sequencer with lots of possibilities.

It's still in development. The factory sound engines, samples and effects will definitely receive a lot of attention as the OP-Z moves closer to beta. Right now, it's an early peek at the almost complete sequencer.

Also the LED's and buttons will receive a lot of adjustments moving towards the next build. But largely I think the design is locked, so TE feels confident in showing it now.

Cheers!

New Audio Damage Ensō Audio Buffer Eurorack Module

via Analog Industries

"That right there is a mockup of our new baby, Ensō, which is an audio buffer module in 22hp, with 50 seconds of stereo 48/24 audio memory, and various ways for looping/triggering/etc that buffer. We're done with the hardware design, and are working on the software now.

You can come see it (and the new Eos module) in person if you're in the LA area. I will be doing an Audio Damage clinic/Q&A at Perfect Circuit in Burbank this Wednesday, April 5th, at 7PM. Facebook event page with all the deets is here. Derrick Baseck will be doing a performance, and I'm given to understand there will be pizza and beer, two of the three major food groups. We will be giving away a couple modules, and buttons and stickers and the other usual shit, and I may extemporaneously perform for 15 minutes myself.

In other news, the first articles for the hardware version of Eos will be on the way to me today. So just a beta-testing round and then that will be shipping. Figure two weeks to stores at this point.

And finally, we will be attending Superbooth in Berlin again this year. I'm flying in to Prague on April 15, and then driving up to Berlin a couple days later. If you are in town and want to hook up, get at me in the usual methods."

I thought there was something sinister about the place, like a scene from a budget horror flick, so it seemed fitting to record something less than pretty.

Synthesizers.com Q173 Gate Math & Q131 Custom MATRIXSYNTH Panel!

A synthesizers.com Q173 Gate Math arrived at my PMB today! It is the latest edition to my synthesizers.com Box11 system - click through for some pics and an overview of the system, pre-Q173.

To my surprise, a custom MATRIXSYNTH branded Q131 panel was included! How cool is that?

Further below you will also see the cover of the current synthesizers.com product brochure, the Q173 manual, a synthesizers.com business card which folds into a modular cabinet, and if you look closely at the top left corner of the MATRIXSYNTH branded Q131 panel, you will see small, flat, transparent 1/4 jack keychain trinket. It's actually pretty cool, and it will have a permanent home in my studio.

"Here I am using an Arturia Keystep to clock my big MFOS (DIY) sequencer and run the DX7II (off screen) on MIDI. The MFOS sequencer is triggering the 909 (DIY) clone triple toms and kick. The Wasp (DIY) is played freestyle, no sequencer or trigger.

Ya, I know the video sucks, but this is about the sound of the Hexinverter Nein-oh-Nein PCBs and the wasp. I recorded the sound off the mixer and then synched it to the video track using Adobe Premiere. I am ever amazed at how I can run multiple digital and DIY analog synths with the Arturia Keystep.

- MFOS Sequencer (4 x 16 CV/Gate/Trigger) large blue unit at top of screen

- Jasper Wasp is the black unit I am tweaking
- Yamaha DX7IIFD is off screen and behind me.

Details on the New Tiptop Audio Fold Processor

Fold Processor from Tiptop Audio on Vimeo.

"The Fold Processor is a voltage controlled analog effect ideal for adding a distortion or rough edges to any sound passing through it. The fold circuit is based on the classic diode wave multiplier that adds odd harmonics by ‘folding’ the incoming signal with increased gain. Its noisy analog character is part of the charm.

Internally there are two sections, a wave folder section followed by a sub divide generator. The wave folder creates the classic fold sweeping effect and has a dedicated output jack. The subdivide generator squares the fold output generating 4 more sounds spaced one octave apart, each with its own gain knob, and all are mixed together at the Subdivide output jack. Adjustable bias from the Inject control and Fold knob are both voltage controlled and alter the bias point for the subdivider creating instability of the divider circuit. Overall results can sound evil at times and sweet at others, a true devil."

"Keyboard has been recapped, new wiring, battery replaced/modded, tuned/calibrated, includes complete Tubbutec Mody/Poly kit which adds midi among other features to this classic synth. The kit cost €179 + ship. So basically $200. Nice thing is you don't have to wait on shipping or stock availability.

The bad:

The Arp suddenly stopped working. Everything else works perfect. It was working fine, attempted to send a CV via a Sub-37 to the Arp clock input, after that, it stopped working. The arp button works (engages arp mode), hold works in arp mode, keys work in arp mode, LED correctly follows arp speed via rate knob, but pattern does not arp. It's almost like the clock input is still looking for a cv signal. I imagine this is a relatively easy fix. I have adjusted my price to reflect this. Aside from that and a few cosmetic blemishes (chipped wood, see pics), all is excellent."

Old Ideas From Pittsburgh Modular

Thought this was pretty cool. Pittsburgh Modular is sharing some modules that never made it into production on their Instagram feed. The following are a few captured for the archives (note: I'm adding them as they come in).

via pghmodular

"Old ideas 1. Fragments Generator was an attempt at analog granular synthesis. A great idea that just did not sound good enough in practice. The module in the picture works but it sounds thin and is treated like an interesting design experiment. We made the mistake of announcing the Fragments Generator before it was finished but the circuit never sounded good enough take beyond prototype. We did like the panel layout and later used it for the Analog Replicator. #eurorack #synthesizer"

Knowing Your Way Around a MakeNoise System

Intellijel µMIDI Tutorials

Intellijel µMIDI Tutorial 1 - MIDI to CV

Published on Mar 30, 2017 intellijel

"In this first part of the µMIDI tutorial series, we learn the basics of MIDI to CV conversion, along with what the µMIDI is, what it does, and why it is useful for a eurorack synthesizer.

The µMIDI provides all the essentials to control and sync your Eurorack modular from your computer, iPhone/iPad, or hardware MIDI device with a minimum of fuss. No menu diving or configuration scripts, just two buttons. The connectivity, feature set, and compact size make the µMIDI ideal for integrating your modular with the rest of your rig while not taking up too much space in your case.

The upper clock section features a dedicated 16th note clock output ideal for synchronizing a Eurorack sequencer like the Metropolis. A second clock output with selectable divisions can be used when difference sync events are needed. The run and reset outputs can be used to reset your Eurorack sequencers in tandem with any external sequencer or DAW.

"For sale is a Minimoog Model D that has been chopped and modified. The mods are designed to interface with a Kenton Pro 2000 MKII Midi to CV interface or something similar. With the interface, you will be able to add a multitude of expression to you playing that isn't normally found on a Minimoog via MIDI CC messages that are converted into control voltages.

I've tested most of the features and the synth appears to be working properly. The first oscillator is slightly out of tune. The back panel support is gone.

The additional knobs at the top left control panel read Bend Amount, Dynamic VCF Amount, and LFO amount.

The extra control voltage inputs are Bend In, Dynamics In, Touch In, Mod In.

It also has CV In and Gate In. I'm assuming these are for interfacing with Roland and ARP.

The serial number is 78xx so this one probably has the buffer board and the more desirable oscillator board."

The Pro 2 can act as a very powerful guitar pedal with its built in distortion, decimator, hack, drive, dual analog filters, envelope follower and 4 delay lines. On top of that you can utilize the powerful modulation matrix to modulate these effects for some really unique sounds. Arturia MatrixBrute Firmware Update 1.1

via Arturia

"We are proud to announce the first update to our flagship analog synthesizer. Based on early feedback from MatrixBrute owners, we have refined its firmware to give you the best possible creative experience. Matrix-arpeggiator, real-time recording, preset knob position indication, and more!

Firmware Update 1.1
The MatrixBrute is just at the very beginning of its story but it is already growing stronger and stronger. Discover the new features brought by the firmware update 1.1.

Real-Time Recording

What is the most natural way to record music?

If you instinctively thought “playing”, then no doubt that you will appreciate using the real-time recording mode. Especially as we made our best to make it extremely convenient and super effective.

Set the length of your sequence, press the Record and Play buttons in sequencer mode and let yourself freely ride on immediate inspiration.

Of course, the real-time mode records the notes you play but there is more. Holding a note during several steps automatically ties them while playing a note with a high velocity records an accent on this step. At last the real-time mode also allows you to record the modulation track live by using the Modulation Amount knob.

Matrix Arpeggiator

Transmuting two elements into a brand new one

Our engineer gave in to the practice of a forbidden alchemy that gave birth to the Matrix Arpeggiator, an exclusive creative tool that will stick you to your MatrixBrute for daylong sessions.

Simultaneously press the Arpeggiator and Sequencer buttons to discover this advanced benefit of the Matrix.

The Matrix Arpeggiator play ground is made of up to 16 steps, each represented by a column of the Matrix, and arpeggiated chords of up to 4 notes. The four top rows work just like in standard sequencer mode for these 16 steps. The lower part can be divided in three groups of 4 rows. Each group represents an octave from -1 to +1 and the 4 rows within each of them symbolize the 4 notes of the chord you play on the keyboard.

New KORG Minilogue Editor for Patch Base

via coffeeshopped

"Patch Base 2.5 is now available, and with it comes an editor for the Korg Minilogue. Now you can visualize any patch on your Minilogue, as well as edit all synth and sequencer parameters. Fetch patches from your synth, create new patches from an init patch, or create random patches to discover new sounds. And as always, you can store your entire patch library on your iPad, and organize it into folders. For the next several days, the In-App Purchase for the Minilogue editor is 50% off.

The top half of the editor shows all of the synth's voice parameters, while the bottom half gives controls for editing both notes and motion sequencing data, complete with copy, paste, randomization, and initialization functions. You can create your own sequences in the editor itself, or use it to perfect a sequence you recorded while playing the Minilogue itself."

"If you like my stuff, please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/

I really really really needed to make some more music... was in a very bad mood due to loads of day job work... so I could not get to a point where I was happy with this tune.. so it just kept on going and going and going... and in the end, why not just let it go ? and keep it the way it is.. and not explore more complexities, melodies and just keep it as is? Damn, that was a hard decision.. it might feel incomplete on a first listen, but really for me it's so loaded with feelings, to the brim.

Initially, this track started with a system-1 arpeggiator melody.. that just evolved over time into a layer of basslines and other arpeggios, with a really simple beat.. that never starts, it just stays on a level waiting for the drop that never comes.

I hope you can enjoy this, as this was a painful tune to make.. on many different levels.

VGM #101: Die Anywhere Else (Night in the Woods) Ft. Curious Quail

Published on Mar 29, 2017 Ace Waters

"I had to make a last minute cover this week because my bandmates ended up needing more time for the new IITT track. I reached out on twitter, and someone recommended that I tap into the 'Night in the Woods' OST. I immediately went to a video of Die Anywhere Else and came up with an idea for an arrangement. I went back on twitter and my buddy Mike (Curious Quail) had commented about wanting to do another collab with me on Die Anywhere Else. I told him the timeline, and he made it work, and I am so happy he did because man did those chiptunes really pull the song together. I also wanted some elements of the post-rock shimmer guitar in there, and while working on ideas on my electric, I thought...'Man, Kyle hasn't been on a track in a while, this would be perfect for him!' and he also made some time and put together a great last minute guitar track. Point being, everyone involved in this track is awesome, and I am really happy that we ended up needing to do this song, because it became one of my new favorite VGMs that I have done. Enjoy!"

Vintage Synth Lab VCF-74 Eurorack (Korg Minikorg 700s) Filter Demo

Published on Mar 29, 2017 mylarmelodies

"Being a demo of the very vintage VCF-74, inspired by the Korg Minikorg 700s 'Traveler' dual filter. A 6dB HP & 12dB LP in series, with wonderful natural compression, warm drive characteristics, and a ton of personality. More info & dealers here: http://www.vintagesynthlab.com/eurorack/vcf74
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Korg Traveler Filter pic thanks to Christian Hatvani of https://www.youtube.com/user/AnalogAudio1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More info from the folks at VSL:

"The VCF-74 is a 14HP voltage controlled filter in Eurorack format. VCF-74 features a dual analogue high-pass and low-pass filter, cascaded (series, from HP - LP). The discrete diode filter circuit is inspired by the 1970s Univox Mini-Korg synthesizer's "Traveler" filter section which provides warm, organic sound to your modular system. However, this design was not only adapted for Eurorack, but is feature enhanced for a wide array of possible filter characteristics.

A stage boost switch allows you to drive the 2nd filter section (Low-Pass) with a +5.3dB signal boost from the High-Pass output signal creating a warm saturation and varied resonance to signal ratio/dynamics. Independent manual resonance controls per filter section allows you to fine-tune a wide variety of focused sound. Input and Output level controls allow you to optimize dynamic range, including how hard you drive the filter--which drastically changes the dynamic interplay between signal and harmonic resonance. Both High-Pass and Low-Pass circuits have independent cutoff controls. Independent CV inputs for cutoff and resonance of each filter section, and attenuation/gain for CV to cutoff provide superior control over filter behavior. The VCF-74 can be set up as a Low-Pass, High-Pass, or Band-Pass filter. Width of the Band-Pass can be adjusted by simply dialing in the offset controls appropriately."

KORG Introduces the KRONOS LS

KRONOS LS - Strike the Perfect Balance

Published on Mar 28, 2017 Korg

"With a newly-designed light touch keyboard for effortless playability, KRONOS LS lets you take a full-sized keyboard - and the power of KRONOS - anywhere.

Packed with nine versatile sound engines, up to 16 simultaneous effects, 16-part Combinations and so much more, KRONOS is KORG’s most powerful synthesizer ever. To further unlock KRONOS’ potential, KORG introduces a new light-touch 88-key model for a new level of playability - and portability."

"New light-touch keyboard for effortless, nimble playing

KORG’s all-new light-touch keyboard makes it easy to play anything from rapid organ licks to synth phrases to glissandi. The mechanism of the keyboard itself has been redesigned so that the velocity is easier to control than on existing light-touch keyboards, even when playing complex chords or difficult phrases. The box-shaped keys share their look with KORG’s premium RH3 action, while providing the faster playing feel of a synth keyboard. Since the keyboard is semi-weighted, it’s also perfect for playing piano and electric piano in any style.

6.3 kg/14 lbs. lighter than KRONOS2-88 for increased portability

The new keyboard makes the instrument markedly lighter than KRONOS2-88 with KORG’s RH3 action, making transport and setup much simpler. At under 19 kg/40 lbs., bringing a full 88-note KRONOS to a show just became more convenient.

New OS v3.1 includes new Quick Layer/Split functions

Along with its dynamic new keyboard, KRONOS LS features the latest KRONOS OS - v3.1 - which puts Quick Layer and Quick Split functions right at users’ fingertips. Effortlessly create layers such as piano and strings, or splits such as electric piano and bass, effortlessly. Numerous additional OS refinements have also been made to further ensure stability and a stress-free performance environment.

A new look to complement its new feel

With its luxurious dark umber aluminum body and beautifully crafted sunburst wood side panels, KRONOS LS is designed to present as beautifully as it plays. KRONOS LS offers an elegant look that’s perfect for home, stage, and studio."

Cool two-tone wood side panels.
