Creating the lead sound from Talking Heads Burning Down The House on Prophet-5

video upload by Paul Schilling

"I only mention this at the end of the video, but the way I hear it in the original, the filter in this sound is wide open. The character comes mainly from the combination of pulse waves, detuned unison, and oscillator sync. I focus mainly on the oscillator, unison and glide settings but the envelope settings are also quite simple...fast attack and release, sustain all the way up.

Some tips on creating this on a Prophet-6:
- to get a fresh "init patch": While holding down the PRESET button, press the WRITE button
- to set the number of Unison voices: Hold down UNISON button, use the BANK/DECREMENT and TENS/INCREMENT buttons to set the number of voices
- to set Unison detune amount, use the SLOP knob
- to get Osc A to have both saw and square/pulse waves, set the SHAPE knob to 2 o'clock (halfway between saw and square shapes)"

Playing the Osmose! - Carlo Mezzanotte

video upload by carlomezz

"Developed by the French company Expressive E, this revolutionary instrument really expands the range of possibilities for real time control on a keyboard.Three different levels of polyphonic dynamics/aftertouch, polyphonic pitch control with lateral movement of the key, plus more traditional left-hand sliders... and a very poweful synth engine, the Egan Matrix, already in use on the Haken Continuum series of instruments.
On the unit I used, the sound programming was "locked", so I couldn't use the software editor, or store new sounds; I had to limit myself to tweaking some presets a little bit, and enjoying the wonderful performance capabilities."

"The Airlectron Sensor Recorder module is equipped with a sunlight independent distance sensor to generate CV output voltages. A distance sensor reacts to hand movements and varies the CV output voltages (bipolar/max +/- 5 V, unipolar/max 0-+10 V). The range control adjusts the detection distance (2-50 cm). The freeze function keeps the voltage when there is no continuous movement. The recorder/looper can be used to record motion sequences for up to two minutes. This recorded data can be played back in a loop or once and restarted at the START/RESET input. LEDs indicate the status of the gate inputs and outputs. rare birds: Echolette SE-251 tape echo unit

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"This is quite a rare tape echo manufactured by Dynacord. It seems to be one of the very last tape echo introduced by the brand (with the Echolette Echo 400).

It shares many parts with the Echocord line of delays like motor, pinch roller, heads, oscillator board etc But this one useS op amps instead of only transistors for amp stages (the Echocord Super 76 also already used one op amp for the output stage).

The unit has 2 heads which you can mix with the dedicated pot. Otherwise classic features like input volume, tone, echo send level, echo feedback and echo level.

In the back the original DIN socket enabled output and aux input. In this case you only get the wet signal out of the delay, which is nice in a studio environment.

Unit was fully serviced and modded. [mods below]

I demoed it with 3 different instruments so you get a good idea of how it sounds with different sources. First is a Roland MC-202, analog mono synth, then an analog drum machine (Roland CR-78) and last an electric guitar (Squier Jagmaster, not in frame). Please note the SE-251 has no hi input impedance so I run the guitar through a DI Box first.

- unit was meticulously cleaned

- heads were cleaned, demagnetized and aligned

Aureate 📀 (Sequential Take 5 // Elektron Digitone + Red Panda Particle + Strymon Deco 2) Chords Jam

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"No sequencers were harmed during this recording! 😄 Just wanted to roam with some chords played live on the Take 5 analog synth. Further on I introduced the Digitone FM synth where I used 3 tracks (with 3 different sounds), where 2 of the tracks have their integrated ARPEGGIO enabled, with different settings in order to add some rhythmic complexity to the jam 🥁

The Digitone is being fed into the Particle 2 granular delay then the Deco pedal, in order to add random variations to the FM sounds and some kind of LO-FI vibes!

The MIDI Out of the Take 5 synth is triggering the Digitone. Hence both synths are playing the same notes. However the 2 ARPs on the Digitone help bring the syncopated sounds.

I think that the blending of the analog and digital synths here, makes the global sound and texture of this jam sound quite interesting! Hope you liked it too? 😊

* Hardware used *

// PADS:
- Sequential Take 5 (5-voice analog synth)

// CHIMES:
- Elektron Digitone (8-voice FM groovebox) + Red Panda Particle 2 (granular delay and pitch shifter) + Strymon Deco 2 (tape saturation & doubletracker)"

Trigon 6 and Pro 3 - compared on low level

video upload by Infested Alien

"These types of comparison are super booring to watch. But what I've notice is that these two machines are more different at the lower basic blocks that I could imagen. This video do not compare out of reach functionality between machines. Else the pro 3 really pushes the limits way futher compared to a analog poly like Trigon 6 etc.

Conclusion: (subjective)
Pro 3 is more noticable at lower frequencies and also higher.
Pro 3 can be pusched really hard in signal path.

Trigon 6 is more smooth with completely different Saw + Tri sound.
Trigon 6 filter feels more like a hybrid between a moog and TB in some points. Very interesting.

A mono is intended to be way more "aggressive" than a poly for a simple reason. A poly would be rendered useless if the signal path would be to loud in terms of more voices at same time compared to mono."

AtoVProject - Dual Harmonic Oscillator (DHO) Sound demo

video upload by NOISEBUG

"We are pleased to present the Dual Harmonic Oscillator (DHO)!

Complex oscillators are renowned for their amazing sonic potential, yet they can be challenging to fully exploit due to the many modulators they require.

The DHO is a true analog sonic powerhouse. We used the power of digital controls to improve accessibility and inspiration. Each analog oscillator generates four octaves of triangle waves and modulates each other using through-zero FM. All of this is channeled through a scorching four-stage diode wavefolder.

But that's not the end! The DHO is under digital command, opening up a universe of possibilities. We've harnessed the power of simplex noise, an algorithm straight out of the video game industry. One twist of a knob allows you to dynamically modulate 10 parameters. You can explore infinite soundscapes and give life to the whole module with just one CV input. This fantastical noise source can also direct the frequencies of up to 10 internal LFOs, injecting motion and complexity into your sound without cluttering your rack with external modulation sources.

Did we mention that it has haptic feedback!? Yes, the DHO vibrates to talk to you and give you information about what’s going on!

We’ve spent the last two years refining our design language, and this is the first product emerging from this journey. Discover the AtoVproject ways and explore new sonic horizons with the DHO!"

Official Alesis Andromeda A6 Introduction Video (Synth Demo Promotional Reel) - VHS Source Copy

video upload by OldManZero

"I came across this old VHS that had an "introduction video" for the Alesis Andromeda synthesizer. The quality is OK, but there may be better sources out there as my copy was re-used. Under the labels for the promotional video, you can see that the tape was originally an Alesis Masterlink demo video. They just copied over it and added new labels.

The full video had this segment repeated over and over again for about an hour. I guess this was to play on screens at trade shows or music stores to drum up interest.

The demo sounds don't really hold up to today's standards or to what the A6 can actually do, but Alesis seemed to want to cater to the more upscale client that could actually afford the $3K price tag when it was released. (Think studio or session players.). So the sounds shown seem to cater to them. You do seem to hear a few snippets of actual crazy Andromeda sounds here and there though. What you see and hear here is peak late '90's/early 00's through and through."

“Myoglobin: A Protein Primer” with music created on a Moog modular by Gino Piserchio

video upload by Robotussin Vintage Synths

"Lovely wonky transfer of a 1971 science film called 'Myoglobin: A Protein Primer' with music created on a Moog modular by Gino Piserchio, who was a composer and actor who had featured in a few films by Andy Warhol. Piserchio died in 1989 aged just 44.

I find this film very soothing, mainly due to the soundtrack, the beautifully degraded quality of the film, and the blissed-out narration."

ULT-SOUND DS-4M : first jam

video upload by Freaky Tweaky

"The DS-4 drum synth, which was released by Toyo Gakki in the 1980s under the 'ULT--SOUND' brand and was used by the drummers of Japan's leading techno-pop group, has been revived in modern times.

While faithfully reproducing the circuit configuration of the original (early model), CV/GATE input terminals for each channel have been added to allow for cooperation with modular synths, etc., making it even more comfortable to use as a production tool."

70s Gen Dream - Novation Circuit Tracks Pack by Yves Big City

Demo TWO - 70s Gen Dream - Novation Circuit Tracks Pack by Yves Big City

AVAILABLE HERE: https://isotonikstudios.com/product/7..

"A Journey Back to the Dawn of Electronic Music with 70s Gen Dream

The year is 1978. Young Yves, captivated by the sounds of Kraftwerk's "We Are the Robots," is transported to a sonic frontier. The robotic vocals, the pulsating rhythms, the sheer audacity of it all – it's unlike anything he's ever heard, yet it somehow feels like a glimpse into the future.

But amidst the revolutionary sounds, there's also a touch of romanticism, a characteristic melody of the 70s era, where exploration was boundless and imagination fueled creation. As a Frenchman, he can't help but be drawn to the ethereal beauty of Jean-Michel Jarre's "Oxygène," a track that defies explanation, existing in a realm beyond the ordinary.

Inspired by these sonic pioneers, he embarks on a months-long odyssey. His mission: to capture the essence of these vintage sounds and translate them into the modern language of the Novation Circuit Tracks. His vision? To grant every music maker the opportunity to touch the spirit of the 70s, to channel the unbridled creativity of that golden age.

But "70s Gen Dream" goes beyond simply providing the sounds. To spark your creative flame, the pack also features Generative & Experimental Patches.

This innovative feature introduces a unique twist

Ever-evolving soundscapes:These special patches are designed to generate new melodies every time you play them, transforming a basic pattern into a fresh and dynamic soundscape each time it's triggered. It's like rolling the dice for sonic inspiration, keeping your music constantly evolving and surprising.

Imagine crafting a simple bassline that morphs and twists with each key press, adding a layer of organic unpredictability and delightful sonic surprises to your tracks. ✨

Don't just replicate the past. Reimagine it.

Ambient music using a Kawai K4r

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This synthesizer is still a lot of fun even after many years.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
Kawai K4r - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. On some tracks Compressor and EQ where added in Cubase. The final song was then mastered using iZotope Ozone.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)"

Tips & Tricks: Class Compliant USB Audio Interface with Elektron Drum Machines and Synths

video upload by Group Technologies Australasia

"Did you know that almost all Elektron devices* are USB class compliant? That means you can easily send audio out from your Elektron drum machine or synth directly to your Apple iOS or OS device and record proper line-level audio. This is great for quickly capturing that beat you've been working on and sharing it with friends or for posting on social media like a pro. In this video we look at how easy it is to plug and record audio to your Apple device with no additional drivers, app or software required! It's also possible to send any incoming audio from external sources routed through to your Elektron box, out to USB as well. In this video we jam the Elektron Syntakt together with a vintage Roland TR-606. The TR-606 audio is running into the external input of the Syntakt and all the sounds from both devices are being routed directly via USB audio into an iPhone.

Elektron firmware provides options for choosing what audio source output you want to route to your iOS device. The default setting will send the main stereo outs, whereby the mix of all your tracks inside your Elektron box is sent out via USB. Alternatively, there are options to choose a specific track out via USB; perhaps you just want to send your sick bass line without the kick drum — yes you can! The Analog Heat+FX also has the option to process incoming audio from USB, offering a two-way audio solution that has many creative applications. Your iPhone or iPad microphone might be good at recording your voice, but they're not great at capturing and representing your latest beat creation.

"In the words of Dr Strangelove "Why keep it a secret? Why didn't you tell the world?" Fortunately not jacketed in Cobalt-Thorium-G, yet still unannounced, the secondary config menu contains a few very useful options. One of my favorite tracks from the early 80s.
Fade To Grey by Visage (1981)
The composition is written by Billy Currie and Chris Payne during the sound checks for Gary Numan's Pleasure Principle Tour in 1979

featured: Moog Minimoog, the PPG wave 2.2 and the ARP Quadra

This cover song series contains my own recreations of my favourite songs from the last 50 years. The original music from which I take inspiration belong to their respective owners. I recreate tracks only for personal passion and to pay homage to these tracks.
My intention is not to create covers that sound exactly like the original (if you want to hear identical sounds, please listen the original). It's more of an inspiration with my sounds from the old synthesizers from the past and of course the great appreciation for the original performers and producers."

pikocore with midi out

video upload by infinitedigits

"there is a new version of the pikocore firmware available (v1.3.0) which automatically assigns each button a note. the note can be changed by holding the button and turning the leftmost knob.

anytime the pikocore is plugged into a midi receiving device it will send out midi notes for each step. you can quickly get sequence variations by turning up the 'jump randomness' which will randomize the sequence.

here I'm using an online tool called 'midi2midi' (google it, second result) which can automatically push midi from one device to another. here I'm sending midi out from the pikocore into the roland tb03."

Sinc Legio | by Noise Engineering

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"The Sinc Iter was a small 4 HP utility oscillator and the second VCO created by Noise Engineering. It's been discontinued for a while, but now it's back in glorious stereo. One would expect an 'Iter' to return on the Alia platform, but Alia is mono, and can't handle a stereo audiorate CV source.

The Sinc is a modest, civilized VCO in its core. You are supposed to use the Phase Modulation inputs, morphing basic waveforms, the wavefolder and chorus to sculpt our own sonic treasures. Sinc Legio is available as a free firmware for all Legio owners. Personally, I feel this is one of the most versatile and enjoyable firmwares in the NE VCO collection.

Happy flashing!"

Befaco - Octaves VCO

video upload by Befacosynth

"A harsh and funky take of an additive Oscillator.
Pile up multiplications of your frequency to get a lo-fi-retro wall of squared sound!
You get six doubled frequency pulses, or octaves, with common PWM and volume control for each of them.
The output of each is cascaded to the next one, so you can either have one output with all frequencies or break the chain and get several sums and modulate each independently!"

Update: and video from Divkid directly below. Also see mylarmelodies' Molten Music Technology video here.

A harsh & funky take on an additive oscillator // Octaves VCO from Befaco

video upload by DivKid

"Here we have what Befaco say is "a harsh and funky take on an additive oscillator" as it has individual harmonics or partials and VCAs to modulate them. However the idea of harmonics here is replaced with 6 octaves of square waves. It's an analog design with a triangle core oscillator that through frequency doublers give 6 octaves to work with, each turned into squares that respond to PWM. An onboard mixer allows for blending these squares, you can break out into new tones with self patching, or make multi-layered wide frequency spanning voices from the individual outs."

Dark Easel | Buchla LEM 218e, 0-Coast & Strega

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"This is a freeform improvisation with 0-Coast and Strega in three takes. The first take is 0-Coast doing plonks and textures, the second take is Strega doing a pad and the third take is a solo over the pad. Nothing fancy, and quite linear. More like parts - or movements - instead of overdubs. I am trying to show you that a DAW can turn a small set of modules into a huge wall of sound too. Doing everything in one go is really hard and only necessary if you need to perform live. I am happy I don't have to.

The Dark Easel is the nickname for the 0-Coast, Strega and 0-Ctrl trinity. As you may have seen in previous videos, I've been on a quest to recreate something close to the Buchla Easel in Eurorack. My quest came to an end when I took a leap of faith and got the Buchla 218e, which is the 'simple' 50% of the Easel case. However, I did not expect these capacitive touch keys to be such a big component of the authentic Buchla Easel sound.

It's a very big investment for a little keyboard, but I can't emphasize how happy I am with it. I am not a good keyboard player, but sliding over the surface finally allows my fingers to keep up with my brain. But it also feels like I am playing a bit of synth history. As I describe in the video, this combo is like a classic Corvette towing a skateboard. It's not intended as a disrespect to the 0-coast, but there are a lot of skateboards at the MN office in Ashville. Besides, 0-coast definitely qualifies as a great entrypoint into modular westcoast synthesis and honestly, I learned a LOT from this little machine. Like 'everything is voltage'. This time it's not racked and used as intended. With keys.
I am sure you'll get similar results with your Keystep or a more fancy controller.

I know there are a few Spartans out there who want it raw, with nothing but the bare machine. But it has a contour and sustain tightly related with holding down a key. And then, ofcourse, there's midi. In this video, I completely overlooked using the 0-coast with the midi output from the 218, but I don't feel like going through those PGM A | B pages. I will check it out later, because I wonder what would happen if I enable the Coast's internal sequencer AND an external one (e.g. BeatStep Pro). If it's any good, I'll post it. For today, I just wanted to cruise the Ease Coast."

BugBrand Introduces FilterQAmp - Filter, Amp and Decay Envelope Module in Frac Format

"

via BugBrand

"The FilterQAmp (FQA) combines a 2-pole State Variable VC Filter with a Linear VC Amplifier and an inbuilt variable-decay Envelope Generator. It is capable both of processing and, when the filter is self-oscillating, generation of synthesised sounds such as drums.

The VCF section contains a State Variable Filter (similar to my other designs) – this offers switchable Low or High Pass responses and covers the full audio range. It is temperature compensated & tracks 1V/Oct accurately. The Resonance/Q is voltage controlled with a linear response up to self-oscillation – this creates a pure sinewave, useful for synthesis.

The VCA is linear in response and takes the Low/Hi-pass output from the VCF section. It can either be set, via rear jumper, to a clean response (gain from 0 to +1) or saturation (gain from 0 to +1 then +/-5V zener clipping beyond – unity at approx 10 o’clock rotation).

The Filter, Q and Amp sections each have a CV Modulation depth control with switchable polarity (centre off) – the Filter has an additional 1V/Oct control input. In addition there is a simple variable-decay Envelope Generator which can be fired either with the manual Trig button or via the Trig input – this has a comparator so triggers on any signal over c.+1V. Decay time is variable between approx 15mS and 3Secs with an amplitude of 0 to +10V. The envelope is internally routed to modulate the Filter and Amp sections via individual depth controls – it could be manually patched to QCV with a 0.75″ shorting bar or cable.

When Q is set to full, the self-oscillating filter makes good sound generator – it can also ring when set below self-oscillation & fed with sharp edges such as gate signals. A basic drum synth can be achieved with self-oscillation and the decay envelope opening the VCA – try varying how much the envelope modulates the filter cutoff too. You can feed the main output back to the FCV input to self-modulate, resulting in an interesting peaky waveform."
