Brainwave Music with Buchla 200 at Western Front

The following was sent in by Anastasia Chernysheva, a Ph.D. student at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

"On February 28, 1977, On Being Invisible (OBI) premiered in Vancouver, at the Western Front. Stills from the black and white video capture David Rosenboom playing a touch-sensitive keyboard of Buchla 200 “Electric Music Box” and improvising in real-time with his brainwaves. The EEG output (electrical activity in the brain) was sonified by a hybrid computer sound synthesis system. Having years of biofeedback practice behind him, in this piece the pioneer of brainwave music continued exploring ways to relate information processing in the human nervous system to aesthetic experience – thus, stretching the definition of music musical performance.

Invited by the Canadian electronic music pioneer Martin Bartlett, Rosenboom gave a concert in two parts. The part presented the live performance application of the EEG system described above. In the second part of the performance, the composer used his voice, finger cymbals, a monkey drum, and a reed instrument to activate the software. A recording of the concert has been released for the first time by Black Truffle Records on the double-vinyl called “Brainwave Music” (1975/2019).
Videos from the concert can be watched on Rosenboom’s YouTube channel (see Part 1 and Part 2). Courtesy of the Western Front.

On Being Invisible was originally planned to premier at the Music Gallery in Toronto in 1976. However, due to an electricity outage that led to computer failure, the concert had to be canceled, while the audience was already gathered at the front door. Since the organizers had prepared beer for attendees, those waiting were invited inside. Once in, people gathered around the nonfunctioning set of equipment, looking at it with sad faces, as if they had come for a funeral. (see the photo below)

After rebuilding the equipment, Rosenboom performed the piece at the Music Gallery in 1977. This performance was published as vinyl by Music Gallery Editions and later re-released on CD by Pogus Productions.

Sequential Drumtraks Drum Machine Repair

video upload by gstormelectro

"Audio + Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2023

Today I'm investigating issues with a Sequential Drumtraks. While it is making sounds, the display is glitching out and the control functions are not working. In the end it was only incidental I was able to get it working again, for reasons I don't fully understand. The same phenomenon happens with my Drumulator, that's how I knew what to check for. It's my hope posting this video, that someone more knowledgable will be able to comment about this phenomenon.

This video is posted for general information about my experiences. Always observe safety working on electronics, and never tinker around inside power supplies without first unplugging the power cord. If you're not sure about anything, there's no shame in taking your instrument to a qualified service technician.

Since filming the video, I've discovered the batteries are still made in Japan. Also, the numbers on the battery may or may not necessarily be a date code. My new battery says 2132, so maybe it was made in 2021? Since the manufacture date and date installed may differ by a couple of years, I now write a date on the battery with a sharpie when I install it."

FIVE MINUTES WITH The Tiny 1010music Tangerine Sampler

video upload by sonicstate

"The newest in the 1010music nano-box range, the Tangerine packs a lot of power into a tiny box, perhaps moreso than previous models. With 24 voices of stereo sample playback, and 8 channels of stereo disc streaming its a clip launcher, one-shot sample, multi-sample instrument solution.

Chris B from @BOOelectric takes a break from their album launch (check it out, its a goodie) to take a look.

The only downsides we can see is the limited single stereo output (two would have been fab!), and the cost - as you might want more than one of these to handle live duties if discrete outputs are required.

Tangerine is shipping November 2023, priced at $399

Elektron Octatrack, Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field, Chase Bliss Reverse Mode C

video upload by Luca Longobardi

"Lay down your mind and peace will come. A peace deeper than anything you have known.
(Haruki Murakami, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World)

About Octatrack setting:

Track 3: Piano sample recorded on the Octatrack
Track 2: glitch drums
Track 6: OP-1 tape live through a THRU machine
Track 1: Same piano sample distributed on a slicing grid to be used as a melody through manual use of the fader (scene change).
Fast movements of the fader create further glitches in the feedback of the Reverse Mode C which reacts like a sort of arpeggiator."

FIGHT & FLIGHT / full system generative 'horror' patch / singing bowl research / farewell Steven

video upload by BRiES

"I started this patch by trying to mimic the tone and frequency beating of a Tibetan singing bowl. Triangle waves seem to be the best match for generating the 'odd' overtones. I used two of them tuned almost to the same frequency to produce a slow beating. One is panned left and one is panned right. I had to run this pair through a LPF to get rid of a lot of the top end fizz.

The other sounds are a bunch of resonating filters and VCOs through Beads tuned up a major 7th with a lot of wet grains fed back to the input. There's some automation going on in terms of gating these, controlled by an output of COMPARE 2 (analyzing ORBIT 3) through a counter (ERFURT).

This week (29th of october) Steven (one of the residents of a farm sanctuary) passed away after a long and hard fight. It's weird and confusing how these events thousands of miles away can still hit you. RIP Steven."

Track: '91 (Everlasting Summer) - MPC One, Zoom R20, Novation PEAK, Yamaha EX5, Reface DX, Guitar

video upload by Floyd Steinberg

"Here's a song about that vague feeling you've overstayed your welcome, by years propably. Made on #mpcone mainly, with my #ZOOMR20 acting as an audio interface and MIDI controller. Novation PEAK is used for that distorted piano sound that augments the singer's voice whenever a line ends. Yamaha #ex5 plays that slow brass stab, and #refacedx is used for that short 'fuzzy EP' solo in the middle. #guitar was recorded to MPC as well, then filtered and EQ'd a bit.

Ambient EP backing track provided by @LanthanOIde - thanks again and I'm sorry for giving this a low profile in the mix _once again_ - perhaps it's time for another ambient remix? ;-)

7/9/23 ElectroComp EML 200 (x2) + STG MooSonics + Synthesizers.com + Synthetic Sound Labs + LWSS CGS

video upload by Cfpp0

"Not sure why this video is framed like this. Most of what I am doing is happening out of frame, up at the top left, on the STG MooSonics Vanilla filter, mixer, and vca envelope modules. And probably quite a few clues to remembering this patch lie out of frame to the right of the EML 200s. This was shot before the SSL 1660, so my guess is that the LWSS CGS01 sub oscillator module is producing the little sequence—fed envelopes from the EML or LFO from Synthesizers.com."

video upload by DecadeBridge

"The pitch of Albers' 4 oscillators are being modulated with different rate sine waves from Pamela's Pro Workout. Albers' onboard pitch LFOs then create a stepped tone. The VCAs of the four oscillators are being controlled using two envelope generators and an envelope from Pam's Pro Workout. A fast decaying envelope is the sent to Albers' filter cutoff CV in.
Output to the microcosm set to one of the warp algorithms."

FIVE SONGS ON THE SOLTON PROGRAMMER 24

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"We compiled all our Solton Programmer 24 and Solton Project 100 songs in one convenient video. Italo Disco Machines?
Not false - but these two hotties offer a bit more than that.
Launched around the same time in the mid-80s, none of them caused much stir but at least the Programmer 24 was exported widely and they pop up on the market even in the US.
Overrun by sleeker Japanese machines, most Solton units probably seemed a bit dated at the moment of their release but re-adjusting the rearview mirror a bit we think they sound pretty great.
The Solton Programmer 24 is the obvious song writing tool:
It's a drum machine, bass line generator, chord generator and arpeggiator with an added string and organ section and a filter for the arpeggiator.
A very simple thing, almost a toy, but it's fun as hell and adding some effects to the sounds it gets interesting. For effects we're using the Schulte Compact Phasing, the low-budget, digital delay unit Vermona DEG-50 and the oddball, even lower-budget, mini-rack, multi-effect LEM FX22.

Synth Stuff Ep. 84 - Korg DW-8000

video upload by tritonrecordings

"Before hitting a home run with the M1, Korg had the DW series which combined digital oscillators with analog filters. Much like the Ensoniq ESQ-1 or Kawai K3, it resulted in a sound that was digital, yet warm while companies like Roland and Oberheim were still making analog stuff. Eventually the D-50 and M1 would take the spotlight, but the DW-8000 is an underrated little gem. The built-in delay section is really good at thickening the sound. Here, I go through a handful of presets, some of them slightly modified, and a bit of reverb to liven things up a bit. Definitely a synth worth investigating if you come across a good deal on one. It's also worth mentioning that the MS2000/Microkorg feature the DW waveforms in them."

The Tappan Zee (Gov. Mario M. Cuomo) Bridge - I-87, I-287, and NYS Thruway

video upload by CatSynth TV

"A ride along I-287, I-87 and the New York State Thruway westbound in Westchester and Rockland Counties, just north of New York City. Along the way we cross over the Hudson River on the Tappan Zee Bridge, also known as the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. The original Tappan Zee Bridge open in 1955 - it was only designed for a life span of 50 years, and was showing signs of decay by the 2000s. It was replaced in 2017 by the new twin cable-stayed span that we see in this video.

Mapper: map01/12/21 Chaotic Synthesizer Prototype Demonstration

video upload by Ryan Gaston

"A demonstration of map01/12/21, an electronic musical instrument that focuses on random, chaotic, and gestural interconnections between its constituent structures. map01/12/21 has been succeeded by map02/21, which offers nearly identical functionality; this video serves as an archival demonstration of the older prototype.

map01/12/21 combines three modules: the map01 Delta Scan Mapping Interface (a chaotic audio generator), the map12 Windowed Temporal Drag Processor (a dynamically re-writable audio buffer), and map21 Multiple Vector Source + Translation Matrix (a MIDI controller that combines two joysticks, sixteen random number generators, a timing generator, and a data routing matrix). map01 and map12 have been abandoned in favor of the newer map02 Delta Scan Mapping Interface + Windowed Temporal Drag Processor, which combines their functionality into a single device.

This improvisational demonstration highlights many of the unique possibilities of each of its constituent parts; ranging from blasts of noise to whistling tones, stuttered repeats, aliasing, goofy computer-generated bleeps, and gesturally-controlled chaos."

Continual Transition - a Memory Machine [Sound/Noise Demonstration]

video upload by Ryan Gaston

"Continual Transition is an electronic sound-making device designed to engage memory, inspired by the unique otherworldly dread of isolation in the Ozarks.

Continual Transition uses a simple synthesis structure, modulated delay lines, sampling, and multiple internal feedback/feedforward nodes to create a chaotic, constantly evolving musical structure. Despite its use of relatively simple synthesis "building blocks," its embrace of chaos and its perhaps-peculiar parameterization makes it such that individual controls often results in individual knobs affecting many aspects of a sound's character, usually in nonlinear or unpredictable ways.

Continual Transition is comprised of two primary sections: on the left, a Temporal Reflection Interval Processor (TRIP), and on the right, an Arbitrarily Traversal Memory Register (ATMR). The TRIP and ATMR are intertwined via multiple intermodulation nodes, allowing them to influence one another's behavior in a number of ways. The TRIP is a continually-degrading memory process, in which user actions are echoed, multiplied, and obfuscated continually as time progresses. The ATMR is a sampling device, which assesses the device's total state for concentrated periods of time, locking small windows of "memory" into a buffer which can be bent, twisted, folded, and traversed linearly or chaotically.

By allowing these two forms of memory to commingle—and by gradually learning the relationship between individual controls, the immediate sound, and the way that sounds progress into the future—the user may develop a peculiar sense of "presentness," in which the events of the past and immediate future gain greater clarity and present actions take on greater-than-typical weight.

Continual Transition was created with a Bela Mini, Pure Data, simple custom circuitry, and Arkansan cedar sourced directly from the forests of the Ozarks. A limited number of Continual Transition devices were created in 2020. Despite initial goals to the contrary, there is no current plan to develop it into a commercial product.

If you want to learn more about Continual Transition (and to hear more examples of how it can sound), see the Summer 2019 edition of SciARC's Offramp online magazine here: https://offramp.sciarc.edu/articles/c..."

Stereo Transfer Function Synthesizer - Proof of Concept (Teensy)

video upload by Ryan Gaston

"A simple demonstration of some of the sounds yielded from a simple Teensy-based synthesizer. This is a proof of concept more than anything else; ultimately, this will be integrated into a more complete instrument.

The internal signal path is based on a combination of phase modulation, frequency modulation, and digital waveshaping via arbitrarily constructed transfer functions. Three oscillators intertwine in various ways, each contributing to the sound's instantaneous timbre, pitch, loudness, and sense of spatial location. The use of many internal feedback/feedforward nodes enhances the potential for chaotic, unpredictable sonic structures.

Originally, the idea was to create a stereo oscillator with transfer function-based waveshaping; however, I found that with a sufficiently knotted internal signal flow, it was possible to achieve a pretty astonishing range of animated sounds using relatively limited means. Though very much inspired by the Hordijk Blippoo Box, Hordijk Benjolin, Serge Wave Multipliers, Buchla Touché, Buchla 400, Buchla 700, and Buchla 259e, and some experimental works by Larry Polansky, I'm finding that there's much more sonic territory to be explored utilizing the bizarre combination of feedback and waveshaping via arbitrary transfer functions.

Again, I hope to continue to expand this into a more complete, performable instrument. But for now, enjoy some noise."

Buchla Thunder + ASM Hydrasynth | Noise Improvisation

video upload by Ryan Gaston

"I recently took delivery of a vintage Buchla Thunder—a MIDI controller I've been dorking out over for years. In this video, I'm exploring a tiny bit of what it can do when combined with an ASM Hydrasynth desktop module...in the form of a mostly noisy/textural improvisation. (Note—the laptop is there purely for the sake of recording. All sounds and effects are coming from the Hydrasynth.)

Released in ~1990, Thunder is bonkers. Like many of Buchla's prior instruments, it uses touch-sensitive plates as a way of interacting with electronic sound engines. There's no "default" setup...you have to program everything that it does from scratch. It can translate touch directly into MIDI notes, or your touches can be used to initiate/conditionally influence programmed strings of events. Keys can even be used to conditionally modify one another's behavior—it's very deep, and things can become complex quite quickly. That's much of its charm: it's very easy for simple interactions to unwind into complex, unexpected flurries of sound.

So it's quite powerful...but given that I've had it for only a short time, I'm still barely scratching the surface. That said, it's already proving to be super inspiring to play, and I'm excited to keep digging in from here."

via this auction

"This vintage ARP Odyssey has just been fully serviced in October 2023 by Synthchaser, the top ARP specialist - recapped, new key bushings, all new LED sliders, fully functional, tuned and calibrated, and sounding awesome! The Odyssey was ARP's answer to the Minimoog, a feature packed scaled down version of the legendary ARP 2600.

A video functional demonstration of this synth that is for sale is at the end of the pictures list.

The synth is in great condition. This synth comes with illuminated LED sliders that correspond to the colors of the original slider caps. I can disable the illumination for the buyer before shipping, upon request at the time of purchase.

Work just completed on the synth included:

Synthchaser Precision LED slider upgrade - All 34 of the old original sliders have been replaced with new, smooth, high precision LED illuminated sliders. The difference in the way these sliders feel and perform compared to the originals is a huge improvement. LEDs run off their own power supply mounted inside the synth.
Illuminated slider caps - Slider caps with a translucent plastic stripe that allows the LED illumination to shine through, while giving you something substantial to grip onto. They look and feel awesome!
Power supply rebuilt - All tantalum and electrolytic capacitors in the power supply have been replaced, and high quality, high temperature 105 deg C capacitors have been used for the power supply filter capacitors.
All tantalum capacitors replaced - The tantalum capacitors in ARP synths are ticking time bombs. All tantalum capacitors in this synth have been replaced with electrolytics to help provide stable operation for years to come.
Synthchaser 4023 Voltage Controlled Filter Submodule - This is a very fat 2 pole dual OTA filter. Synthchaser modules are true to the original designs and professionally built using premium components with superior performance and reliability to those found in the original modules.
Keyboard rebuild - New key bushings installed, keys removed and ultrasonically cleaned, bus bars removed and polished, bellcrank caps cleaned and lubricated.
Oscilloscope calibration - Calibrated & tuned using oscilloscope and frequency counter.
1/4" output made High - ARPs of this era had an RCA jack as the high output and the 1/4" jack as the low output. As today RCA jacks are an inconvenience for most, the 1/4" jack has been made to a second high output.

[demo] Old-School Poly Sounds (Quantum/Iridium)

video upload by Synthesizer Video Service

"These are all 100 patches from my new Waldorf Quantum and Iridium sound bank in one go. This package is called 'Classic Poly Layers' and it contains pure VA sounds ('Waveform' oscillator model) for these awesome machines. Of course, all patches use mod-wheel and aftertouch.

The best: these patches are perfect for layering. Just put two of these sounds on both layers of the Quantum or Iridium to create a fat and complex sound. This way, you can create 10,000 (100 x 100) new and exciting combinations!

I modeled these sounds after a well-known synth from around 1980, but I won't say which one to dodge criticism. But maybe you can guess which one it is. It would make me happy in any case. Feel free to post your guess in the comments!

Here you get a continuous mix of all patches, recorded directly onto three DAW tracks, without additional hardware or software effect processing - just pure Quantum MK1 (only internal effects)!

Get these sounds in the shop (EU only): https://www.frequture.net/shop/"

Destiny+ 16 Psyche feedback demo

video upload by Petajaja

"this was a fairly simple patch on that I could've gone much further with it in terms of complexity but I guess it shows how you can already start getting quite complex results without using it all.

it's a patch exploring feedback utilizing two sine oscillators both clone sections, both mixers, both function generators, the twisted division ring, sq root and phase modulation on one of the oscillators and 3 of the groupoids, two LFO's are also being used in the division ring section to help generate patterns.

such an incredibly deep instrument for anyone who it's interface appeals to."
